MR. SOLOMAN NAVE - Submitted by L. Morgan
SOLOMON NAVE
Solomon Nave, father of Mesdames O. Baumgartle, R.M. Gilbreth, T. Shadrick and Wesley Nave, was born in Tennessee. He moved to Indiana, then to Kentucky, where he was married to Miss Manda Flack, in his early manhood he united with the M.E. church. He removed to Kansas in 1871, and settled near Indian Creek in Howard county where he has lived ever since.
Mr. Nave, as far we are able to learn, lived a straightforward, honest life, and that his word was good for anything he said.
The people of Indian Creek are sorry to lose Mr. Nave, and sympathize with the children in the loss of a father. He died March 6, 1892.
Mr. Nave was 65 years old. Mrs. Nave preceded him a year ago to the better world.

MR. MARTIN H. NEAL - Submitted by L. Morgan
Martin Hezekiah Neal, son of William and Ellen Neal, was born near Jerico Springs, Missouri, February 17, 1884 and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elbert Jones, on January 1, 1943, age m 58 years, 10 months, and 14 days.
He was united in marriage to Willa Rose, February 18, 1908, at Lamar, Missouri. To this union one daughter was born.
He came with his family to Elk county in November 1920 and has made his home in this county since then.
He was converted and united with the Baptist church of Bethlehem, Missouri and remained faithful to the end.
“Hez” as he was known to all, lost his health three years ago. He bore his affliction with patience and never complained of his suffering. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a true friend and loved by all who knew him. He was always ready and willing to help others in time of need.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, Willa, one daughter, Mrs. Velma Jones of Howard, Kansas, four grandchildren, Billy, Winona, Phyllis, and Rex Jones of Howard, three brothers, John of Springfield, Colorado; Albert, and Frank both of Cannon City, Colorado; three sisters, Retta Shoemaker, Booker, Texas; Delia Headloe, Greenfield, Missouri; and Oda Wolfe, Springfield, Colorado. Also a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Nez Neal were held at the Moon Funeral Home on Sunday, January 3, 1943 at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Merrit W. Faulkner. Pall bearers were Albert Criger, Roy Miller, Sam Baughman, Oscar Highsmith, Walter Baughman, and Rube Criger. Interment was in Grace Lawn cemetery, Howard.
MRS. MARTHA NELSON - Submitted by L. Morgan
Died- In Howard, Kansas on Tuesday, October 24th, 1882 of pulmonary consumption, Mrs. Martha Nelson, wife of W. H. Nelson and daughter of Jacob Kobel of Camp Point, Illinois. The funeral services were held at M.E. church, Wednesday, October 25th, at 2 p.m. The father of the deceased arrived in Howard only a few hours after she had breathed her last. Mrs. Nelson was about 28 years old and leaves a husband, but no children to mourn her early death.
MR. LLOYD K. NETTLES
Lloyd Keith "Ted" Nettles, age 76, a resident of Moline, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2008 at the Sedan City Hospital in Sedan.
Ted was born on Feb. 19, 1932 in Lorenzo, Texas the son of Lloyd Leslie and Florence Loraine (Carter) Nettles.
After graduating high school Ted worked on the family cotton farm near Lorenzo. After many years of growing cotton, Ted went to work as a truck driver in the Texas oil fields.
On May 17, 2001 Ted was united in marriage to Eda C. Brust-Collier in Newkirk, Okla. He was a member of the Moline Christian Church. He was also a member of the Masons and Shriners back in Texas. Ted was a 16 year heart transplant survivor.
Ted is survived by his wife Eda Nettles of Moline, two sons; Steve Nettles and his wife Kita of Johnson City, Texas and Randy Nettles and his wife Tanya of Amarillo, Texas, one daughter-in-law Brenda Nettles, three sisters; Francis Danford of Lewisville, Texas, Edith Coulter and her husband Earl of Lorenzo, Texas, and Carol Cobb of Ft. Worth, Texas, nine grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Ricky Nettles, on£ brother George "Skeets" Nettles, one sister Bobbie Hardin, and one brother-in-law Charlie Danford. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008 at the Moline Christian Church with Pastor Stan Rumbaugh officiating. Interment was at the Moline Cemetery.

MRS. LEONA B. NEUBECKER - Submitted by Kyle Condon
Leona Blanche Neubecker, 79, of Grenola, died Nov. 13, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield. Born Jan. 21, 1911 in Severy, she was the daughter of Walter and Alma (Yarbrough) Condon. She was a retired telephone operator and homemaker.
On June 13, 1929, she married John H. Woods, who died in 1952. She married Dale Neubecker May 24, 1959 in Miami, Oklahoma.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Greenlawn Cemtery at Grenola with the Rev. Wallace Wartick officiating.
Watt Funeral Home of Moline is in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.
MRS. SADIE M. NEVITT
Sadie M. Nevitt, 92, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in St. Francis Medical Center in Topeka, Kan.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003 in the United Methodist Church in Osage City., Rev. Francis Stockton conducted the services. Graveside services were held at the Fairview Cemetery east of Mildred, Kan.
She was born Jan. 21, 1911, near Sedan in Chautauqua County to David A. and Martha Marie (Haines) Carter. She graduated from Moline High School.
Mrs. Nevitt was elected county treasurer of Elk County and served in that office from 1950 to 1954. She then was elected Elk County Clerk from 1955 to 1963. She was also deputy county clerk of Greenwood County for two years. She then joined the General Electric Company in the finance department until she retired in 1973.
Mrs. Nevitt was a member of the United Methodist Church in Osage City. She was active in the Rebekah Lodge, the Business and Professional Women’s Club and a former president of the Kansas County Clerk Association.
She moved to Osage City in 1989 from Topeka. She had spent her early years in Chautauqua and Elk counties.
She married Clyde Hebb on Sept. 24m 1930. He preceded’her in death. She later married Urless D. “Babe” Nevitt on June 15, 1974. He preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 1989.
Survivors include five sisters, Alma Ross, Osage City, Barbara Eisenbach, Osage City, Ruth Jellison, Sedan, Beulah Walker, Butler, Mo. and Bessie Eaton, Borger, Texas. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ronald Carter, Frank Carter and George Carter and three sisters, Nellie Fisher,. Dorene Smith and Alene Radcliff. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church sent in ‘care of Crable VanArsdale Funeral Chapel, 107 N. Sixth, Osage City, KS 66523.
MRS. LUCY P. NEWTON
Lucy Peggy Newton, 83, of El Dorado, formerly of Elk City, died Tuesday morning at her home.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Knighton of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Friday. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
Casketbearers will be Bill Wiltfong, Max Hinthorn, Kenneth Pittman, Bob Daniels, Chipper Marquardt and David Wiltfong. Honorary bearers will be Dennis and David Newton.
Mrs. Newton was born on Oct. 18, 1911, in Elk County to James and Josephine (Krider) Wiltfong.
She was a member of the Fairview Ladies Club in Elk City.
She married John G. Newton on July 30, 1929, in Independence.He died in 1987.
She is survived by a son, Donald Newton, El Dorado; a brother, Bob Wiltfong, Cherryvale; four sisters, Addle Mae Weston and Opal Weyand, both of Independence, Pat Long, Kerman, Calif., and Loretta Tombderberlin, Wichita; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
MR. EPHRIAM H. NICHOLS - Submitted by L. Morgan
OBITUARY - EPHRIAM H. NICHOLS
Ephriam H. Nichols was born in Clark county, Illinois June 10, 1837 and died in St. Louis, Mo., March 30, 1904, age 66 years, 9 months and 20 days.
He enlisted as a soldier in the civil war and served three years in the Second Illinois heavy artillery. He was married to Miss Margaret Elbe in 1864, to this union were born five daughters of whom four with their mother live to mourn the loss of a kind father and husband.
Soon after his discharge from army service he attended school at Bloomington and prepared himself for teaching, which profession he followed for a few years in Illinois and later in Kansas.
He came to Kansas in 1867 and to Elk county in 1871 residing for many years in Elk Falls. He taught in the public schools of Howard and elsewhere in the county, but later on he began contracting as a stone mason and all over Elk county there are enduring monuments to his skill and fidelity in erecting piers, walls and other stone work.
For many years he and his wife were connected with the M. E. church, but embraced the Christian Science faith.
Mr. Nichols was an Odd Fellow, a Mason, and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic but allowed his membership in these orders to lapse.
Mr. Nichols was highly respected throughout this country and many friends deeply sympathize with the stricken family.
His body was brought to Elk Falls for burial April 1st. Funeral according to the Christian Science rites took place at the Baptist church. A brief address by Elder Hill followed and then escorted by his old comrades, the last sad rites took place at the cemetery where his body lies until the last great trump shall sound. Soldier rest in peace.
MR. JIM NICHOLS
Jhnmic R. (Jim) Nichols age 78, a well known rancher and farmer of the Longlon/Elk City area passed away Monday, June 28, 2010 at the Lakewood Senior Living Center in Wichita.
Jim was born on Jan. 23, 1932 in Howard, the son of the late Clifford "Buck" and Lura (Shipman) Nichols.
Jim was a graduate of Howard High School On Aug. 19, 1956 in Longton, Jim married Sharon Foster. Jim and Sharon were married for 53 years. Sharon survives at her home in Wichita.
Jim took great pride in his family, and especially his grandchildren. Jim enjoyed working with his cattle and farming, he also was very active in the, community. Jim was a past president of the Board of Directors for the Longton United Methodist Church, 4-H member and leader for many years, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Elk County A.S.C.S., and a 27 year board member of the Elk Valley School System.
Jim was acting Post Master of Longton for two years, managed the Longton Co-op for 17 years, and in his spare time he enjoyed coaching and supporting the Longton Ball Association.
Jim is survived by his wife Sharon Nichols of Wichita; sons, Joe Nichols and wife Licia of Longton, Jimmie Nichols of Irving, Texas, Chris Nichols and wife Tonya of Rosehill Kan.; daughter, Fenny Nichols of Wichita; sisters, Lori O'Dell of Howard, Pat Riggs of Moline; six grandchildren: Caleb, Lydia, Dallis, Leevi and Britney Nichols; Taylor St. John.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Colleen Rush.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 3, 2010 at the Longton Elk Valley Gymnasium with burial following at the Longton Cemetery.

R. H. Nichols Dead
R. H. Nichols, one of the pioneers and the first lawyer in this county, died Saturday at Woodward, Oklahoma. He had moved from Woodward to Iola, Kansas, but had gone back to finish his law business in the March term of court at Woodward. Mrs. Nichols was with him at the time. He came to Elk County in 1869 and settled on a claim near Elk Falls. He was one of the founders of Elk Falls. He served in the civil war and was at one time state senator. He was an able lawyer and a brilliant orator.
MR. DAVID A. NIGH - Submitted by L. Morgan
David Alonzo Nigh, son of Charles M. and Rosa E. J. Nigh, was born January 1, 1894, in Union Center Township, Elk County, Kansas. He grew to manhood in this community and early in life became a member of the Baptist church of Howard. He was a studious and industrious boy, was a faithful attendant at school, and graduated from Howard High School. He enlisted in the U. S. Army for the World War, March 18, 1918, at Howard. Received his honorable discharge Dec. 13, 1918.
He was united in marriage with Miss Louisa Butt of Howard, Dec. 24, 1919 and to this union were born three children: Geneva Marie, age __(unreadable), David Elmer, age 22 months, and Bonnie Lucille, age 8 months.
He was bereft of a mother's love and care at an early age, and was reared by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Casey of Union Center. His grandfather departed this life in September 1923, but the aged grandmother, Mrs. Charles Casey, survives, and mourns his death with more than a mother's love and sorrow. David is survived by his faithful young wife and the three little children, but also by his aged grandmother, one brother, Norval C. Nigh of Wichita; two half brothers, Geo. F. of Union Center; Lewis of Redfield, Kas; one half-sister, Dorothy May of Redfield; his father and step-mother, C. M. Nigh of Redfield, besides uncles, niece and other relatives. One brother died in infancy.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church, Howard, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Hoopingarner of the M. E. Church delivered the discourse, Rev. Bayles, pastor of the Baptist church having charge of the services. Carter-Rader Post conrades conducted the burial services, and the attendance at both the church and cemetery was very large.
MRS. ELIZABETH O. NIGH
HOWARD- Elizabeth Olive Nigh, 93, of Winfield, formerly of Howard, died Friday at her son's home in Winfield.
Graveside services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Grace Lawn Cemetery, Howard, with Chaplain Norman Reeves of Hospice Care of Kansas, officiating.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time at the cemetery pavilion.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Kansas and can be mailed to Countryside Funeral Home, P.O. Box 247, Fredonia, KS 66736.
Services are under the direction of Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.
Mrs. Nigh was born May 22, 1914 in Biloxi, Miss., to willis and Ruth E. (Brand) Hendrix.
On Nov. 23, 1932, she married Millard Nigh, and he died in 2000.
She worked at home, helping raise cattle, pigs, and geese.
Survivors include a son, Tom Nigh, Winfield; a daughter, Donna Sutter, Wichita; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
REV. DOIS D. NIX
INDEPENDENCE - Rev. Dois D. Nix, 68, of Independence, Kan. died at 12:50 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at his home.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Independence, with Rev. Jim Blocher, Pastor and Rev. Jan Hayen of the First United Methodist Church of Lenexa, Kan. officiating. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.
The family has suggested memorial remembrances to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.
Dois Dean Nix was born Jan. 1, 1937 at Hinton, Qkla., the son of Vernon McLin and Maude Augusta (Winn) Nix. He attended elementary school in Moss Grove, Okla. and attended and graduated from Hinton High School. He attended Connors State Junior College in Warner, Okla. and graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla.
Rev. Nix served as pastor of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church near Hydro, Okla. from 1959-62, pastor of the Oney Baptist Church from 1962-64, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Anthony, Kan. from 1964-71 and the First Baptist Church in Sedan, Kan. from 1971 until his retirement in January 2001.
Following his retirement, he served as Chaplain of Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and served as pastor of the Sycamore United Methodist Church. In recent years, he served as interim pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church of Independence and the First Baptist Church of Howard, Kan.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence, served as president of the American Baptist Churches of the central region in the mid 1980’s and served on several boards of the American Baptist Churches of the United States. On Aug. 12, 1956, at the First Baptist Church of Hinton, Okla., he was united in marriage to Gloria June Carr. Mrs. Nix survives at the home.
Additional survivors include a son, Shannon Nix, Raleigh, NC, two daughters, Kelly Bever, Kokomo, Ind. and Erin Nix, Peny, Kan., four brothers, Glenn Nix, Tulsa, Okla., Garland Nix, Oklahoma City, Okla., Roy Nix, Grand Terrance, Calif. and Curtis Nix, Weatherford, Okla., two sisters, Elperna Mills, Binger, Okla. and Lois Schedler, Dallas, Texas and five grandchildren.
MR. ERNEST NIX - Submitted by L. Morgan
Ernest Nix was born November 18, 1887, in Elk county, Kansas, and passed away April 23, 1966, at his home, following a lengthy illness. He grew up and went to school in the Indian Creek district.
He was united in marriage to Lottie Ferguson, September 24, 1913 at Howard, Kansas.
He leaves his wife, Lottie, of the home; one daughter, Cleo Fay Boyle of Wichita, Kansas; a grandson, Tony Boyle, Wichita, Kansas; a brother, George of Howard; a sister, Mrs. Lora Richardson of Severy, Kansas and many other relatives and friends. An infant son and daughter preceded him in death.
Ern lived all his life in this community, where he was engaged in the trucking business for many years.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 26, at 2:00 p.m. in the Spurrier-Watt chapel. James Sorenson of the Howard Christian church officiating. Music was furnished by Louise Morgan, Virginia Denton and Margaret Cummins. (Names of casket bearers have been omitted) Graveside services and burial were in Grace Lawn cemetery, Howard, Kansas.

OBITUARY -- Elza Nordyke
Elza Kahler Nordyke was born January 31, 1840 and died at Howard, Kansas on March 4, 1931, being 91 years, 1 month, and 4 days old.
When just a child she moved with her parents from Ohio to Monticello, Indiana, where she spent most her life. She was married to Israel Nordyke April 9, 1863. To this union was born one son, John Paris Nordyke, who passed away October 3, 1923. Her husband preceded her in death March 17, 1904.
She joined the Methodist church at the early age of 10 years. At the death of her son, she came with her step-daughter, Mrs. W. R. Dunkelberger to make her home with them at Howard. She is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Verla Paris of Brooklyn, New York and Mrs. Mae Blue of Star City, Indiana and a nephew Earl Blue of Shelton, Illinois and her step-daughter, Mrs. W. R. Dunkelberger of Howard, Kansas.
Short funeral services were held at the Dunkelberger home in Howard, Kansas, Friday morning at 8:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. A. E. Griggs, pastor of the Howard Presbyterian church and the remains were taken to the old homw at Monticello, Indiana for burial, accompanied by W. R. Dunkelberger.
MISS ELFIA A.NORMAN
Elfia Agnas Norman was born at Hamilton, Kansas, September 18, 1886 and departed this life July 12, 1934 at a hospital in Wichita, age 47 years, 10 months and 6 days.
She received her education in the common schools of Elk and Greenwood counties and at the Kansas State Normal of Emporia. She was one of Elk county's successful teachers, having taught here for 10 years, then went to Oregon where she taught for 5 years, coming back to Kansas in 1917 to help care for her mother, who was very poorly.
After her mother's death in 1919 she went to Wichita, where she made her home.
She leaves to mourn her departure her father Joe E Norman, one sister, Mrs. Chas. Ferry of Howard, one brother, Russell Norman of Piedmont and one brother Harvey Norman of Wasco, California; four nieces and four nephews, other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held Friday at the Methodist church at 3 p.m., conducted by Rev. G.. R. Lawellin. Misses Florine Wade and Phyllis Endicott sang three numbers accompanied by Mrs. Noel Mullendore. The burial was in the Moline cemetery.
MRS. LILLIAN R. NORMAN
Lillian Ross Norman, daughter of Archie Ross and Rebecca Nealey Ross, was born August 8, 1924 in Washington County, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and departed this life April 5, 1979 at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.
On June 15, 1950, she was united in marriage to Floyd Norman of Piedmont, Kansas and all their married life was spent on their farm near Piedmont.
She is survived by her husband Floyd of the home, a son, Kenneth Brewer and wife Betty of Wichita, Kansas; two daughters, Rebecca Lynn and Brenda Louise Brewer of Wichita, Kansas, her mother, Rebecca Ross of Sacramento, Calif., four brothers, Dwight Combs, of Grove, Oklahoma, Guy Ross of Sacramento, Calif., Dee Albert Ross, ot Albuquerque, N.M., Glen Ross of Hemet, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Mary Peters, Tacna, Az., and many nephews, nieces. She was preceded in death by her father, Archie Ross. Lillian was a member of the Southern Baptist Church.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she was a friend to everyone. Her cheery greeting and happy smile will be cherished by her loving relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 9, 1979 at the Forsberg Funeral Home in Severy, Kansas. Rev. Marty McCord of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church was the officiating clergyman. Burial was in Piedmont Cemetery..
