MR. ALVIN E. SAWYERS

Alvin Eugene Sawyers died Wednesday, June 27, 2001. He was born December 17, 1929 in Ashland, Kansas, a son of Alvin and Verna Sawyers. He grew up on a farm near Longton, Kansas. Later he moved to Howard, Kansas and attended school in Howard. He spent his teen years swimming, fishing and hunting.

Eugene went with a group of the Howard Methodist Church youth on a camping trip. They were swimming and two girls and the minister were about to drown. Eugene jumped in and saved all three.

He played football in high school. When a junior in high school, he moved to Boise. He worked several years for Morrison Knudsen, putting in dams between Boise and Portland, Oregon. He also worked for the city of Portland for several years. Later he owned his own business for twenty years.

Eugene was a member of the Masonic Lodge #132 since 1964. He was a lifetime member and donated $100 a year for over twenty years to Shriners Circus so children could go to the circus.

He married Betty Henderson of Boise in the home of Eugene's parents, Luther and Verna Mayes, near Howard, KS. To their union, three children were born, Sherry, Eugenia and Thomas. They were later divorced.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 2,2001, by the Masonic Lodge (Doric) and Pastor Robert Newberg at Skyline Chapel in Portland. Private interment was at Apostles, 32-C-4 Skyline Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his mother, Verna Mayes, Boise, two sisters, Phyllis Loyd, Boise and Pat McCann, Sedan, KS.


Howard Courant - July 20, 1911

MR. JOSEPH SCHNEIDER - Submitted by L. Morgan

Joseph Schneider was born in Germany, June 24th, 1833. He came to this country as a young man. At the outbreak of the civil war he responded to President Lincoln's first call and enlisted as a private April 19th, 1861, in Company C, of the 8th Ohio regiment. He was in service a little more than four years, being honorably discharged June 16th, 1865.

He came to Kansas in 1874, locating in Elk county, near Howard. In 1877 he was married to Miss Malinda Fisher, who died March 16th, 1879.

He died July 16th, 1811 at about noon. The funeral service was held in his home, conducted by J. E. Deggendorf, pastor of the Presbyterian church, at two o'clock, July 17th. The remains were interred in Grace Lawn cemetery with military honors by the E.M. Stanton Post, G.A.R.


February 1995

MR. HAROLD A. SCHOUTEN

LATHAM — Harold A. Schouten, 67, of Latham, died Feb. 23, 1995, in Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital, El Dorado.

Born April 29, 1927, in Finney County, he was the son of Theodore and Lillian (Newport) Schouten.

A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army.

He married Elva Young Feb. 10, 1947 in Howard.

Survivors include his wife, Elva Schouten, Latham; two sons, Donn Schouten, Latham, and Kenn Schouten, Leon; two daughters, Joy Clawson, Andover, and Wanda Roudyhush, Latham; nine grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

Services will he p.m. Monday in Latham Community Church. Interment will be in Latham Cemetery. A memorial in Mr. Schouten's name has been established with Latham Community Church.

Hillside Funeral Home, Augusta, has charge of arrangements.


May 5, 1928

MR. KONRAD SCHUL - Submitted by Peggy Schulz Biever

Obituary.
Konrad Schulz was born at Hesse Darmstadt, Germany Feb. 16th, 1846 and died May 5th, 1928, aged 82 years, 3 months and 11 days. He came to America at the age of 15 years, located at Hamilton, Ohio, was married to Elzina Stanton of Eaton, Ohio in 1869 and came to Douglass county in 1870. He moved to Elk county in 1873, pre-emptying a homestead two and one half mile east of Grenola where they resided until 1911, then to their present home on North Main Grenola. This home was broken when the loving companion was called to her reward Oct. 25, 1926.

To this union was born twelve children, four of who preceded him in death. Those living to mourn his loss are ---- and his companion united with -- Logsdon, Katie William, Lydia McAnulty, Anna Burr and Margaret Bowers. Twenty-five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

The deceased was reared in the Lutheran belief and remained a faithful member until in 1875 when he and his companion united with The Church of the Brethren living a true and faithful life to the end.

Grandpa Schul was a man whom all he came in contact with learned to love. A man of sterling qualities and if he was a friend nothing could change him.

The city of Grenola as well as the community were he live outside of the city has lost in is demise a valuable citizen and all bow in grief with his loved ones in the loss. An annointing service was conducted last Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Loshbaugh of Fredonia, and Rev. Fletcher, this in accordance to His wishes found in the 5th chapter of James. The funeral was conducted at the Methodist church at Grenola Sunday, May 6th, 1928 by Rev. W. H. Fletcher assisted by the pastor, R. M. Brown.

October 4, 1901

MRS. MAGGIE SCHUL - Submitted by Peggy Schul Biever

Died
At her residence, seven miles northwest of Moline, Friday, Oct. 4, 1901, Mrs. Maggie Schul, wife of Adam Schul. Her funeral was held in the Independence school house Sunday morning and was largely attended by her neighbors and friends. Her pastor, Rev. Geo. Eller, preached an appropriate sermon from Hebrews 9-17. The internment was made in the Grenola cemetery.

Mrs. Schul was highly respected by all her neighbors. She leaves five children, only two of whom were at the funeral. One son is in Alaska, one in Topeka and one daughter in Beloit. We extend to them our earnest sympathy for their great loss.


March 1991

MRS. MARY LOU SCHUL

Mary Lou Schul, 70, of Grenola, died Thursday morning, March 7, 1991, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.

Born Sept. 6, 1920 in Joplin, Mo., she was the daughter of Mark William and Zanna Catherine Wilson Farrar. She graduated from Joplin High School with the class of 1938, and from Joplin Junior College in 1940. On March 16, 1942, she married Clyde E. Schul in Litchfield Park, Ariz. The Schuls have lived in Grenola since 1964, where Mary Lou was a homemaker, a member of the Grenola United Methodist Church, the Order of Eastern Star, was active in the Rainbows, and has been the Chairperson of the 10-County Council on Aging.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde, of the home; one son, Clayton Schul of Wichita, one daughter, Mary Catherine Wade of Winfield; her mother, Zanna Farrar of Moline; one sister, Jean VanGilst of Annandale, Va.; four grandchildren and one stepgranddaughter.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 Monday, March 11, in the Grenola United Methodist Church, with the Reverend LaDonna Carey officiating. Lyman Wheeler was vocalist and Renee Wells was organist. Interment was in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola. A memorial has been established with the Grenola United Methodist Church. Wheeler Funeral Home of Burden had charge of arrangements.


April 1991

MR. HROLD I. SCOBEE

Harold Ivan Scobee, 79, of Grenola, died Tuesday, April 23, 1991, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. He was born September 11, 1911, in Webb, Oklahoma, to Roy Nathan and Sarah Ethel (Robinson) Scobee. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Belleplain American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, the American Association of Retired Persons, and the Grenola Christian Church. He was a retired Chemical Miller and had been employed by Boeing Aircraft in Wichita for many years.

On December 21, 1943, he and Minnie June Hayden were united in marriage at Wichita, Kansas. She survives at the home. Also surviving is one son, Donald, of Belleplaine, Kansas; two brothers, Merle Scobee of Wichita, Kansas, and Robert Scobee of Augusta, Kansas; four sisters, Gertrude Lister of Howard, Kansas, Myrtle Hayden of Pittsburgh, Kansas, Pearl Bright of Valley Center, Kansas, and Marie Boyd of Rose Meade, California; and 7 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 26, 1991, at 2:00 p.m., in the Grenola Christian Chruch. Interment was in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Grenola. Rev. Wallace Wartick officiated. Watt Funeral Home, Moline, was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial in his name has been established with the Grenola Christian Church and the Grenola Senior Citizens.


January 1992

MRS. MINNIE J. SCOBEE

Minnie June Scobee, 72, of Grenola, Kansas, died January 9, 1992, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. She was born June 29, 1919, in Girard, Kansas, to William and Hattie Johnson Hayden. June was a retired bank teller and a member of the Grenola Christian Church.

On December 21, 1943, in Wichita, Kansas, she married Harold Ivan Scobee. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1991. Survivors include one son, Donald Scobee of Belle Plaine, Kansas; one brother, Adrian Lee Hayden of Pawhuska, Oklahoma; three sisters, Ines Hornbucklc of Howard, Kansas, Merle Powers of Wichita, Kansas, and Shirly Eickholz of Sheridan, Illinois; and 7 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 11, 1992, at 2:00 p.m., in the Grenola Christian Church. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Grenola. Rev. Wallace Wartick officiated. Watt Funeral Home, Moline, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials in her name have been established with the Grenola Senior Citizens and the Grenola Christian Church.


March 1977

MR. GLEN E. SCOTT

Glen E. Scott, age 53, passed away March 15, in Burbank, Calif. He was survived by his wife, Mary Bonnie of Burbank, 2 sons, Ronnie and Steve, Sharon Shew of Wichita & Carol Ann & Ralph Colella of Burbank, his mother Hilda Scott of Howard, two little granddaughters, brother, Hobert of Piedmont, Kans., Carl of Fall River, Ks., Charles of Wichita, Ruth Day of Wichita and his twin sister Glenice Bazner of Main Hawaii.

Glen attended school at Piedmont, He served in the Europeon Theater Operation during World War II.

His father preceded him in death Feb., 1963 and an infant son, March 25, 1953.

Military services were held in Burbank, Calif., on March 18, 1977.


September 1967

MRS. SARAH L. SEIMEARS

Sarah LuCretia Seimears, daughter of George and Nancy (Hoyt) was born June 26, 1881, at Neodesha, Kansas. She grew up and spent her young adult life in Elk county.

In 1898, she was married to Frank W. Seimears at Cave Springs, Kansas. To this union were born six children. Three sons, Garland, John and Walter; two grandchildren, and two brothers, Walter and Wesley, proceeded her in death.

LuCretia moved to California in 1934 and resided there until three years ago when she suffered a stroke and went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Allie Cullins, in Tyrone, Oklahoma. She had been in the Eureka Rest Home for tho past year.

She was a member of the Seven Day Advontist church. She also belonged to the Rebekah Lodge and Fair Valley Grange in San Dimas. California.

Mrs. Seimears is survived by three daughters, Ardelia Seimears, Alta Hillman, Glendora, California, and Allie Cullins, Tyrone, Oklahoma; two daughters-in-law; 22 grandchildren: 41 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Spurrier-Watt Funeral Home, Howard, at 2:00 p. m., October 2, with the Rev. Russell Buck, Olpe, officiating. Music was presented by a duo, composed of Mrs. Everett Wilnerd and Mrs. Butch Dilli, accompanied by Mrs. Robin Smith at the origin. Casket bearers wore Holly M. Miller, William Gragg, Louis Hebb, Jess Barger, John Heater and Alva Crismas. Concluding services and interment were in Grace Lawn cemetery,Howard.


October 1967

MRS. ELLEN M. SELE

Ellen M. Sele, youngest child of Lars S. and Edwardena Sele, was born May 4, 1883, at the farm home in Otter Creek township and passed away at Twilight Manor, Howard, Kansas, October 18, 1967.

Ellen grew up in Greenwood county and attended Pleasant View and Severy schools. She was baptized and reared in the Lutheran faith. Ellen was the last of a family of ten children.

Preceding her in death were her father and mother; three brothers and six sisters. Survivors include a nephew, Glenn Osborn, with whom she made her home; three other nephews; three nieces; a number of great nieces and nephews; two step-sons and their wives; four step-grandchildren and many friends.

She spent many years caring for her father in his last years, also caring for one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 21 in the chapel of the Spurrier-Watt Funeral Home, Howard at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. R. F. Schaechtele, Eureka, officiated. Music was presented by Mrs. Curtis Morgan, accompanied by Mrs. Arthur Cummins at the organ. Casket bearers were Harold McLean, Hobart Scott, Ted Schouten, Floyd Norman, Seven Beitz and Glenn Osborn. Concluding services and burial were in Otter Creek cemetery, north of Piedmont.


October 1996

MR. FRANCIS J. SEXTON

RUPERT, Idaho - Francis J. Sexton, 81, formerly of Elk County, died Saturday, Oct. 19, at Minidoka Memorial Hospital in Rupert, Idaho. Services were last Monday in Rupert.

Mr. Sexton was born on Nov. 6, 1914, in Elk County to Charles and Lola (Fields) Sexton. He grew up in Clovis, N.M., where he attended school.

He served in the Army and was stationed in the Philippines during World War II. After the war, he worked as an auto mechanic and moved to Rupert in 1959.

He was a member and a deacon in the Christian Church.

On Aug. 4, 1941, he married Edythe L. Foster in Carthage, Mo. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Edwin, Washington; a sister, Freda Ayers, Kennewick, Wash.; a brother, David Sexton, Aberdeen Md.; and a grandson.


Elk County Citizen - October 12, 1904

MR. FRED SEXTON - Submitted by L. Morgan

Fred Sexton
Died in Portales, N. M., September 29, 1904. Fred Sexton, aged 30 years.

Fred Sexton was born in Iroquois county, Illinois, February 10, 1874. In 1880 he came to Elk county with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Sexton, and grew to manhood here. He became a member of the Christian church in 1896, and in 1898 went to the Philippines, a member of the Twentieth Kansas. He served his term in the army with honor to himself and his country.

After his return home, he was united in marriage to Miss Iva I. Keath, May 4, 1902. They lived for a time in Kansas City and then came back to Longton. The dreaded disease comsumption had marked him for a victim and in hopes of bettering his health they went to Roswell, N. M., and later to Portales, where he died.

The body was brought to Longton and the funeral services were conducted in the Congregational church by Elder N. Hill of Elk Falls, Sunday, October 2nd. The remains were laid to rest in the Longton cemetery by loving relatives and friends.

This is the cutting short of a life of promise. He will be mourned by family and friends as a noble and honorable young man whose short life was lived consistently with his religion. Brave on the field of battle, tender by the fireside and always to be admired as a manly man, a patriotic citizen and a true and loving husband. - Longton Gleaner.


January 1995

MR. ASHBY F. SHAFF

Ashby F. Shaff, 87, of Twin Falls died Friday, January 6, 1995 at West Magic Care Center in Twin Falls.

He was born June 25, 1907 in Grenola. He married Marjorie E. Divine on June 22, 1929. He served on a supply ship in the South Pacific as a storekeeper in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He owned and operated a ladies’ dress shop with his wife in Garden City for a number of years until retirement in 1968. They moved to San Diego for a short time before coming to Twin Falls in 1972. His wife, Marjorie, died in 1989.

He is survived by a son Jim Shaff of southern California, and his sister Marguerite Forsyth and her husband Ray of Jerome.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of White Mortuary in Twin Falls.

MRS. BLANCHE SHAW

WICHITA - Blanche Louise Shaw passed away on Friday, July 1, 2005, at Via Christi St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita, Kan. She was 79 years of age and a resident of Wichita.

Blanche was born on July 18, 1925, on a farm south of Moline, to Ralph and Lettie Ann (McAlister) McGregor. She attended rural schools and graduated from Moline High School in 1942. Blanche moved to Wichita, where she attended Business College and was employed at the Federal Land Bank office.

On Nov. 25, 1952, she married Harold Stanley Shaw at Wichita. Blanche and Harold made their home at Galesburg and Parsons, where she was employed at the Kansas State Hospital in Parsons until her retirement. After she retired, they moved to Mountain Home, Ark., where they owned and operated a photo shop. After the death of her husband, Blanche returned to make her home in Wichita.

Blanche enjoyed collecting Hummel figurines and had an extensive collection. She was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wichita.

She is survived by her companion, Wilbur Arbuckle, Wichita, Kan.; her brother, John McGregor, Sedan, Kan.; her sister, Eva Malone, Moline, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at the Moline United Methodist Church, with Rev. Gary Parsons officiating. Interment was held at the Belknap Cemetery, south of Moline.

A memorial has been established with the Moline United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left with the funeral home.

The funeral arrangements are being made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

MRS. BARBARA J. SHEEL - Submitted by L. Morgan

Howard - Barbara Jean Sheel, of Conroe, Texas and formerly of Moline, died Friday at Conroe.

Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Moline Cemetery with Pastor Dave Sancher of Christian Community Church in Longton officiating. Cremation has taken place.

Memorials are suggested to the Fisher Center for Alzsheimers Research Foundation. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral HOme of Howard which is handling the arrangements.

Mrs. Sheel was born Feb. 24, 1936 at Fredonia, the daughter of John M. and Edna Grace Murphy Dexter.

She married Eldon L, Sheel on Feb. 14, 1955 at Longton United Methodist Church. Mr. Sheel died in 1988.

The family made their home in Moline most of their lives. Mrs. Sheel was a member of Moline United Methodist Church and order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Sheel is survived by a son, Carl Sheel, Wichita; a daughter, Patti Chappoter, Forth Worth, Texas, a sister, Marilyn Marquis, Pillsburg, Pa., four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

MRS. NORA B. SHEEL

Nora Belle “Pody” Sheel passsed away Friday, June 8, 1990, at the Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline. She was 87 years of age. Pody, as she was known to her friends, was born on July 26, 1902 at Vermillion, Kansas to Van B. and Lillie Johnson Oliver. She attended elementary school at Bancroft, Kansas and came with her family to the Ames Chapel Community, south of Moline, at the age of ten. In 1916, she graduated from the eighth grade at Center School in Chautauqua County.

On February 28, 1922, Pody married Elmer William Sheel at Moline, Kansas and to this union was born a daughter, Joyce. They owned and operated a farm northeast of Moline until moving to her present home in town, in 1950. Elmer preceded her in death on September 9, 1974.

She enjoyed taking care of her home and her family, and was especially known for her skill at baking cookies. Pody was a member of the Moline United Methodist Church, and spent Monday afternoons quilting at the church with her friends.

She is survived by her daughter Joyce Coble and husband Glenn of Moline, her sister Ina Julian Buchele and husband Ned, also of Molinc, two grandchildren, Van Coble, his wife Jeannctte and son Zachary of Winfield and Jill Coble of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her husban, her parents, a brother Martin Oliver, and two sisters, Lillian BonJour Coble and Eunice Oliver.

Funeral services werc held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 11, 1990 at the Moline United Methodist Church with Rev. LaDonna Carey officiating. Mrs. Sharle Watkins was the organist with Lloyd G. Zimmerman singing “Beyond The Sunset” and "In the Garden", The casket bearers were Steve Julian, Mahion Durbin, Ron Ford, David Brace, Harold Sheel and Ed Durbin. Interment was held in the Moline Cemetery. A memorial has been established with the Moline United Methodist Church. contributions can be left with the funeral home. Funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

MASTER GEORGE A. SHEPHERD - Submitted by L. Morgan

George Alden Shepherd
George Alden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shephard, born at Hartford, Kansas, December 10, 1925, passed away at their home southeast of Howard, Friday morning, October 3, 1930, at 6:35, at the age of four years, nine months and 24 days.

When George was but a babe he was enrolled in the cradle roll of the Elmanadaro Presbyterian Sunday school and endeared himself to his Sunday school teachers.

Little George leaves to mourn his early departure his little sister and playmate, Lucile, his father and mother; Grandfather and Grandmother Shepherd, Grandfather and Grandmother Andrews, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

"A little one from us is gone; a voice we loved is still; a place is vacant in our home that never can be filled."

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the home by Rev. W.C. Chappell, pastor of the Howard Methodist church, with interment in Grace Lawn cemetery, at Howard.


August 1990

MRS. FRANKIE M. SHOUSE

Frankie M. Shouse, 87, of Lafontaine, died Monday, Aug. 20, 1990 at Colonial Lodge nursing home in Independence.

Services were Wednesday, Aug. 22, 1990 at the Lafontaine Christian Church with the Rev. Ron McMillen officiating. Burial was at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City. Memorials are suggested to the Lafontaine Christian Church. Timmons Funeral Home of Fredonia was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shouse was born Jan. 30, 1903, at Longton to John W. and Margaret E. (Flesher) Hughes. She was married on Oct. 20, 1920, in Independence, to Preston Melvin Darett. He died in May 1963. In 1965, she married Leamon Shouse and he died in 1978. Mrs. Shouse was a member of the Lafontaine Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Melvin Darrett of Big Springs, TX., and Doyle Darett of Fort Worth, TX.; one daughter, Berniece Massoth of Lafontaine; three sisters, Lola Bright of Independence, Bernice Huffman of St John and Goldie (last name available) of Meade; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

MR. DENNIS E. SIGNER

Dennis Eugene Signer, 44, of Emporia, formerly of Howard, died Friday in an auto accident at Emporia.

Funeral servlc&s will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Severy United Methodist Church in Severy, with the Rev. Robert Cooper officiating. Burial will be at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard. Memorials are suggested to the Scholarship Fund for the Children of Dennis Signer, with Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Signer was born on Feb. 21, 1951, at Eureka to Clifton Eugene and Mary L (Miller) Signer. He graduated from Howard High School in 1969. He was supervisor of Iowa Beef Processing (IBP) of Emporia. He married Linda Brown. She survives at the home. The, couple lived in the Howard and Severy area before moving to Emporia in recent years.

Other survivors include a son, Ryan, Manhattan; a daughter, Tamara Signer, Emporia; mother, Mary Buck of Severy; and two brothers, Lyle, Perry, Ga., and Ted, Houston, Texas.

MRS. GLADYS E. SIGNER - Submitted by L. Morgan

HOWARD — Gladys Evelyn Signer, 73, longtime resident of Severy, died Feb. 28, 2006, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Severy Baptist Church. Pastor Tony Pameticky wifi officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Greenwood County Hospice of Eureka. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Signer was bom April 17, 1932, at Newton, to Andrew Matthew and Effie (Bohanon) Adler. After the death of her parents in 1941, she lived with her sister and husband, Ruby and Bill Willich, She attended school at Leon until they moved to a farm southeast of Piedmont. She graduated from Piedmont High School in 1950.

On April 25,1951, she married Frank Junior Signer at Bentonville, Ark., and to this union were born a son and two daughters. They moved to a farm near Howard in 1953 and later lived in Texas and Alabama before returning to Elk County in the late 1950s.

Signer was employed as a certified nurse's assistant at the opening of Howard Twilight Manor in 1966. In 1969, the family moved to Severy where they remained until moving to Moline in 1972, Signer worked at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline until returning to Severy in 1977. She was employed at Frank Bills Trucking at Severy before devoting her time to caring for her family.

Her husband preceded her in death.

She is survived by a son, Steven Signer, Piedmont; two daughters, Patty Craig, Sever, and Joetta Damalt, Caney; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Minnie Maurine Hamilton passed away on November 23, 1998 at Kansas City, Kansas. She was 83 years of age. Charles Leonard Simkins passed away on June 14, 2002 at Kansas City, Kansas. He was 94 years of age. They were both residents of the Kansas City area.

Minnie Maurine Hamilton was born in Murray, Iowa on September 10, 1915, one of four children born to the family of Maude Hayes and David Hamilton. She moved with her family to and went to elementary and High School in Elk Falls, Kansas. She graduated from Elk Falls High School and went to college in Emporia where, in her junior year, she met Charles Leonard Simkins. They were married on June 21, 1941 at Emporia, Kansas.

Charles Leonard Simkins was born on September 21, 1907 in Reading, Kansas, one of five children born to the family of Lucy Ann Caldwell and Jeremiah Simkins. He attended Elementary and High School at Border High School in Reading and went on to college at Emporia, majoring in French and Spanish, where he met Maurine and married her.

Maurine taught school in Gardner, Kansas and Charles taught in Reading. In 1941 Charles was called to duty in the United States Army and served one year overseas in the Medical Corps while his wife went to Business College. Upon his return from the military, he worked for Civil Service with the Railroad Retirement Board and his wife worked for several businesses including Kenworth and Mobay until her retirement. Charles was a lifelong amateur photographer and collected antique cameras. They moved to the Kansas City area, where they lived and worked the rest of their lives.

They had one daughter, Annette, born in 1948 and she graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence in the spring of 1970 with a major in French and a minor in German. In 1972 Annette and her husband had a daughter, Nicole Annette Ary, who was the joy of Maurine and Charles. Later in life, Annette remarried, to James English and they live in the Kansas City area. Maurine has a surviving brother, Dale Hamilton of Howard, Kansas, a surviving sister-in-law, Louise Hamilton of Wichita, Kansas and three surviving nephews, Mike D. Hamilton of Washington, D.C., Gary Gossen of Nevada and Jim Hamilton of California.

MRS. VERA E. SIMMONS

Vera E. Simmons, 91, died July 6, 1994 at Dillon Living Center in Hutchinson.

She was born January 7, 1903, near Howard, the daughter of William and Nina Flanders Jay. A Hutchinson resident since 1935, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Women’s Society of Christian Service of the church, the Silver Leaf Chapter No. 464 Order of the Eastern Star and the Social Order of Beaceant Hutchinson Assembly No. 147, all of Hutchinson.

On September 30, 1923, she married R. Eddy Simmons at Howard, he died June 1, 1993.

Survivors include: a son Donald of Brookshire, TX.; a brother Deanus Jay of Wichita; a sister Vida Baughman of Howard; and a grandson.

Funeral service were held July 9, 1994 at the Elliott Chapel in Hutchinson, with the Rev. Doug Hasty presiding. A Silver Leaf Chapter No. 464 Order of the Eastern Star service followed at the chapel. Graveside service were held at 3 p.m. on the same day in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard with the Rev. Donald O’Hara presiding. Columbia Chapter No. 142 Order of the Eastern Star provided services at the cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Kansas Masonic Home or to the Dillon Living Center, both in care of the mortuary. Funeral arrangement were made with Elliott Mortuary of Hutchinson.

MR. B. L.

B. L. Simons, 86, a long time resident of California, died in the Dinuba Convalescent hospital the evening of July 7, 1966, following a long illness. He had been in the hospital for a number of months.

Funeral services were held in the Orange Cove, California, First Presbyterian church at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 11. The Rev. H. F. Truscott, a former pastor of the church, now living in Madera, conducted the service. Burial was in Reedley cemeery under the direction of Cairns chapel.

Simons was born in Kansas, August 16, 1879. Had he lived until August 16 of this year, he would have been 87. He was a retured farmer.

He and the former Vera Clark were married December 20, 1905, at Howard, Kansas. They celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1955 with a family dinner in the home of their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Frane.

Simons was a former eleder of the Presbyterian church where he was active in other church dukties for many years.

The family came to the Mt. Olive didstrict 46 years ago from South Dakota. After 19 years of residence in that community, they moved to Orange Cove, which has been their home since that time.

Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Vera Simons of 669 Third St., Orange Cove; a daughter, Mrs. Alice Frane, also of Orange Cove; three sons, Clark Simons, of Yuba City; Lewis Simons of Reedley and Don Simons of Fresno; a brother, Frnk Simons of Howard, Kansas; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

MRS. MARY S. SIMS

Mary Serena Pebley, daughter of Newton and Martha Pebley, was born November 19, 1857 at Tecumseh. She lived in Kansas most of her life.

She was united in marriage to James Edward Sims on February 14, 1879 at Howard. They lived near Fall River and Severy for several yuears. Then left here 23 years ago and moved to Caney. Mr. Sims preceded her in death on March 20, 1940. Mrs. Sims went to Dorrance recently to make her home with her son, Ray. She had been in ill health for several years. She passed away March 4, 1942 at age of 84.

Pall bearers were Miles Sims, Ray Sims, George Morton, Vilas Meadows, Wallace Lindsey and Elon Taylor.

Surviving relaties are: two daughters, Edna Crawford of Fairfield, Illinois and Mabel Hurd of Herd, Oklahoma; three sons Miles of Hoisington, Ray of Dorrance and Will of Victor, California. There are several grandchildren and great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. L. T. Morton of Monett. Rev. Floyd C. Moss was charge of the service at the Riley Memorial cemeteryin Monnett.

Graveside services for Mrs. Mary Serena Sims, 84 who died Mar. 4 at the home of her son Ray, at Dorrance, were conducted by the Rev. Floyd Moss of Sedan in the Morton lot at Monett in the Riley Memorial cemetery. Pallbearers were Miles and Ray Sims, George Morton, Vilas Meadows, Wallace Lindsey and Elon Taylor.

Relatives from a distance for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Sims of Dorrance, Miles Sims of Hoisington, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Lindsey and daughter, Sandra, Mrs. Richard Fair and daughter, Patty Lou and Mrs. R. E. Fletcher, all of Herd, Okla., and George Morton of Howard. Mrs. Sims, the former Mary Pebley, was born Nov. 19, 1857, at Tecumseh. She was married Feb. 14, 1879, to James Edward Sims at Howard. They lived near Fall River and Severy several years, moving 23 years ago from Severy to Caney. Mr. Sims died Mar. 20, 1940, and a few months ago Mrs. Sims moved to Dorrance to the home of her son. MR. RICHARD SLATER - 1916 - Submitted by Barbara Okerson Rodgers

Richard SLATER was born at New Castle, Northumberland county, England, on October 28, 1834. He died at Carnegie, Oklahoma, on February 17, 1917, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 20 days. He was Christened into the Methodist church in infancy.
He came to this country when young and took up life with the sturdy people in the east, settling in Maryland. On April 1, 1856, he was united in marriage to Jane Emma AVERY at Cumberland, Maryland. About twelve years later he moved to Kansas with his wife and family, settling in Howard county. He arrived in the state in July 3, 1868, and obtained some land from the Indians. For three years he paid his taxes to the Indians. His daughter, Mrs. Ed Okerson, of Carnegie, Oklahoma, was the first white child to be born in what was then Howard county.
On May 15, 1890, he moved to Sumner county, locating in Seventy-six township. In 1907 he moved to Caddo county, Oklahoma.
He was the father of fourteen children. His wife and six of the children passed on before him. He leaves to mourn his death a brother, three sons and five daughters. The three sons are John, Joe and Richard, and the daughters are Mrs. Sarah IMEL, Mrs. Elizabeth BRUCE, Mrs. Dorothy MITTS, Mrs. Abbie OKERSON and Mrs. Linnie BARNES.

MR. BILLY G. SMITH

Billy (Bill) G. Smith, 59, of Garden Plain, Kansas passed away at the Green Meadow Nursing Center at Haysville, Kansas on Thursday, Dec. 13 after a short illness.

He was born March 15, 1931 at Oak Valley, Kansas to William and Flora (Wheeler) Smith. Bill attended Oak Valley and Longton Schools and graduated in 1950.

On November 16, 1952 he married Delores Weber.

He spent 15 years in the Air Force and was employed by Dolese Brothers in Wichita, until illness forced his retirement. Bill is survived by his wife Delores of the home, three sons, Robert of Hutchinson, Gregory of Tupelo, Mississippi, Jeffery of Mt. Hope; one daughter, Theresa of Arvada, Colorado and 13 grandchildren; three brothers, John of Moline, George and Sherwood of Longton and one sister Betty Howell of Eureka.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

The Rosary was held at 8 p.m. on Dec. 17 followed by the funeral on Dec. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. AnthoneyS Catholic Church in Garden Plain with Rev. Kenneth Melaragno officiating. Burial was in Garden Plain Cemetery with Hillside Funeral Home of Wichita in charge of arrangements.

MR. GEORGE R. SMITH

LONGTON — George Ross Smith, 69, died April 11, 1996, at his home in Longton.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard with burial in Longton Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Keith will officiate, and military rites will be conducted by CarterRader American Legion Post 149 of Howard. A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.

Born Aug. 5, 1926, at Oak Valley, he was the son of William M. and Flora E. (Wheeler) Smith. He graduated from Longton High School in 1944 and served with the U.S. Army in Germany and Austria from 1945 to 1947.

On Aug. 16, 1947, he married Melba Leota Baughman at Moline, and they lived in Wichita before moving to Longton in 1962.

Smith was employed as a crane operator for a construction company in Wichita. After moving to Longton, he worked as an auto mechanic and for the Elk County Road Department. He was employed by Hackney Trucking as a driver from 1974 until retiring in 1984.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Willie Smith, Bay Point, Calif., and Milo Smith, Clearwater; four daughters, Fonetta Keith, Rose Hill, Waunita Floyd, Fall River, Linda Seamans, Elk City, and Mary Ann Moore, Longton; a brother, John Smith, Moline; a sister, Betty Howell, Eureka; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

MRS. GLADYS M. SMITH

Gladys Marguerite Smith passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at the Medicalodge of Wichita in Wichita, Kansas. She was 91 years of age and a resident of Sedan, KS. Margie, as she was known, was born on September 25, 1909 in London, England to Frederick William and atherine Amelia (Kiff) Barwell. She graduated from high school and attended college in London.

On September 25, 1945, she married Walter Elias Smith at Brighton, England and they moved to Nova Scotia, Canada. Margie made a home for her family in Nova Scotia until moving to Wichita in 1962. She was employed at the Mutual of Omaha office in Wichita for several years. In 1975, Margie and Wally moved to Fredonia, KS, where they lived until moving to Sedan earlier this year.

She was a member of the Coyville Baptist Church in Coyville, KS.

She is survived by her husband, Wally Smith, Sedan, KS, her sons, Colin Smith, Nova Scotia, Elroy Smith, Sedan, KS and Michael Smith, Wichita, KS. her daughters, Diane Smith and Jacqueline Corbin, both of Nova Scotia and Belinda Preskorn, Wichita, KS, twelve grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Two brothers, one sister and three grandchildren preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001, at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard with Rev. Richard Kinson of the Coyville Baptist Church officiating. JoAnn Smith played piano selections in The Garden and! Won’t Have To Cross Jordan Alone. The casket bearers were Colin Smith, Elroy Smith, Michael Smith. Mike Smith, Sean Smith and Winston Smith. Interment was held at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard, KS.

MR. JESSE SMITH

Jesse Alden Smith passed away on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at his home in Vancouver, Wa. He was 89 years of age and a former resident of Elk Falls. Smitty, as he was known, was born on Aug. 19, 1912, in Elk Falls, Kan. to Fran E. and Lena L. Smith.

In 1937, he married Jennie Almeda Keith at Sedan and she preceded him in death in 1970.

He and his family had lived in Vancouver, Wa. since 1943. Smitty was a retired steamfitter who enjoyed dancing, playing cards and oil painting.

He was a member of the Steamfitters Local #235 for 46 years and spent 20 years working as a Steamfitter Foreman for the Portland School District.

Smitty was a charter member of the Vancouver Yacht Club and a member of the Vancouver Elks, Eagles and Moose lodges.He was also a member of the Quail Valley Association in Desert Hot Springs, Calif.

He is survived by two sons, L. Keith Smith of Vancouver and Wendell M. Smith of Woodland; 10 grandchildren; several greatgrandchildren; and his special companions Nina Thomas and Rick and Roxanne Rowe.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the Moline Cemetery in Moline, Kansas with Pastor Robin Haines of the Flint Hills Assembly of God in Howard officiating.

Cremation took place in Vancouver, Washington. Local arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

MR. O. T. SMITH

0. T. Smith, son of James and Mary Smith, was born May 14, 1879, near Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and departed this life August 24, 1956, at the age of 77 years, three months and ten days. He was married to Hattie H. Goans, September 1, 1901, at Noeton, Tennessee. Eight children were born to this union, two dying in infancy. He became a member of the Church of Christ in 1922 at Fiat, Kansas. He was an elder of the church for a number of years. He was a true Christian in a every sense of the word.

He leaves to mourn his departure his loving wife, who was a true cornpanion; six children, Herman Smith, Virginia, Illinois; Mrs. Eleanor Jontea, Wichita, Kansas; Bernard Smith, Hastings, Nebraska; Mrs. Alberta Phipps, Haysi, Virginia; Mrs. Myrtle Sullivan, Tulsa, Oklahoma; Kenneth Smith, Howard, Kansas. Three grandchiidren preceded him in death Mary Louise Sullivan, Anita Beatrice Jontra, and one beloved son-in-law, Frank Combs. He leaves twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren; also two brothers and two sisters, Garfield Smith, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Jack Smith, Wichita, Kansas; Mrs. Avonia Halo, Redondo Beach, California. and Mrs. Gwendion Cantrell, Wichita, Kansas, and a host of relatives and friends. His daughters-in-law were very close to him. He loved them as his own children.

Memorial services were held at the Moon Chapel in Howard at 2:30 p. m., Sunday. August 26th, conducted by H. E. Nimrod and Roy Bixler. Music was furnished by Mrs. Raymond Taliaferro, Mrs. John Flock, Ralph Sullivan and John Sullivan. The casket bearers were Glen Jontra, Leslie Anderson, Kenneth Alliston, Arthur Cummins, John Flock and Johnnie Murphy. Concluding services and burial were at Cresco cemetery, north of Howard, Kansas.

MRS. PAULINE SMITH

Pauline Smith passed away on Wednesday. December 26, 2001 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. She was 86 years of age and a long time resident of Howard. Pauline was born on January 16, 1915 on a farm near Howard, Kansas to Benjamin and Nannie Bell (Baird) Corbin. She attended Mary Belle rural school and graduated from Howard High chool in 1935.

On February 26, 1938, she married Kenneth Owen Smith at Moline, Kansas and to this union was born a daughter, Paula, and two sons Ron and Donald. Pauline was a devoted wife and mother, and dedicated her life to making a home for her family. She also worked many years as the Howard correspondent for The Flint Hills Express newspaper. Kenneth preceded her in death on January 6, 1994.

She was a member of the Cowgirls singing group, a local group of talented women who played as far away as Texas and were also heard on radio. She also enjoyed attending the weekly music programs in Fall River and Longton. Pauline enjoyed growing flowers and gardening with Kenneth. She was a long time member of the Howard Church of Christ.

She is survived by her daughter, Paula Lanning of Howard; her sons, Ron Smith of Haysville and Donald Smith of Wichita; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Byrnum McFall and Margarette Cummins.

Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m. Satuday, December 29, 2001 the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard with Pastor Robin Haines of the Flint Hills Assembly of God officiating. A eulogy was given by Virgil Shields. Betty Russell was the organist. Recorded selections were played of "Rodeo” by Garth Brooks and “All My Ex’s Live in Texas” by George Strait.

Private interment was held at Cresco Cemetery, north of Howard. A memorial has been established with the Howard Church of Christ. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

MR. ROBERT B. SMITH

Robert B. Smith died March 2, 1996 at his home in Hotchkiss, Colorado. He was born February 6, 1929 in Howard, Kansas to Fred Smith and Maude (Criger) Smith. He attended Cresco grade school and graduated from Howard High School in 1946, where he lettered in football, basketball and track. He received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from Kansas State College. He taught Veterans on the Farm training and then returned to the family farm to raise cattle and dairy cows. He later became a real estate appraiser for the U.S. Government and retired as Chief Appraiser for the Bureau of Reclamation.

He was married to Ruth Ann Smith of Longton and they had 3 children, Debbie Irving of Bethesda, Maryland, Cindy Smith of Austin, Texas and David Smith of Phoenix, Arizona. He later married Dee Sitz of Denver, Colorado. All survive including his son-in-law, Bill lrving.

He was a member of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers and a Post Master of the Masonic Lodge.

Services were held on March 6, 1996 at Hotchkiss United Methodist Church. Taylor Funeral Services of Hotchkiss, Colorado handled the arrangements.

MR. STUART SMITH

Stuart Smith, a former resident of Elk County passed away June 25, 1996 in Tucson, AZ. at the age of 89 years. The son of the Sherman Smiths he had spent his boyhood on the farm and attended Howard High School and college in Illinois. He was with the Sinclair Oil and Gas Co. thirty-nine years, working in Kansas and Texas.

He was married to Thelma Lee and they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversaty last November.

After his retirement in 1969, they traveled extensively and decided to retire in Tucson.

Survivors include his wife. Thelma. and son Stuart Lee, his brother, F.W. Smith of Howard, KS. as well as nieces and nephews.

PASTOR TED SMITH

Oscar Theodore “Ted” Smith, Jr. passed away on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the Sedan City Hospital in Sedan, Kan. He was 66 years of age and a resident of Moline, Kan. Ted, as he was known, was born on Aug. 29, 1936, at Emporia, Kan., to Oscar Theodore and Coie Devore (McCloud) Smith. He attended school at Hamilton, Kan., and graduated from high school in Newhall, Calif.

After graduating from high school, Ted returned to Kansas where he was employed in sales at Wichita before moving to Emporia. In September of 1955, he married Mary Jo Cowan at Emporia and to this union was born two sons. After this marriage ended in 1966, Ted married Carol Marie (Lyder) Carlisle on May 26, 1967, at Emporia and to this union was born two daughters.

Ted owned and operated the Launderette and a rug cleaning business at Emporia until 1973. He managed a trucking company at Allen, Kan., before moving to Hamilton in 1974 where he became employed in oil field work. Ted retired from the oil fields in 1998 and became the pastor of the Moline Christian Church at Moline.

He was a former member of The Gideons International, a pastmaster of Hamilton Masonic Lodge and was a past-worthy patron of the Gaza Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star at Hamilton.

He is survived by his wife, Carol of Moline; his sons, Monty and Randy, both of Topeka; his daughters, Dianne Boles of Eureka and Tedi Simpson of Topeka; his brothers, William Smith of Benton, Kan., and Alan “Jim” Smith of Wichita his sisters, Oma Weston and Leta Sherrill, both of Hamilton and Margie Gregory of Gardnerville, Nev.; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at the Moline Christian Church with Pastor Larry Evans of the Neal Evangelical Free Church officiating. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Janesville Cemetery in Hamilton, Kan.

Memorials have been established with the Moline Christian Church and The Gideons International. Contributions may be left with the funeral home.

MR. WALTER E. SMITH

Born April 27, 1921 on Cape Island Nova Scotia Canada and died June 9, 2005 in Sedan Kan. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie Gladys Smith and his daughter, Jacqueline, of Halifax Nova Scotia Canada.

Walter and Marjorie married on Sept. 25, 1945 at Brighton, England. They met while he was stationed in England during World War II. He is survived by his sons, Elroy Smith, Sedan Kan. and his wife, JoAnn, Michael Smith, Wichita Kan. and his wife, Kim; and Colin Smith Nova Scotia Canada and his wife, Shelia, his daughters, Belinda Preskorn, Wichita Kan. and her husband, Sheldon and Diane Smith, Nova Scotia Canada and her husband, Merle, 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and nine great great grandchildren.

Walter proved throughout his life that he was a survivor. As a young man in his early 20s, he was in the first wave that landed on the beaches of Normandy. During the subsequent campaign to liberate Europe from the Nazis, Walter displayed unusual bravery for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the British Empire, equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor. King George VI personally presented Walter this medal during a lull in the fighting in a ceremony on a British ship in the English Channel.

After the war, Walter returned to his birthplace of Nova Scotia Canada with his bride, Marjorie. He returned to fishing for a livelihood. In January 1957, Walter and his crew were stationed on the Grand Banks in the frigid North Atlantic when his boat was flipped by a wave. All of the crew save for Walter was lost as a result of this accident. Walter climbed on the hull of the over-turned boat and held onto the engine mount for two hours as the boat was progressively chewed up by the tide battering the boat on the jagged ledge which forms the Grand Banks. He was eventually saved by another Canadian fishing boat which spotted his dire predicament.

Walter and Marjorie, a few years after this accident, moved with a number of their children to Wichita Kan. When Walter retired, they moved to live first in Oak Manor, Kan., near Fredonia Kan. and subsequently to Sedan Kan. Walter enjoyed being with people and particularly was fond of the staff and customers of the Ranch Restaurant in Sedan. He also took pride and pleasure in accomplishments of his extended family.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2005, at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard, Kan., with Pastor Robin Haines of the Flint Hills Assembly of God officiating. Interment was held at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard.

Memorials have been established with Gideon’s International, Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and Pleasant Valley Manor of Sedan. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

C. A. Spease was born February 15, 1850 in the state of Pennsylvania and died at his home in Winfield, Kansas, Januaryl 20, 1922, being 71 years, 11 months and 5 days old.

In 1874 he was married to Miss Rachel F. Smith of Crawford county, Kansas. He moved at once to a homestead in Elk county, ten miles west of Howard, where he made his home until a little over two years ago, when he moved to Winfield.

Eight children were born to this union, four of whom have preceded him to the spirit world. There remain of the family to mourn his loss, his wife, Mrs. Rachel F. Spease, and four daughters, namely, Mrs. Alice Abbot, of Arcadia Kansas; Mrs. Cora Leo, of Piedmont, Kansas; Mrs. Elsie M(?)ockman, of Exdello, Missouri; and Miss Maucle Spease of Winfield, Kansas. There are thirteen grandchildren and a number of nephews and neices to our brother was well-nigh as dear as a father.

Brother Spease was the only living, member of a family of ten children. He was converted at about the age, of 17 at an old fashioned Methodist camp meeting. He joined the Methodist Episcopal church soon after, and remained a firm advocate of early Methodist doctrine until the end. He joined the Nazarine church at Howard in 1906. Upon establishing his home at Winfield he became a member of the Free Methodist, and soon made for himself a place among which we will find difficulty in filling with another. Our loss is his gain. His departure was peaceful. Let us follow him as he followed Christ. Funeral services were held at the church in Winfield, Monday, January 23rd. The remains were brought to the old home and laid to rest the Clear Creek cemetery, the services at both places being conducted by his past Rev. Edward C. Lindley.

Mary (Swindler) Sprague
Mary Elizabeth Swindler was born in Kokomo, Indiana, April 20, 1861, and departed this life at her home in Howard, Kansas, November 4, 1929, at the age of 68 years, 6 months, and 14 days.

She came with her parents to Howard, Kansas, in the year 1878, and has lived in or near Howard ever since that time.

She became a member of the local Christian church early in life and was a faithful member until she passed to her reward.

She was united in marriage to Charles Henry Sprague, July 30, 1882. To this union one son was born, Clayton Valentine, who has preceded his mother across the River of Death, departing this life, October 8, 1913. Mr. Sprague, the husband and father, passed away a few years later, leaving the devoted, loving wife and mother alone in the world.

She leaves one brother, John W. Swindler, New Albany, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Calla Abbott, Kansas City, Missouri; eight nephews, two nieces and other relatives and a host of friends to mourn her departure.

Obituary of Myrtle Augusta Sprague
Myrtle Augusta Sprague, the youngest daughter of C. Dale and Maria Sprague, was born near Elk Falls, January 1, 1908, and departed this life August 12, 1933, in the Moline hospital having been hurt in an automobile accident. She had been in the Newton hospital at Winfield, Kansas for the past two years, training to be a nurse, and was spending a three weeks vacation at the home of her mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Brown of Elk Falls. She was educated in the schools of Elk Falls, graduating from high school with the class of 1926. She was employed several years in the Elk Falls telephone exchange, where she gave very satisfactory service.

She decided upon a life's work as a nurse, one of the noblest professions open to womanhood. Myrtle was an exceptionally fine woman, and enjoyed the confidence and respect of all who knew her. She attended the Christian Sunday school many years, and only a week ago she and her cousin were present in the young people's class.

She was a devoted daughter, sister, and a true friend. It is sad that such a promising young life should be snuffed out and the hopes of those who knew and loved her should be shattered by death, for she gave promise of a long, happy, useful life in her chosen profession and in her devotion to her loved ones. The memory of her acts and kindness and words of sympathy will always be treasured.

She leaves to mourn her untimely departure, an aged grandmother, her mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Brown, two sisters, Mrs. Dora Harlan and Mrs. Ola Finley, two half brothers, James and Raymond Brown, several aunts and uncles, three nieces and a nephew and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held in the Elk Falls Christian church Sunday, August 13th, at 2:00 p.m., Newton Hill giving a brief address. Music was furnished by Mesdames Beulah Ransom and Grace Morton with Lois Burnett at the piano. There were many beautiful floral attributes. The active pallbearers were Francis Maxwell, Roy Olsen, Paul Morton, Roy Henderson, Ted Frauner, Lester Wicker. Honorary pall bearers wereseven nurses from Newton hospital at Winfield. Burial in the family lot in Elk Falls cemetery.

MR. WILLIAM L. SPRAGUE

William Lloyd Sprague, age 89, of Caney, Kan., passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Funeral services were held Friday, May 24, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Caney. Burial was in the Elk Falls Cemetery at Elk Falls. The family suggests memorial contributions to the United Methodist Church, 114 N. High , Caney, KS 67333.

Mr. Sprague was born March 24, 1913 near St. John, Kan., to James Samuel and Elizabeth Irene (Dewey) Sprague. He lived in Seward, Kan. until 1925, when he moved to Elk Falls and graduated form Elk Falls High School in 1932. Lloyd married Edith May Royse on February 28, 1936 in Fredonia, Kan. He worked as a service manager at the Chevrolet garages in Sedan and Caney from 1938 until he retired and had received honors from Chevrolet 20 years in a row.

Lloyd was made a master Mason in Sedan in 1955. He was Worshipful Master in 1959 in Sedan and in Caney in 1973, Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star chapters in both Sedan and Caney, Deputy Grand Master of the 25th District of Masons in 1975 and 1976, Grand Guard in 1981, Kansas Outstanding Mason in 1979, Proficiency Examiner of District 20 for the Order of the Eastern Star in 1989-1990, Secretary of the Sedan Lodge, Treasurer of the Caney Lodge for many years, member of the Caney Masonic Lodge and the Vesper Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a life member of the Scottish Rite.

Lloyd was mayor of Caney from 1973-1975 and a member of the city council from 1975-1977 and 1979-1983. He was a faithful member of the Caney Methodist Church and served on their board for many years. Lloyd was a member of the Caney Lions Club and a past president. His favorite past time was playing golf at the Caney Golf Club, where he had three hole-in-ones, two within nine days.

Preceding him in death was his twin brother, James Floyd, sisters, Mabel Grace and Nellie Viola, and a brother, Wesley Ray.

Surviving family members include his wife of 66 years, Edith, of Shawnee, Kan., son, Bill Sprague, of Louisburg, Kan., daughter, Kathie, of Kansas City, Mo., granddaughters, Pam White, of Shawnee, Kan., Sandra Alderman, of Pottsville, Pa., Kristine Branson, of Manhattan, Kan., grandsons, Brad Sprague, of Shawnee, Kan., Scott Musgrave. of Shawnee, Kan., and ten great grandchildren.

MRS. STELLA M. SPRICK

Mrs. Stella M. Sprick, 74, of Elk Falls, Kansas, and a former resident of Prairie View, Kansas, died at 2:48 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 1984, at Mercy Hospital, where she had been a patient since October 12th.

She was born March 3, 1910 in Densmore, Kansas, the daughter of Arthur Stockham and May (Satterley)Stockham. She attended rural schools in the Densmore, Kansas area.

She was united in marriage to Tom Sprick and the couple made their home in rural Prairie View, Kansas. Mr. Sprick preceded his wife in death. She moved to Elk Falls about two months ago to make her home with her son, Virgil.

She was a member. of the Reformed Church and the Sunshine EHU, both of Prairie View, Kansas.

Survivors include two sons, Virgil of Elk Falls, Kansas, and Roger of Prairie View, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 31, 1984, at 2:00 p.m. at Priarie View Reformed Church in Prairie View, Kansas, through the Enfield Funeral Home in Norton, Kansas. Local arrangements were handled through the Potts Chapel-Schmidt Funeral Service. Interment was in the Prairie View Cemetery.

The family has suggested memorial remembrances to the Elk Falls United Methodist Church and memorials may be sent to Reverend John Vaughan, Elk Falls United Methodist Church, Elk Falls, Kansas.

MRS. DOROTHY J. STARR

Dorothy Jeane Polson Starr died January 6, 1995 at the age of 76. She was born in Wellington on October 6, 1918 to I.V. and Eva Polson She went through school in Moline, where she graduated.

She married Donald B. Starr on January 9, 1943. She died in Longview, TX. where they lived for many years. She was buried there beside her husband.

She is survived by two sons, James and Robert, their wives, Barbara and Debbie, two grandsons Eric and Alan, two brothers Hugh Polson of Wichita, and Dr. Richard Polson of Bakersfield, CA., a sister Frances Arbuckle of Peru and many friends.


She had 32,000 hours as a volunteer at the Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview over a period of thirty years.

MR. HOWARD V. STAUFFER

SEDAN, Kan. - Howard Vernon “Grinny” Stauffer, 83, of Sedan, Kan., died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Overland Park Medical Center in Overland Park, Kan.

He was born Oct. 6, 1920 at Grenola, Kan. to Edward J. and Bertha (Schul) Stauffer. He grew up in the Grenola area and attended Grenola schools.

On Sept. 29, 1942, he married Bertha Bonita Campbell at Winfield, Kan. Shortly after their marriage, he entered the U.S. Army, serving during WW II in North Africa, Italy and France for over three years. Following his discharge, they moved to Wichita, where he began his career as a sales representative for welding supply companies. In 1959, they moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where he continued his career advancing to regional sales manager and vice president. While in Sioux City, he invented and patented an inert gas flow control used in tig and mig welding. Mrs. Stauffer preceded him in death on Jan. 2, 1992. Mr. Stauffer continued working until retiring in 1993.

On March 14, 1994, he married Eileen Focht of Sedan at Miami, Okla. Following their marriage, they made their home in Sedan.

Mr. Stauffer was a member of the Sedan First United Methodist Church, the American Welding Society, founder of the Sioux City Chapter of the American Welding Society, Sedan V.F.W. Post 112, Sedan Lions Club and the Sedan Country Club. He enjoyed golf and excelled at softball when he was young. On April 4, 1992, he was inducted into the Kansas Amateur Softball Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen, of the home in Sedan, two sons, Gregory Stauffer, St. Louis, Mo. and Gary Stauffer, Overland Park, Kan.; two stepsons, Greg Cude’, Tulsa, Okla. and Gary Cude’, Sedan, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Cherie Cude’, Frederickburg, Texas and Lori Cude’, Wichita, Kan.; his stepmother, Pearl Stauffer, Moline, Kan.; one sister, Darlene Baker, Houston, Texas; five grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, three greatgrandchildren.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in the First United Methodist Church in Sedan, with Rev. Jerry Bever officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery at Winfield.

December 1995

MR, HERBERT E, STEHR

Herbert E. Stehr passed away Thursday, December 15, 1994 at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, KS. He was 83 years of age. Herb, as he was known to his friends, was born on November 19, 1911 at Lehr, North Dakota to Gottlieb and Dorothy (Kanenwischer) Stehr. He attended school and grew to manhood in North Dakota.

On May 8, 1941 he entered the United States Army and served in the Pacific Theater with the Army Engineers, during World War II. After hs discharge on November 10, 1945, Herb owned and operated a local trucking business in Edgeley, ND for many years.

In 1960, Herb began traveling as a custom grain harvester and lived in several locations throughout the central United States. In 1985, Herb moved to Howard, KS. to be near friends and remained a resident of Howard until his death.

He is survived by three brothers, Oscar Stehr of Minot, ND., Elmer Stehr of Cannon Falls, MN., and Robert Stehr of Edgeley, ND., a sister Ella Schuler of Bismarck, ND., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother William and a sister Anna.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 20, 1994 at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard with Rev. Robin Haines of the Flint Hills Assembly of God officiating. Mrs. Helen Vinette was the organist with Alan Rousselle singing “Rock of Ages” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” Interment will be held in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND. at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 29, 1994. Memorials have been established with the Elk County Ambulance Service and the Benson Museum of Howard. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist church for Mrs. Clara Steward, who died Monday morning at her home. The Rev. Chester Eshbaugh was the officiating minister and interment was in the Cedar Vale Cemetery with the Watt Funeral Home, Moline, in charge.

Survivors are her husband Clarence, of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Lela Brown of Wellington; Mrs. Lucille Metcalf, Decatur, Illinois, and Mrs. Betty McKimens, Sedan; three sisters, Mrs. Ethel Brooks, Shidler, Oklahoma; Mrs. Lola Bacca, Cathedral City, California, and Mrs. Helen Brough, Colorado Springs, Colorado; two brothers, Dee Huntington, Elk Falls and Don Huntington, Moline; seven grandchildren and four great grand children.

MRS. BERNIECE M. STEWART

Berniece Myrtle Stewart, 82, of Moline, Kansas, died Monday, January 10, 1994, at the Sedan City Hospital.

She was born July 27, 1911, in Cedar Vale, Kansas, to George Lincoln and Maude Fonda (Burdette) Keplinger. She was a homemaker and a retired school teacher. She xas also a member of the Belknap community Church, the Belknap EHU, Willing Workers Club and the Senior Citizens.

On April 25, 1935, in Howard, she and William Harold Stewart were united in marriage. He survives at the home. Also surviving are two sons, Gene and William, both of Moline; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, January 13, 1994, at 2:00 p.m. in the Graves-Baird Funeral Chapel, Sedan, Kansas. Interment was in the Belknap Cemetery, rural Moline, Kansas. Rev. Wally Racker officiated. Graves-Baird Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established in her name with the Belknap Community Center.

MRS. ELSIE B. STEWART

Elsie Beatrice Stewart passed away Friday, January 14, 1994 at the Howard Twilight Manor Nursing Home. She was 86 years of age. Elsie was born on February 11, 1907 at Webb City, MO to James and Nellie (Workman) Huffman. She attended school and grew to womanhood in Missouri. As a young woman, Elsie worked as a “Harvey House Girl” for a short time.

On December 10, 1926, she married George Wade Stewart at Eureka, KS. He preceded her in death in 1967. Elsie lived in Towanda, Beaumont, Latham, and Howard during her lifetime. She devoted her life to caring for her family.

She is survived by a son, George of Billings, MT, a daughter, Sally Gorman of Howard, four grandchildren; Teresa Gorman of Howard, Greg Gorman and his wife Amy of Ft. Gibson, OK, Lori Stewart and Brad Stewart, and his wife Judy, all of Billings, MT, and three great-grandchildren; Lindsay and Makenzie Gorman of Ft. Gibson, OK, and Tyler Stewart of Billings, MT. Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, and four sisters.

Memorial services were held Sunday, January 16 at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard with Rev. Robin Haines of the Flint Hills Church of God officiating. Mrs. Helen Vinette was the organist with Mrs. Connie Russell singing “Swing Low Sweet Chariot.” A memorial has been established with the Howard Twilight Manor. MRS. IDA M. STILES

Ida May Stiles passed away Thursday, October 3, 1996, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline. She was 95 years of age. Ida was born August 17, 1901 at El Dorado Springs, MO. to Isiah and Jessie May (Axtell) Watkins.

She moved with her family to Rooks County Kansas coming to Grenola in 1910. She attended Elk County Elementary School.

On March 10, 1920 she married Byron Stiles at her parents farm home at Grenola, KS. She was a homemaker and made her home at Grenola until the time of her death.

Ida was a longtime member of the Grenola Christian Church and the Quilting Club of Grenola.

Ida was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son Byron Dale, and one brother. She is survived by two sisters, Theresa Keplinger and Mary H. Stiles, both of Grenola, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 7, 1996 at the Grenola Christian with Rev. Wallace Wartick officiating. A memorial has been established with the Grenola Christian Church or the Elk Manor Nursing Home of Moline.

MR. LYAL M. STILES

Lyal Merle Stiles passed away Wednesday, November 23, 1994 at Mercy Hospital in Independence. He was 79 years of age. Merle, as he was known to his friends, was born on January 22, 1915 in Moline to Guy Leonard and Linnie Gertrude (Goodwin) Stiles. He grew to manhood in the Elk Falls community and graduated from Elk Falls High School in 1933.

In June 11, 1938 he married Alaine Jessie McCall, Merle and Alaine owned a grocery store in Beaumont where their daughter Jessie was born. In 1940, they moved to Elk Falls where they made their home throughout their lives. Alaine preceded him in death.

Merle served in the United State Army during World War II and remained a member of the Army Reserve for more than 20 years. In 1951, he became the postmaster at Elk Falls and continued in that office until his retirement in 1981.

On April 19, 1986 be married Barbara Ann (Camp) Duncan at Howard and they made their home in Elk Falls until his death.

He was a member of the Moline Christian Church, the Gideons International, Meridian Lodge #126 A.F.& A.M. and Ladonia Chapter #243 Order Of The Eastern Star both of Elk Falls, and the American Legion Post #388 of Moline. Merle was also a long time member of the Elk Falls Cemetery board, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Army Reserve Officer’s Association.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, his daughter Jessie Bahr of Severy, a step daughter Mary Ann Hargrove of Moline, a half brother Eldon Peck of Marionville, MO., five grandchildren, five step grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Alaine, his parents and three brothers.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 27, 1994 at the Moline Christian Church in Moline with Rev. Jim Carter and Rev. Tony Pameticky officiating. Mrs. Wanda Mills was the organist with Mrs. Roylynn Pameticky singing “One Day” and “How Great Thou Art.” The casket bearers were Chris Clyde, Gene Cone, Delbert Lord, Jim McDonald, Ray Sumner and Ira Thomas. Masonic services were conducted by Meridian Lodge #126, A.F.& A.M. of Elk Falls. Military graveside services were conducted by American Legion Post #388 of Moline at the Elk Falls Cemetery in Elk Falls.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

F. E. Stone, Garden City, died Saturday, December 23. Funeral services were held Wednesday in that city. Mr. Stone was a former Howard resident. He was a brother of Mrs. Daisy Moore of this city.

William A. Stonebraker, a prosperous farmer of Paw Paw township, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1911, and was buried at Grace Lawn Cemetery, Howard, Sunday forenoon, after brief funeral services at the home conducted by Rev. Cullison.

Mr. Stonebraker was born in Crawfordville, Montgomery county, Indiana, July 22, 1869. He was married to Miss Edna Rutherford in this county, December 25, 1894, and leaves the widow and seven children, three sons and four daughters to mourn his death. Mr. Stonebraker was a respected citizen of his community and his death is sincerely regretted by all.

James Alexander Street, son of James and Jane Street, was born near Zanesville, Ohio, July 26, 1845 and departed this life at his home one mile west of Moline, Kansas, January 15, 1930, aged 84 years, 5 months, and 19 days.

At an early age he moved with his parents to Clark county, Illinois. Here he grew to manhood and enlisted in the Union Army in July 1863, serving in the 115th, Indiana, and 152nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, until the close of the Civil War.

He was married to Amanda Smith March 16, 1871, in Cumberland county, Illinois. To this union were born seven, three of them having preceded their father in death. Daniel, Fred, and Frank of Moline and Walter of Howard, with their mother and three grandchildren are left to mourn his loss; he also leaves three brothers, W. T. Street of Tuplett, Missouri; J. L. Street of Wichita; and C. H. Street of Dodge City, Kansas and two sisters, Mrs. Melissa Bennett, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Mrs. S. H. Taggert of Almyra, Arkansas.

In March 1881, he moved with his family to Pottawatomie county, later to Elk county, October 1, 1882, settling seven miles northwest of Moline, where he resided for thirty-seven years, later moving to a home with their two sons, Dan and Fred, on a farm one mile west of Moline, where he passed away.

When a young man he united with the Presbyterian church. He was a kind husband and father, a loyal citizen and neighbor.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Moline, Friday, January 17, at 1:30 p.m., conducted by Mrs. Belle Reid Yates of Grenola, assisted by Rev. Dewey of The Moline Methodist church and the body taken to Howard for burial, where the services were in charge of the Carter-Rader Post, American Legion. (Poem Omitted)

OBITUARY -- Street
Walter Street, son of James A. and Amanda Smith Street, was born at Howard, Kansas, on October 18, 1885, and passed away on May 25, 1955, at St. Joseph hospital at Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 69 years, 7 months, and 7 days. He spent his entire life within one-half mile of his birth place, moving to his present home at the time of his marriage to Martha M. Frahm in the Lutheran church at Winfield, Kansas, on December 25, 1907. To this union were born four children, three sons and one daughter. One son, Vernon, passed away on July 24, 1922, at the age of three years. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers and two sisters. The one brother, Dan, passed away on February 14, 1955.

He leaves to mourn his passing his faithful wife, Martha, of the home; his sons, James, of Moline and Walter Eugene, of Wichita; his daughter, Vera Smith, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; his grandchildren, Samantha Smith, Ronald and Sue Ellen Street and Ricky Street; two brothers, Fred and Frank Street, of Moline; two daughters-in-law, Fay and Nona Mae Street; one sister-in-law, Ruby Street, of Moline, Kansas, several cousins, and a host of friends.

He spent his entire life as a farmer and stockman. He was a loyal citizen, a good neighbor and always ready to help when needed. A faithful husband and a loving father, he will be greatly missed by his loved ones and friends. He had been in very poor health for more than four year and had suffered greatly with little complaint.

Funeral services were held at the Moon Chapel, Saturday, May 28th, at 2:30 p.m. Officiating was the Rev. Don Basham of the Christian church. Interment was in the Grace Lawn cemetery.

MRS. VIVIAN M. STORY

LONGTON — Vivian Marie Story, 87, formerly of Longton, died Tuesday at the Elk Manor nursing home in Moilne.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Longton Cemetery in Longton with the Rev. Ted Davis officiating. Graves-Baird Funeral Home of Sedan is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial in her name has been established with the Elk Manor nursing home.

Mrs. Story was born on Sept. 13, 1909, in Adair, Okla., to Oscar Dayton and Cordella Mae (Hemphill) Clark.

She married Loyd Jessie Story on Feb. 26, 1938, in Butler, Mo. He died in 1982.

She was a member of the Longton Baptist Church.


1992 ?

MR. LARRY P. STRONG

Services for Larry P. Stong, 39, of Houston, TX., was Saturday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Cherryvale, with the Rev. Wayne Hett, pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Elk City under the direction of Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Larry Stong Memorial Fund at Bank Fund, Bank One, Copperfield Branch, 15840 FH 529, Houston, TX., 77095.

Mr. Stong died Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston of complications following open heart surgery. He suffered from Marfan’s syndrome, a congenital disease of the heart and connective tissue.

He was born July 16, 1953, in Independence, to Ross and Mary (Ballenger) Stong. He was narried to Bea Dishman.

Mr. Strong attended Cherryvale Schools, Independence Community College where he played on the basketball team, and Emporia State University. He was employed as safety director for Rawson-Koenig Inc. of Houston.

He was a member of the First Christian Church of West Houston. Survivors include the wife of the home, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Stong, Cherryvale; two sisters, Pat McDiarmid and Judy Jewers, both of Independence; two brothers, K.R. Strong of Grenola, and Russell of TX.

Casket bearers for the service were Ken Martell, Billy Walker, Frank Stong, Tommy Blaes, Wade Webber, John Smith, and Bruce Strickland.


September 1994

MR. ROSS E. STUKEY

Ross E. Stukey, 85, died September 7, 1994 at the St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, MO.

Mr. Stukey was born March 23, 1909, at Crestline, KS. He moved to Moline as a child and graduated from high school there. He had lived in Carl Junction the past 63 years. He worked in the hardware and implement business for many years. He delivered motor homes for Coon’s Motor Homes Manufacturing Co., Oswego, KS. for 10 years. He was a former fire chief in Carl Junction.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Carl Junction. He was a charter member and past president of the Carl Junction Lions Club. He was active in the Senior Citizens Club, served on the Carl Junction Special Road District board for many years.

He married Iris Sandy on January 26, 1941, at St. Petersburg, FL., she survives.

Additional survivors include a daughter Janine Albertini of Chetopa, a brother Carl Stukey of Paradise, CA., and two grandchildren.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 10, 1994 at the First Baptist Church in Carl Junction. The Rev. Ted Wilkins and the Rev. Bob Simon officiating. Burial was in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin.

Memorial are the Carl Junction Senior Citizens Club and First Baptist Church building fund, contributions can be mailed to the funeral home. Funeral arrangements were made with Simpson Funeral Home of Carl Junction.


April 1991

MASTER SAMUEL J. STULTS

Samuel Joseph Stults, 4, of Grenola died of accidental asphyxiation Tuesday, April 16, 1991, at Burden. He was born March 12, 1987.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, at the United Methodist Church at Valley Center. He was laid to rest beside his great-grandmother at the Bentley Cemetery.

Sam-Sam, The Wild Man, as he was affectionately known by family and friends, is survived by his mother, Kimberly and his brother, Michael Lee James, both of the home; grandparents, Beverly Stults and Glenn Stults, both of Wichita; many aunts and uncles and 203 cousins.

The family requests memorials be given to the Grenola Elementary School. Arrangements were by Nutter Mortuary, Valley Center.


Elk County Citizen - October 28, 1903

MRS. MINERVA STUMP - Submitted by L. Morgan

Minerva Stump
Mrs. Minerva Stump was born in Monroe county, Indiana, Feb. 28th, 1828 and died at the home of her son-in-law, James Goodwin, near Howard, Kansas, Oct. 21st 1903, aged 75 years, 7 months and 22 days. Her husband and two sons and daughter were present at the funeral. The writer did not learn further particulars of their family history. Mrs. Stump united with the Christian Church in the year 1845. She lived a life of true devotion as a faithful Christian, wife and mother.

She suffered for a few weeks, but passed away peacefully. The funeral service took place Thursday morning, conducted by Elder N. Hill of Elk Falls. Burial took place in Moline cemetery. There was a large gathering of friends at the funeral and quite a number accompanied the remains to their last earthly resting place. (Poem omitted)
