MRS. ELIZABETH CATANZARO
In 1979, the Winners Hotel/Casino was fortunate to have Elizabeth Catanzaro find a home here with us. Liz began her career as a Cage Cashier but was quickly transferred to the Pit, where she “found her calling.”
Liz, for the better part of the next three decades, became more then just an employee at Winners. She was just as much a part of Winners as were the games and machines we offered. Players would take special trips, from all over, just to come down and visit her. Her combination of a feisty attitude, sense of humor and that New York accent that slipped out every once in a while, made her stand out above the rest.
For so many years Liz went out of her way to make our guests, as well as employees, feel welcome and at home. Not many people have the ability to make such a lasting impression on so many people and, as with Liz, not realize they’re doing it. For those of us here at Winners, it has been a rare privilege to have had Liz with us for so long.
On Friday July 8, 2007, Elizabeth Catanzaro passed away. On that day Winners Hotel/Casino lost so much more that an valuable employee, we lost a friend. So, from your family here at Winners, we wish to say thank you Lizzy, you’ve meant more to us than you know, we love you, and, you will be missed. Elizabeth Catanzaro, 1934-2007.

MRS. JODY CHRISTISON
Jody Christison passed away quietly Dec. 6, 2008, at 80 years old at Humboldt County General Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born and raised on the historic Pinson ranch, founded by her pioneer ancestors, north of Golconda. Her parents were Camille and Glen Hibbs.
She began riding horses and working cattle at an early age, and loved helping her Uncle Vic on the ranch.
She attended high school in Winnemucca and went on to college, studying accounting at the University of Nevada. The Southern Pacific rail line had been laid very close to the homestead and the train would make a special whistle-stop there to pick Jody up and drop her off in Reno and then bring her home from school.
She met, fell in love with and married Gene Christison, from Bruneau, Idaho, in 1950. They made a home on the Pinson Ranch and eventually bought the nearby Pettit Ranch, where they raised their three children.
Jody and Gene worked as a team all their life on the ranch, roping and branding calves, sorting cattle and feeding them in the winter with hay they put up in the summer.
Jody dealt with many obstacles over the next 58 years in keeping the ranch intact and prospering in the face of numerous challenges brought about by modern progress and multiple use of the rangeland to successfully pass it along to the following generation. When expecting her first born in 1952, the Humboldt River flooded and washed away the highway bridge to home after she made it across to deliver her son at the hospital.
Jody was an accomplished horsewoman and worked outside with her family and hired men. Her love of horses and horsemanship was a key interest in her life, and she was a fixture at every event, pad and pencil in hand, recording scores, that she and her husband could attend.
She was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Agricultural District No. 3 (Rodeo Board) for over 20 years, managing the Nevada Open Horse Show and Futurity and was Nevada State Horsemen's Inductee in the Hall of Fame in 1998. Both Jody and Gene were inducted into the Nevada Cattlemens 100,000 Miles (on Horseback) Club in 2004.
She possessed an astounding memory, and a conversation with her embellished with vivid characterizations and first hand experience developed into an engrossing submersion into living history that will be long remembered.
Known for her sharp wit, keen intellect and good sense of humor, Jody was loved by her family, friends and neighbors and will be missed.
She is survived by her immediate family; husband Gene, son Victor and daughter in law Doris, daughter Sue, and Jim and daughter in law Tara and two grandchildren Camille and J.D. Christison.
Private internment will be at the Winnemucca Cemetery with a memorial celebration of her life to be held at a later date. Donations in her memory can be directed to the North Central Nevada Historical Society at P.O. Box 819 Winnemucca, Nevada 89446.

MR. ROGER J. COLBY
Roger Joe Colby passed away at home with his wife by his side, Jan. 1, 2009, from a sudden heart attack and complications from his diabetes, which he struggled with for many years.
Roger was born on Oct. 18, 1940, to Joseph James Colby and Wilma (Marks) Colby in La Junta, Colo. Being raised on cattle ranches he learned responsibility at an early age, graduating from Mosca Consolidation High School, Mosca, Colo., working on ranches and then enlisting in the United States Navy.
He proudly served his country as a Naval Hospital Corpsman, Radiology Technologist and a medical tech. at various stations, including three tours in Vietnam. After returning from his third tour in Vietnam and stationed at Great Lakes Naval Hospital, Great Lakes, Ill., as a radiology technologist/instructor he met his future wife, Marsha, who was also a Naval Hospital Corpsman and completing her career in radiology as well. Roger waited to wed his future bride until she completed her naval tour of duty before uniting in marriage on July 22, 1968, in Waukegan, Ill., near the Great Lakes Naval Hospital.
He worked as a registered radiology technologist for a few years after being honorably discharged from the service in 1969, but his plans were to return to the rancher's way of life in the western states and raise a family.
The light of his life was his son John, who was raised on ranches knowing the importance of working together and being a part of a close loving family. It wasn't surprising to see Roger going across the pasture checking cattle horseback with John sitting in front of him in the saddle having a bottle in one chap pocket and diapers in the other pocket. It didn't matter how long the workday was, John was always by his dad's side at a very early age in his western shirt, jeans and cowboy boots. Roger and John not only had a father/son relationship, but were truly the best of friends.
John and Paula blessed him with three wonderful grandchildren, Talon, Tom and Tanner, who made him so proud. He treasured every moment spent with them and looked forward to the many phone conversations. The children knew they could ask grandpa anything and receive a straight answer always. He loved them like his own and felt like he had four children, not one son and three lovely grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his family, but left us with many heartfelt memories.
Roger felt with his medical knowledge and experience he could contribute ideas about improving the medical care availability in this community he called home, by serving on the hospital board. He was known to be quite outspoken and straight to the point even in the board meetings; you never had to wonder what was on his mind.
Friends will remember him for the many telephone conversations with Country/Western music playing in the background, his jokes and the joking around, plus his mouthwatering campfire style potato/bacon meal simmering in a cast iron skillet. Most of all, Roger will be remembered as a kind, thoughtful and generous man who would give his shirt off his back if you needed it, with no hesitation.
Survivors include his wife, Marsha, son and daughter-in-law John and Paula Colby, grandchildren, Talon, Torri and Tanner from Eureka, two daughters Lori and Geri Ann and their children from a previous marriage, brother, James (Jim) W. Colby of Fruitvale, Idaho, sister Delia from Arizona and many aunts, uncles, cousins; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harmon Edward Colby and Chester Lee Colby.
Roger was a good loving husband for over 40 years, a wonderful caring dad and grandpa who we will never forget. He will truly be missed by family and friends who loved him.
In memory of Roger Colby's life and military service to our country his name will be remembered at the Veteran's Administration Cemetery in Fernley.
Roger's family would like to thank the many friends, who sent cards, gifts, flowers, plants and gave us the needed support to help us through these difficult times.

MRS. FLORENCE COUCH
Florence passed away peacefully with family holding her hands on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, in Eureka, Calif. She was 88 years old.
Born Aug. 18, 1921, in Kent, Wash., she was the oldest of three children to(Jules) Joseph and Erna (Beyer) Martial. Florence spent her early childhood in Kent and later moved to Seattle where her father, an immigrant from Pas-de-Calais, France, was a master gardener and the head groundskeeper for the Seattle Pilots Sick's Seattle Stadium. She was exceptionally proud of his involvement in the design and planting of the Peace Arch Garden in Blaine, Wash., and equally proud of her mother's 50+ years of volunteer work and service to the Seattle Children's Hospital. Florence's love of lighthouses was nurtured by her grandfather and uncle both of whom were lighthouse keepers at several locations along the Washington and Oregon coast. Her home was adorned with pictures, artwork, books, and knickknacks all featuring past and present American lighthouses. Her favorites were the Astoria and Heceta Head lighthouses in Oregon. She always had a story to tell of her childhood memories of these great American icons.
Florence moved to Winnemucca in 1951 where she met and married the love of her life, Glenn P. Couch, Jr. Flossie, as he called her; worked as a book-keeper for several local businesses including the Humboldt Star newspaper, the Sonoma Inn, Sewells-Mayfair Market, as well as Glenn's own business ventures, It was here that she raised her and Glenn's children from previous marriages as well as the "brood" they created among them. Theirs was a home filled with life laughter and love.
After 24 years away from the ocean she was happy to move to Westhaven, Calif., in 1975 when Glenn decided it was time to retire and go fishing full time. She soon joined the Westhaven Ladies Club and for the next 30 years could be found year-round at the fire hall baking pies and making jams and jellies for the annual Westhaven Blackberry Festival held in July. Here she made many lasting friendships within the community and became acquainted with many people who knew her only as the "pie lady" during Festival time. Her involvement was featured in numerous publications several times over the years.
Not to be outdone by her children and grandchildren, she decided to go back to school. Having graduated from Seattle's Franklin High School in 1939, she didn't see the more-than-45 year time span as being an obstacle to achieving her goal. In 1988 she received her Associate of Arts Degree from the College of the Redwoods where she stood proud to be among the much younger graduating crowd. Her motto was, "Today is the first day of the rest of my life." And she meant it. Not one to slow down or ease up, she and her dear friend Dorothy Ericson devoted their time by delivering meals to the elderly for the Food for People Brown Bag program, the Trinidad Lions Club Food Pantry, and the Home Delivered Meals program for the Humboldt Senior Resource Center. Their route became a 15-year expedition into the area surrounding Trinidad and Westhaven until neither she nor Dorothy, both in their 80s, could drive anymore (legally anyway). Their volunteer work was recognized by the Area 1 Agency on Aging in 2007.
Florence will be remembered by many as having a great smile and a spirited sense of humor as well as being fiercely independent. Often asked how she was doing, she would always give the feisty answer, "I'm fat, sassy, and getting better at it every day!"
She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn, her brother Albert (Bud) Martial, daughter Janet Williams (Couch),, grandson Jeffrey Wade, and great grandson Blake Couch.
Florence is survived by and was a loving mother to Rodger Wade and his wife Suzanne of Winnemucca, Tommy Couch and his wife Vicky of Areata, Calif, Glennda Couch-Carlberg and her husband Carl of Areata, Calif., and Stevan Couch of Samoa, Calif. She also leaves behind her beloved sister, Shirley Baskin, of Bellevue, Wash., and nephew Bruce Baskin and his wife Linda of Chehalis, Wash. Always one to love Glenn's children as her own, she was the loving step-mother to Andrea Schatz and her husband Ken of Elk Grove, Calif., Toni Ryan and her husband Jimj of Bradbury, Calif., Glenn Couch III, and her former daughter-in-law whom she said became her daughter, Adrienne Couch of Winnemucca.
Known affectionately as Nana to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she leaves behind Joseph (Joey) Couch, Tim Couch, Stephanie Wade, Billie Jo Cross, Jeremiah Couch, Melissa Alcorn, Ginger Kuhs, Lance King, Glenn Couch, Darren Couch, Shannon Keller, Kimberlee Baker, and many great grandchildren.
The family would like to acknowledge her dear friends who meant so much to her: Patsy Fransway, Mark Eldredge, Evelin Santillan, James and Betty Fleshman, and Marco and Debbie Ibarra. There are so many more. To the medical staff at St. Joseph Hospital (especially doctors Matthew Miller and Jennifer Heidmann), Hospice of Humboldt, and the staff at Timber Ridge/Renaissance, we are deeply grateful to you all for making her last days comfortable and dignified.
Memorial contributions can be made to Humboldt Senior Resource Center, Food for People, the Trinidad Lions Club, the Westhaven Ladies Club/Fire Department or a non-profit program of your choice. Florence would be especially honored if you give the gift of your time and volunteer in service to your com-munity.
Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life in honor of Florence on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Westhaven Fire Hall, 446 Sixth Ave., Trinidad, Calif. Please bring your stories, pictures and memories. As she said many times before her death, "I don't want any services; have,a party instead. I'm just sorry I won't be there to enjoy it.

MR. MARK D. COWLEY
Mark D. Cowley passed away at his home in Mountain Grove, Mo., Aug. 16,2008. Mark was born in Layton, Utah, Jan. 19, 1929, to Stanford Adams and Laree Tucker Cowiey. He married Mary Drakos Feb. 16, 1945, in Salt Lake City.
Mark worked on ranches in Big Piney and Boulder, Wyo., and in Utah before becoming manager of the Ellison Ranching Company's Squaw Valley Ranch in Elko County. In 1971 Mark and Mary purchased Mark's Water-hole #1 in Golconda. While at the Waterhoie Mark was president of the Waterhoie Ike syndicate. News agencies worldwide interviewed Mark about Ike the Pig with a social security number.
Riding horseback and working cows was Mark's life long love, but his story telling, quick wit and ability to make a "good trade" made Waterhoie #1 a success. While Waterhole Ike was the most famous of Mark's adventures in Goiconda, the frog jumping contests and baseball team brought many together to enjoy the fun in the community. From the time of his days playing football in high schoo!, Mark enjoyed watching any football game. And a wager on that game (or anything else) always made the game more exciting.
In 1979 Mark and Mary sold the Waterhoie. They moved to Missouri and returned to the cattle business.
Mark is survived by his wife Mary of Mountain Grove, Mo.; daughter Louise and husband Terry Rackley, Cabool, Mo.; son Stan and wife Jeannie Cowley, Winnemucca; sister and brother-in-law Stana and Don Wood.
