MRS. VERNA ANDERSON
Verna Anderson, age 91, of Reno, passed away Jan. 27, 2008. Verna was born in Winnemucca on May 23, 1916, to parents Carrie Choate Bullis and Cameron Angus Bullis.
She grew up in Paradise Valley and Winnemucca. Verna graduated from Humboldt County High School in 1934. She attended the University of Nevada, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, graduating in 1940. Verna taught school at Getchell Mine and later at Sun Valley Elementary School in Reno.
On June 21, 1940, Verna married Victor O. Anderson in Winnemucca. They relocated to Reno in 1944. In 1950, Vic and Vema moved to Alturas, Calif., where they published The Alturas Plaindealer until 1952. After returning to Reno, Verna was a homemaker, enjoying sewing, furniture refmishing, antiquing, art-related hobbies and her children's sports and 4-H activities.
In 1965, Vic and Verna purchased Vic's family ranch, Porcupine Creek, located in Humboldt County. After restoring the ranch, building their new home and Vic's retirement in 1970, Porcupine Creek Ranch was their home for 25 years before moving to Los Alamos, Calif., and Reno.
Being a native Nevadan, Vema loved and appreciated the beauty of desert sunrises and sunsets, snow-covered mountains, sagebrush and wildflowers, bird watching, deserted mining towns, old ranch buildings and barns — all inspiration for her beautiful photography, which she enjoyed sharing with family and friends.
Words and music were her passion. Knowing that her eyesight was failing but not her astute memory, Vema began to write poetry and chronicle her life. Porcupine No. 1, Grandma Says and Grandma Says More adorn our library shelves. We are thankful for the recorded history and will treasure her stories for generations to come.
We cheered, laughed and cried when Verna surprised Vic at Christmas with her gift of song, "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby." Every word and note was perfect as well as her smiie.
Our lives have been enriched with her bold opinions, her sense of humor, her amazing spirit for life and her love of God.
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside still waters. He restoreth my soul: He guideth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, thou I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou hast anointed my head with oil; My cup runneth over. Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever." — Psalm 23
Verna was preceded in death by her grandson, Joshua Lane Anderson; daughter-in-law, Lynn C. Anderson; her brother, Gerwin Bullis and her sister, Carol Echeverria. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Victor O. Anderson; twin sister, Vera Bankofier of Prineville, Ore.; daughters Nancy DiLoreto of Santa Barbara, Calif., Vicki Menante of Reno, and son Eric Anderson of Reno; grandchildren Dale Mikle (Cindy) of Lees Summit, Mo., Todd DiLoreto (Kelly) of Valley Center, Calif., Tony DiLoreto (Kim) of Goleta, Calif., Cammy Dominguez (Joe) of Cambria, Calif., Dean Menante (Lisa), Darin Menante (Lisa), Nino Menante, and Joel Anderson (Janna), all of Reno. She is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren; Nick, Nathan, Andressa. Cole, Loren, Oceana, Sienna, Indigo, Daniel Ashley, Lexie, Dylan, Chloe, Madison, Joshua, Logan and Delainey — rays of sunshine that filled her life with smiles, hugs and so much love. She is also survived by her caring friend, Jan Lawrence, who provide much support and love during her final days.
Also surviving are her nephews, Robert Echeverria of Elko, Ben Echeverria of Arvada, Colo., Joe Bankofier of Bend, Ore., Duane Bankofier of Portland, Ore., and Gary Bullis of Reno.
