SSGT. BRYANT W. MACKEY
A soldier from Eureka whose wife and three children reside in Howard died Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Mosul, Iraq. The U.S. Defense Department said Staff Sgt. Bryant W. Mackey, 30, died of wounds suffered when a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle. Mackey was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas.
Mackey's wife, Marie, two sons, Ryan and Koby, and a daughter, Stephanie, all live in Howard. Full military rites will be held for the serviceman on Friday, Feb. 29, at 10 a.m. in the Countryside Funeral Home of Fredonia with a military burial service following at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard.
He was a graduate of Hamilton High School in Hamilton, Kan. He enjoyed playing football in high school and also was a member of the wrestling team.
On April 21, 1997, Bryant was united in marriage to Marie Stapp at the United Methodist Church in Hamilton. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Independence.
Friends said he was always fun to be around and was a team-player who was dedicated to both his family and his country. They say he was well aware of the dangers of war but was proud to be a soldier. SSgt.Mackey joined the U.S. Army just before Sept. 11, 2001, and was on his second tour of duty in Iraq. The first time he was injured by gunfire, but his friends say that wasn't about to scare him away from serving his country.
In his spare time he enjoyed watching football especially his two favorite teams, the Washington Redskins and the Kansas State University Wildcats, he also enjoyed fishing, listening to music and watching funny movies, but most of all he loved spending time with his children Ryan, Koby, and Stephanie and all of his family.
Survivors, in addition to his wife and children, are his father, Vietnam veteran Carl Lynn and Pamela June Mackey of Fredonia; his mother, Karen and Ben Nelson of Eureka; five brothers, Carl Mackey of Wichita, Adam Stehm of Missouri, Travis Edwards of El Dorado, Justin Edwards of El Dorado and Jericho Cavely of Fredonia.
Also surviving are four sisters: Monica Mackey of Fredonia, Lanesa Polten of Texas, Sherry Hurlburt of El Dorado, and Tiffany Edwards of Fredonia. Also surviving are his grandparents, Carl and Vera Mackey of Dodge City, his mother-in-law, LaDonna Stapp of Howard, his father-in-law, John and Debbie Parkins of Wichita.
Arrangements are under the direction of Countryside Funeral Home, P.O. Box 247, 420 S. 20th St., Fredonia. Memorials are suggested to the Fredonia Library and may be left in care of the funeral home.
MR. RILEY MADISON
Riley Madison, 84, of Kingrnan died Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Riverside Hospital in Wichita.
Services were held Tuesday at 1:30 pm. at the funeral home in Kingman.
Riley and his wife, Minnie, lived east of Howard for a number of years. They were active workers in the Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, six brothers and two sisters. He is survived by three sisters, and locally by two cousins, Jennetta King of Moline and Carol Brinegar of Howard.
MRS. DOROTHY M. MARQUARDT
Dorothy M. Wiltfong Marquardt, of Parsons, died Saturday at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Darold Deterding of the Peace Lutheran Church of Andover officiating. Burial was in Oak Valley Cemetery.
Dorothy M. Marquardt was born on April 28, 1921, in rural Elk City, to James and Josie Krider Wiltfong. She attended Viola School in rural Oak Valley. She was married on July 27, 1939, to C. H. "Hank” Marquardt in Mansfield, Mo. He survives at the home.
She had lived in Parsons since 1946 and worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant near Parsons until she retired in 1981. Other survivors include one son, C.H. “Chip" Marquardt, Tonganoxie; one daughter; Gwen Hensley, Rose Hill; one brother, Robert E. Wiltfong, Caney; seven sisters, Janie Stark, Carroilton, Mo., Pegggy Newton, Elk City, Loretta Tomberlin, Wichita, Vera “Pat” Long, Kerman, Calif., Addie Weston and Opal Weyand, Independence, and Bea Wiltfong, Longton; and eight grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons; Gary Hensley, Raymond Hensley, Andrew Everhart, Daniel Bridwell, William Bolte, David Bennett, and Goran Hunjak. A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society and contributions may be left at the funeral home.
MR. WILLIAM E. MARQUARDT
William E. “Bill” Marquardt, 87, died Tuesday, July 16, 1996, at the Labette County Medical Center. He had been in failing health for several months.
He was born November 11, 1908 at Elm Dale, KS. a son of William H., and Rosalie E. (Piper) Marquardt. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Longton, KS., where he grew up and graduated from high school. In 1942, he moved to Parsons and worked at the Kansas Ordnance Plant for three years. He was employed as a custodian at the former Swift’s Poultry Plant for about 25 years before retiring in the early 1970’s.
He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Parsons. He enjoyed gardening and building yard swings.
He and Oletha G. Adams were married June 3, 1933 at Fredonia, KS. She survives of the home.
Other survivors included three sons, Billy D. Marquardt, Wayne Marquardt, and Paul Marquardt, all of Parsons; one daughter, Dolores Stiles of Thayer; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-three greatgrandchildren; two great-greatgrandchildren, and one brother, C.H. “Hank” Marquardt of Tulare, CA.
He was preceded in death by a son, Allen Marquardt. who died in 1983 a great-grandson; two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held Friday. July 19, 1996 at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Vicar Richard Andrus officiating. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons. Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Church.
MR. ROBERT L. MARRS
Robert Lee Marrs passed away Thursday, July 6, 1995 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Wichita. He was 84 years of age. Bob, as he was known, was born April 18, 1911 at Howard to William and Evelyn (Whitmore) Marrs. He attended Elk County schools and graduated from Howard High School in 1929.
Bob attended school and played football at Purdue University in Lafayette, IN. and the University of Kansas in Lawrence. In 1931 he returned to operate the family farm near Howard, until entering the United States Army during World War II.
On October 31 1942 he married Dorthy Leon Blizard in Texas and to this union was born a son, Robert. After the war, Bob returned to Elk County and continued to operate the family farm until his death. He enjoyed operating his farm, and especially working with his cattle.
Bob served as a 4-H leader for several years, and was past commander of Carter-Rader American Legion Post #149 at Howard. He also served for many years as township trustee of Howard Township, and was a long time member of the Howard United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife Dorthy of Howard, a son Robert Marrs of Cedar Rapids, IA., a sister Harriet Topliff of Esbon and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m., Monday, July 10, 1995 at the Howard United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Cooper officiating. Mrs. Betty Russell was the organist with the Howard United Methodist Church Choir singing “How Great Thou Art.” The casket bearers were Mike Bellar, Jerry Harrod, Gary Hebb, Wayne Keast, Robert Vinette, and Gene, Walter. Military graveside services were conducted by Carter-Rader Post #149 at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard. A memorial has been established with the Howard United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left at the funral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
MRS. ABELINA MARTIN Submitted by Stanton Baker
Mrs. Abelina Martin, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Baker, was born September 8, 1851, and] passed away January 2, 1929.
The body was brought to Moline Saturday by her son and daughter, a Bernerd Martin and Mrs. Mary Gantner of St. Louis, Missouri. Short funeral services were conducted by the Rev. 0. W. Dewey at the Karick Funeral Home and was tenderly laid to rest by the side of her two children who died in infancy.
She is survived by one daughter Mrs Mary Ganter, and three sons, John, Bernerd and Charley Martin of St Louis, Missouri; ten grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Ella Beck of Kelso, Washington, and Mrs. Olive Fern of Elk City, Oklahoma and a number of nieces and nephews.
The James Martin family were early settlers in this part of the country and lived on what is known as the Spease farm west of town.
MR. DALLAS M. MARTIN
SEDAN - Dallas M. Martin, 93, of Sedan, Kan. died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.
He was born Jan. 1, 1911, at Longton, Kan. to Jesse Orville and Clara Belle (Arnold) Martin. He grew up and attended rural schools in Chautauqua County.
In April 1941, he joined the U.S. Army serving during WWII, he was discharged in Oct. 1945. Following his discharge he returned to Sedan.
On June 16, 1960, he married Betty Jean Bruner at Sedan. Following their marriage, they continued to make their home in Sedan, where Mr. Martin was a painting contractor for many years. Mrs. Martin preceded him in death on May 8, 2000.
He was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include three sisters, Leona Gray, Cherry Valley, Calif., Ellen Peters, Norfolk, Neb., and Myrlyne McKellips, Sedan. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters.
Services were at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, with Rev. Harold Tucker officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard, Fort Riley, Kan.
Arrangements were under the direction of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan.
MR. RALPH F. MARTIN
Ralph Junior Martin passed away Sunday, April 21, 1996, at Douglass Medicalodge at Douglass, KS. He was 78 years of age. Ralph was born December 10, 1917 in Wichita, KS to Ralph B. and Bertha Opal (Barnett) Martin. Ralph was a retired Boeing aircraft worker and a US Army World War II veteran.
He is survived by three sons, Gary of Seattle, WA., Randy of Douglass, KS., and Ronald of Parsons, KS., two daughters, Bonnie Juaire of Howard, KS and Betty Ogle of Wichita, KS; two brothers, Warren of Ft. Dodge, KS and Elby of Seattle, WA; two sisters, Evelyn Albert and Donna De Graw of Augusta, KS; 14 grandchildren, and nine greatgrandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday, April 24, 1996 at the Hillside Funeral Home in Augusta with the Rev. Chuck Terrill officiating. Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery.
The funeral arrangements were made with the Hillside Funeral Home of Augusta.
MRS. MAGGIE J. MASON
Maggie Jane, daughter of John and Ida McLean, was born near Howard, Kansas, March 2, 1884, and departed this life November 10, 1967, at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 10 (lays.
She was united in marriage to James Arthur Mason on March 16, 1904, and to this union seven children were born. She was preceeded in Death by her husband on Novembr 28, 1949, and two sons, Clare and. Vernon.
She is survived by three sons, Virgil, Jean and Walter Mason, Wichita, Kansas; two daughters, Lorna Blankenship, Derby, Kansas, and Bonnie Lauffer, Severy, Kansas; three daughters-in-law; two sons-inlaw; 13 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; one brother, Walter McLean, Piedmont, Kansas; four sisfers, Anna McLean, Maude Smith and Bertha Hughes, Eureka, Kansas, and Pearl James, Tucson, Arizona, and a host of relatives and friends.
As a young girl she accepted Christ as her personal Saviour and her life was a testimony of her concern for following the teachings of His word. She was always concerned for the sick and afflicted in her community. She was ready at all times to give assistance and encouragement to those in sorrow.
Her literary talents were revealed in many letters written to her children, grandchildren and many friends. In her writings one could discern her deep understanding of mankind and also her great concern for all the many problems confronting mortal man. Her writings will he cherished by all. Her life was a constant testimony of her concern for her fellow man.
Funeral services were held at the Severy Baptist church. The Rev. Albert Eubanks, Howard. officiated. Burial was in Cresco cemetnry, Elk county. Forsberg Funeral Home of Severy was in charge of the services.
MRS. NORMA L. MASON
Norma Leone Mason passed away Wednesday, August 16, 1995, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline, KS. She was 92 years of age. Norma was born May 10, 1903 at Independence, KS to Spencer Kelm and Anna Josephine (Finney) Murphy. She attended Pleasant Hill rural school, near Moline, before moving with her family to Colorado. Norma attended school in Colorado and Oklahoma, then moved to Florida in 1926.
In the late 1920’s, Norma returned to the Moline area. On January 6, 1945, she married Marvin Albert Mason at Moline, KS. They owned and operated a farm near Moline until moving into town in the 1950’s. Norma worked many years as a linotype operator for Axtell Printing in Moline. Marvin preceded her in death in 1969.
She enjoyed working and spending time in her garden. Norma was skilled at making cherry pies, churning butter, and canning jellies. She loved to make crafts and spent many hours sewing. crocheting and doing needle work.
Norma volunteered to help at the Moline Friendship Meals for many years. She was a former member of many organizations at Moliue including the Grange and the Busy Bee Club and was a longtime member of the Moline Christian Church.
Norma is survived by her sister. Caryl Wesley of Ft. Worth, TX, her nieces, Nancy Boddie of Ft. Worth and Patricia Fay of Dallas, TX; her grandnieces Carolyn and Catherine Fay, and Melissa Boddie; her grandnephew Wesley and several cousins including Ella Mae Durbin of Moline.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 19 at the Moline Christian Church with Rev. Jim Carter officiating. Mrs. Leah Carter was the organist with Mrs. Evelyn Grover singing "The Lord is My Shepherd” and ”The Haven of Rest.” The casket bearers were Marable Bryan, Ronald Durbin, Ken Liebau. Don Murphy, Tom Patteson and Wade Patteson.
Interment as held in the Molmne Cemetery. Memorials have been established with the Elk Manor Nursing Home or the Moline Christian Church. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral at arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral of Howard.
MR. SAMUEL W. MAYNE
Samuel Wilbur Mayne passed away Friday, January 4, 1991 at the Medicalodge of Eureka. He was 92 years of age. Wilbur, as he was known to his friends, was born on October 30, 1898 in Howard, Kansas to Edgar E. and Pearl Mitchell Mayne. He attended Elk County schools and grew to manhood in the Howard area.
Wilbur joined the United States Army during World War I, and served in France and Germany. On August 26, 1922, he married Alvina Katherina Loef at Coblenz, Germany and to this union were born five children. She preceded him in death on May 8, 1975.
Wilbur was employed as an oil field driller and worked throughout Kansas and Oklahoma, during most of his life. He was also employed for several years as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and later served as Marshall for the City of Severy.
He is survived by three daughters, Betty Palmer of Peru, Kansas, Coletta Vandil of Severy and Junaita Redmond of Topeka, nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Wilbur was preceded in death by his wife, his only son Anton, a daughter Pearl and a grandson Troy Mayne.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 7, 1991 at the Forsberg Funeral Home in Severy with Rev. Albert Eubanks officiating. Mrs. Jessie Langford was the organist with Lloyd G. Zimmerman singing “The Old Rugged Cross” and “In the Garden”. The casket bearers were Clifford Jones, John Spangler, Howard Knight, Charles Flaiz, David Stapleford and James Garver. Military gravesidc services were conducted by the American Legion Carter-Rader post #149 of Howard at South Lawn Cemetery in Severy.
Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and Medicalodge of Eureka. Contributions can be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Forsberg Funeral Home of Severy.
MR. GERALD MCALISTER
Gerald Eugene “G.E.” McAlister passed away on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at the Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline. He was 79 years of age and a lifetime resident of the Moline and Belknap area.
G.E., as he was sometimes known, was born on June 2, 1923, to Johnnie Sheridan and Hazel Dorothy (Chase) McAlister at their home in Belknap.
As a child, Gerald walked two miles each day to attend Belknap Grade School. He attended high school in Moline where he graduated in 1941. During the years, he acquired the nickname “Slim” while playing football at Moline High School.
On February 12, 1942, Lincoln’s Birthday, he married Betty Lorene Ward at Sedan, and to this union was born two daughters, Sharlyn and Connie. They made their home on what people knew as the Patton Ranch, where Gerald and his family resided and ranched for 52 years.
Rodeo was a major part of Gerald’s life. He served as President of the Sedan Round-Up Club from 1956-1967 and once again in 1971. Throughout the years, he could be found at the Moline Rodeo as barrier flagman.
He was known for his calf and team roping abilities and was one of the first cowboys to partner with an African-American, One Brown. He and Gerald made a great team and won many events. Many stories were made from this partnership.
Raising cattle was his livelihood and he also dabbled in sheep and hogs for several years. He enjoyed his horses, each of which had their purpose whether it be coyote hunting, rodeo, or for ranch work.
Wild tales have been told of his greyhound dogs and coyote hunting days. You could also find Gerald in the oil field until he broke his hip in 2001 and moved his residence to the Elk Manor Nurshing Home.
He is survived by his daughter, Connie Hey and Shariyn McAlister, both of Moline; his sister, Mable Kinnamon of Louisburg, Kan.; two grandchildren, Dala Ramsey and Brad Hey, both of Augusta, Kan., and one great granddaughter, Kayla Rene Ramsey.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; an infant son, Royce Eugene; his parents; a brother, Harold Joe and two sisters, lona and Gladys.
Funeral services were held at 2p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard with Pastor Robin Haines of the Flint Hills Assembly of God officiating. Interment was held at Belknap Cemetery in Belknap, Kan.
A memorial has been established with the Belknap Community Fund. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

OBITUARY -- James McCallister
James Monroe McCallister, son of Calvin and Sarah McCallister, was born in Linn county, Missouri, April __, 1854 and died at his home near Piedmont, Kansas, December 25, 1930 at 7 p.m., being at the age of 76 years, 8 months and 22 days.
On March 23, 1877 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Moody. To this union three children were born; namely, Mrs. Florence Wilson of Piedmont, Kansas; William A. who died in infancy and John Thomas who passed away in 1928. He, with his wife settled on the old homestead in 1879 which was their home until the time of their death, she preceding him to the Great Beyond in 1914.
In 1917, he was again united in marriage, this time to Sarah Travis Schoeller, who passed from this life August 30, 1927.
He was a good citizen, honest and upright and in his going he leaves to mourn his loss, one daughter, Mrs. Florence Wilson of Piedmont, one step-son Carl Schoeller of Wichita, Kansas, two granddaughters and two great grandsons, other relatives and a host of friends.
At the age of 19 years he confessed his faith in Christ and has been a faithful follower ever since, being a member of the Christian church. A faithful one from us is gone, a voice we loved is still; a place is vacant in our home that can never be filled.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church, with Rev. C. Z. Allsbury, officiating. Interment was made in Bunker Hill cemetery.
MR. HOWARD A. MCCAMMON - Submitted by Ilene Mullendore Butler
Services for Howard A. McCammon. 66, will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m., at the Graves Memorial Chapel in Caney, Kan., with the Rev. Mike Morris and Pastor Bill Stutts officiating. Burial will be in the Havana Cemetery in Havana, Kan.
Born December 25, 1930 in Grenola, Kan., he died Friday morning at his home.
He was the son of Howard G. and Ruby (Evans) McCammon. He was raised in Grenola and later moved to Caney with his family. He attended Caney schools and graduated from Caney High School.
On Nov. 22, 1950, he married Vivian Howell in Bentonville, Ark., and later moved to Caney. He worked as an assistant supervisor in the Records Center for Corporate Services at Phillips Petroleum Co. in Bartlesville. He retired in 1984 after 35 years of service.
He was a past member of the Nazarene Church and belonged to the Phillips Men’s Club and the Falcon Club of Bartlesville. His hobbies included photography and motorcycle riding.
Survivors include his wife. Vivian of the home: two sons, Tony and Jimmie, both of Caney; two daughters. Lucille Etter and Linda Collins, both of Bartlesville; a sister, Bonnie S. Levan of Caney: six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Byrle G.
Visitation hours will be Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.. Monday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 to 10 a.m. in the Graves Funeral Chapel in Caney.
The family has suggested a memorial to the Caney Fire Department or the Caney Police Department. Memorials may be left with the funeral home.

OBITUARY - McLEAN
John Oliver, son of Stewart Hawthorne and Elmira Bell Rogers McLean, was born October 27, 1874, near Howard, Elk county, Kansas and had lived here all his life with the exception of a few years. He passed away at his home in Howard on October 17, 1944, aged 69 years, eleven months and twenty days.
He was married on December 25, 1911 to Lelia M. Scott of Eldon, Missouri and to this union were born two children, James N. and Treva Gene of the home address. By a former marriage there survives four children, Roy P. McLean, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Elizabeth Boone, of Moline, Kansas; Mae Sacquety, of Whittier, California; and Edna Dalgety, of Wichita, also 14 grandchildren, and one great granddaughter, four brothers and three sisters, a twin brother, George, of Howard, Kansas; Frank, of Washington D. C., Charlie, of Howard, Kansas; Tom, of Washington D. C.; Maggie McLean, of Wichita; Emma Van Camp, of Buffalo, Kansas; Grace Crumrine, of Kansas City, Missouri.
He owned and operated a shoe and harness shop in Howard for about 30 years.
He joined the Methodist church in his early thirties, and was a regular attendant until failing health prevented his going.
Funeral services were held at the Moon Chapel in Howard, Thursday, October 19, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. Otto Shirley, pastor of the Howard Christian church. The pall bearers were Howard Muilenburg, Harvey VanBuskirk, Bert Morgan, George Moore, L. F. Roberts and Carl Rech. Interment was in Grace Lawn cemetery, Howard.
MR. LUTHER MCCLURE - Submitted by L. Morgan
Luther McClure of Howard Townsip Hangs Himself.
Saturday morning the report came to town that Luther McClure had hanged himself. Coroner Trowbridge went down and investigated the matter and it was found that Luther had left the home of his brother, where he was living, and had not returned at evening. A search was made and his body was found hanging to the limb of a big tree not far from his home, and he had apparently been dead many hours. It was not seemed necessry to hold an inquest.
Luther McClure was a bachelor and was about 60 years old. He had a fair education, but many years ago his mind became affected and he has several times been sent to the state asylum. When in his right mind Luther was an intellligent man but the shadow of his recurring insanity hung over him and ruined his life.
Luther McClure was born in Greene county, Pa., June ll, 1847, and was the second oldest in a family of nine children, three of whom survive, two sisters and one brother. Luther had a common school and academy education, and in early manhood taught school several years. He came to Elk county, Kansas, with the MClure famlly, in 1879 and taught at Elk Falls and Moline in the early eighties He never married, but made his home with his father till his death some years ago, since then he has lived with his brother, Lot McClure. He died Saturday, December 31. 1910 and was buried the following day. Funeral services were held at the home, conducted by Bro. George H. Ransom.
MRS. RUTH A.MCCOLLUM
HOWARD-- Ruth "Arlene" McCollum, 79, of Fall River, died Monday at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist church in Severy with interment in Twin Grove Cemetery, Severy.
Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of the serive at the church.
Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, and may be sent to Countryside Funeral Home, P.O. Box 247, Fredonia, KS 66736. Arrangments are under the direction of Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.
Mrs. McCollum was born Oct. 24, 1928 in rural Elk County, to Harry and Alva (Perry) Knapp. She graduated from Severy High School in 1947.
On Feb. 18, 1951, she married John McCollum in Howard, and he died in 2002.
She worked with her husband on their dairy farm near Fall River and they founded the Mid America Dairy Farmers, now the Dairy Farmers of America.
Survivors include four sons, Randy McCollum, Ronnie McCollum, Frank McCollum and Donnie McCollum, all of Fall River; two daughters, Jill McCollum, of Lewis, and Karen VanWinkle, Corning; a sister, Naomi Lacy, Wichita; and eight granddaughters.
MRS. PHYLLIS M. MCCOY - Submitted by Jerry Jackson
Phyllis May McCoy died Friday, September 20, 1996 in Wichita. She was 64 years old.
Mrs. McCoy was born Thursday, August 25, 1932 in Howard, Kansas to Louis Herbert and Pearl Gertrude (Neese) McCoskey. She attended Oakview Christian Church in Wichita and was a member of the Golden Agers, Culden Senior Center and Oakview Senior Center. She was a retired seamstress with American Linen.
Survivors are: 2 daughters, Martha Annette Pracht and Kitty Lorraine Dyke of Wichita; 3 brothers, Robert McCoskey and Lynn McCoskey of Wichita and Clifford McCoskey of Altamont; one sister, Blanche Brown of Wichita; and six grandchildren.
Services will be held at Oakview Christian Church with Rev. Larry Walls and Rev. Jim Duncan, Saturday, September 28, 1996 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Severy Cemetery in Severy, Kansas.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice, Inc. or Oakview Christian Church.

Zerelda E. Meek was born in Greenfield, Indiana, November 20, 1832, died at her home in Howard, Kansas, April 5, 1908 at 1:45 a.m. age 76 years, 4 months, 16 days.
October 24, 1852_Miss Meek became the wife of Eldrich S. Roberts. They removed from Greenfield, Indiana, to Peora, Illinois, and from there they came in 1868 to Greenwood county, Kansas. In the fall of 1869 they came to Elk county locating on a farm 2 1/2 miles west of Howard. Here in 1874 the husband died and on July 17, 1879 Mrs. Roberts became the wife of James W. McDaniel. They continued to live on the farm until some six years ago when they came to Howard.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church April 6 at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Elder Park. Mrs. McDaniel was a faithful member of the Christian church. By her firèt marriage she was the mother of nine children seven of which live to sorrow over her death. They are: Ennis C. at Los Angeles and Ira P. at Long Beach, California, Joshua L. at Pine Ridge, Idaho, Albert M., Perry L. and Mary J. the wife of L. P. McDaniel, reside at Tonkawa, Oklahoma and Leander F. at Howard, Kansas. She also leaves four brothers Noah and Marshal Meek of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Oscar F. Meek of Philadelphia, Indiana, and Albert Meek of Grenola, Kansas. The aged husband has the deep sympathy of a host of friends amd neighbors.
MRS. MARTHA E. MCDONALD
Mrs. Sam'l McDonald, of Busby, one of the oldest residents of Elk County, died at her home last Sunday. She was the widow of Sam'l McDonald, known to all old settlers of the region, who died in 1933. Mrs. McDonald though 88 years of age, has always maintained her home, retaing her own housekeeper, always in readiness to welcome her children and grandchildren at the place they had been accustomed to find her all their lives. Until recent months she had enjoyed good health.
Martha Ellen Frakes was born near Sullivan, Indiana, on February 22nd, 1852 and departed this life at her home east of Howard, Kansas, on November 17th, 1940, at the ripe old age of 88 years, 8 months and 25 days.
On November 18th, 1873 she was united in marriage to Samuel McDonald at Sullivan, Indiana. Six years later Mr. and Mrs. McDonald moved to Wilson County, Kansas, where they resided until the month of March in the year 1884 when they came to Elk County, first locating near Upola and then south of Longton, and finally locating near Busby in the year 1889 where the deceased still resided at the time of her death, having lived there for over fifty years.
To this union were born nine children, eight of whom survive; the youngest son, Chester McDonald, having lost his life in the World War.
Her good husband died at the home near Busby on March 30, 1933. Mrs. McDonald is survived by one sister, Mrs. Jane Jones, and a brother J. A. Frakes of Sullivan, Indiana, and the following children: Theodore McDonald of Elk Falls, Kansas; Elmer McDonald of near Howard, Kansas; Fred McDonald of Mirror, Alberta, Canada; Cash McDonald of near Fall River, Kansas; Mrs. Eva Crubbs of Morehead, Kansas; Mrs. Cora Davis and Mrs. Alma Keesling of Neodesha, Kansas: and Don McDonald of near Howard, Kansas; and she is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Mrs McDonald was a typical pioneer mother. Coming to what was then western, undeveloped country. With her husband and small children, she endured the hardships common to all wives and mothers who had a part in the making of this great commonwealth and to whom we of our present generation owe an everlasting debt of gratitude.
Funeral services were held at the Crumrine Funeral Home in Longton, Kansas, on Tuesday afternoon, November 19th. Mr. Clifford Sullivan first read the obituary, followed by a few very appropriate and impressive remarks by Frank Organ, an old friend of the family. Then Mrs. Mark Harris, with Mrs. Chas. G. Hayward at the piano, sang a solo. Following, Mr. Sullivan delivered an, address in the nature of an eulogy upon the life and contacts of the deceased.
Interment was made in the Longton cemetery where Judge A. T. Ayres, also a friend of the family of long standing, after some preliminary remarks, read a poem from the pen of Edwin Arnold, the English poet and journalist, entitled: “After Death in Arabia.”
MR. EARL J. MCFARLAND
Earl Joseph McFarland passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. He was 93 years of age and was a resident of Howard, Kansas. Earl was born February 5, 1908 at Oak Valley in Elk County, Kansas to Harry Earl and Iva May (Fisher) McFarland. He attended Elk Falls Grammar School and graduated from Elk Falls High School in 1925. At the time of his death, he was the oldest graduate of Elk Falls.
On May 18, 1927, he married Mattie Estel Ruler at Sedan, KS and to this union was born one daughter. Earl and Mattie had been married 71 years when she passed away on June 21, 1998 after a lengthy illness.
Earl joined the Bester G. Brown Masonic Lodge #433 at Wichita, KS in 1946 and then transferred to the Hope Masonic Lodge #155 in Howard, KS. In 1996, he was presented his 50 year Masonic pin.
Earl worked at Union Stock Yards in Wichita until 1929 when he was hired by Phillips Petroleum Company. He started as a service station attendant and then worked in the warehouse. After learning the business from all angles, he was promoted to accountant and then to Division Marketing Manager. In 1961 when the Phillips office in Wichita closed, he was transferred to Kansas City, MO, where he completed more than 40 years of faithful service. In 1969, they moved to Howard, KS, where he took full advantage of his retirement years.
He continued lifetime activities as an avid sportsman who had many adventures hunting, fishing and much success as a bowler and golfer Earl also enjoyed traveling and visiting at family gatherings with his wife, daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
MR. EARL W. MCGEARY
Earl Wallace McGeary passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 1990 at the Greenwood Co. Hospital in Eureka. He was 84 years of age. Earl was born on April 6,1906 in Lincoln County, Ks. to Charles Wallace and Eva D. Smith McGeary. He attended school and grew to manhood in Lincoln County.
On August 24, 1924, he married Maude Caroline Lyne, and to this union were born one son and six daughters. In 1947, Earl moved to Jewel County, Ks. where he farmed for several years. He later moved to Montrose, Ks. where he owned and operated a grocery store. Maude preceded him in death, in Dec. of 1952.
On Dec. 28, 1953, he married Jessie Marie Stroud Brown at Okarche, Okla. They lived in Wichita, Ks. where Earl was a security officer at Macy’s Dept. store for eight years. After he retired in 1967, Earl and Marie moved to Severy where Earl served several terms as mayor of the city.
Earl was baptized in the Christian Church at Lincoln, Ks. when he was 12 years of age. He is survived by his wife, J. Marie of the home, a son Dwayne McGeary, and his wife Ava Don, of Clearwater, Ks., six daughters; Betty Utt and her husband Frank, of Kingman, Arizona, Lois Cheney and her husband Harold, of Sylvan Grove, Ks., Doris Nelson and her husband Jay, of Lincoln, Ks., Nina Snyder and her husband Robert, of Walsenburg, Colo., Phyllis Purcell and her husband Eugene, and Bonnie Langer and her husband Frank, all of Superior, Neb., a step-son Paul Brown and his wife Lueoda, of Scvcry, a sister, Lizzie Lyne and her husband Merle, of Lincoln, Ks., 25 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, 3 stepgrandchildren, 5 step-great grandchildren, 3 step-great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents, three brothers, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, 1990 at the Severy Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Pameticky officiating. Mrs. Sue Hurt was the organist with Mrs. Roylynn Pameticky singing “Mansion Over The Hilltop” and “Each Step I Take”. The casket bearers were Ralph Crane, Howard Knight, Bill Riggins, Orville Shumake, Lawrence Smith and John Spangler. Interment was held at 1:30 p.rn Wednesday, at the Hammer Cemetery near Lincoln, Ks. with Rev. Tom Henstock of the Sylvan and Vesper Presbyterian Churches officiating. A memorial has been established with Alzhcimer Disease and Related Disorders, P.O. Box 2763, Wichita, Ks. 67201. Contributions can be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Forsberg Funeral Home of Severy.
MRS WILMA F. MCGINNIS
Wilma Fay (Boles) McGmnis, age 80, a resident of Fall River, Kansas, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at HCA Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. She was born on January 12, 1921 to Harry E. and Mae (Holliday) Boles on a farm five miles south of Fall River, KS. She received her elementary education at Rule School in Elk County, Kansas, graduating from Fall River High School in 1939. She taught nine years in rural schools in the Fall River and Fredonia area.
On June 11, 1944, she was united in marriage to Harry McGinnis, One son, Eldon, was born to this union.
Wilma and Harry purchased the Fall River Sundries store, which they operated for several years before retiring. Wilma loved to cook and always enjoyed her gardening. She was a member of the Fall River United Methodist Church, where she had served as a board member and Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Columbia Chapter, Order of Eastern Star #142 in Howard, KS. She was to have received her 50 year membership pin from Eastern Star this week. She had been a member of several organizations and clubs which she had to drop because of health. These included the Senior Advance Club, several quilting clubs and the EHU Unit. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dean Boles.
She is survived by her husband, Harry, of the home, son, Eldon and wife, Jane, Fredonia, three grandchildren, David and Gayann McGinnis, Wichita, KS, DeeAnn and Lance Edens, Fredonia and Dana and Matt Anderson, Independence, two great granddaughters, Faith Edens, Fredonia, and Ariel McGinnis, Wichita, and her twin sister, Wilda Moore, Severy.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2001, at the Fall River United Methodist Church with Rev. Charlotte Coates officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Fall River. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6:00-7:00 p.m.
A memorial has been established in her name with the Fall River United Methodist Church. Timmons Funeral Home in Fredonia is in charge of the arrangements.

Cora Dolly (Green) McGlasson
Cora Dolly (Green) McGlasson, 93, longtime resident of Winfield, died Tuesday, December 9, 2003, at her home. Funeral Services were held at the First Baptist Church in Winfield and interment followed in Highland Cemetery.
Born April 12, 1910, in Moline, she was the daughter of William Young and Minta (Lee) Green. Dolly graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1929. Dolly made her home in Cedar Vale until 1962 when she moved to Winfield.
Survivors include her sons, Elman McGlasson of Nashville, Tenn., Robert McGlasson of Bartlesville, OK., Carl McGlasson of Ponca City, OK., John McGlasson of Nashville, Tenn, and Delbert McGlasson of Kilgore Texas; daughters Nedra Giles of Newkirk, OK, and Dixie Trotter of Winfield; 18 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and sisters, one grandson, one great-grandson, and two great-great grandsons.

Delbert Loyd McGlasson
Del McGlasson, 64, formerly of Arkansas City, died Thursday, March 15, 2007 at Kilgore, Texas. Graveside services were held Saturday at the Hickory Grove Cemetery near Kilgore.
Del was born March 24, 1942 in Grenola to William and Dolly McGlasson. He graduated from Cedar Vale High School. He was a member of the Forest Home Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Diana McGlasson of the home; five daughters, Sherry Coldwell, of Arkansas City, Debbie Pfeffer of Lenexa, Kandiss Lane, Kami Day, and Kari Porter, all of Texas; his brothers and sisters, Elman, Robert, Carl, and John McGlasson, Dixie Trotter and Nedra Giles; and nine grandchildren.
MR. HARRY MCGLASSON
H0WARD — Harry McGlasson, 92, of Moline, died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital in Independence.
Services will be conducted Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist church in Moline with the Rev. Glen Epp officiating. Interment will be in Moline Cemetery, under the direction of Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church and they may be left at the funeral home.
Mr. McGlasson was born Aug. 25, 1902 at Butterfield, Mo. to Edward and Sidney (Parmley) McGlasson. He moved with his family to Chautauqua County and attended Ebeneezer rural school.
On June 7, 1922 at Sedan, he married Mary M. "Gretta" Casebolt and she died in 1993. The couple lived in the Elk and Chautauqua county areas throughout their married life and he worked for the road maintenance department for the state.
Mr. McGlasson was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, John F. McGlasson, Seiling, Okla.; two grandsons, two stepgreat-grandchildren and one stepgreat-great-grandson.
MRS. DAISY M. MCGUIRE
Daisy Mae McGuire was born to Charles Henry and Altha Mable Wood on November 19, 1901 on the family farm southeast of Grenola, KS. She attended Fairview Rural School and, Grenola High, later transferring to Moline High School to participate in the Normal training program graduating in 1921. She completed her training at Emporia State Teachers College and taught at rural White School district the following year.
Daisy M. and Harry C. McGuire were united in marriage at the Elk County Courthouse at Howard, KS, on August 20, 1922. They made their home for more than 20 years on North Plum St. in Moline, where they were blessed with two children, Harvey Charles and Phyllis A.
Daisy’s faithful journey began at a community revival in 1924 at a wooden tabernacle in uptown Moline. An evangelistic team “The Roses’ preached and sang the Good News to her heart. The First Christian Church, Moline became the family church home until 1942 when the family moved to Wichita. She, along with the family, joined the Broadway Christian Church and was a faithful servant for 42 years until moving the membership to First Christian at Manhattan in 1988.
Daisy was active in Christian Womens Fellowship, and a teacher of the 3-4 year olds Sunday School class for 25 years. When her church speaks of her they say, “Daisy was a gracious lady of the church, one who was a living witness to the values of truth, trust, and belief.”
A faithful wife, companion, and mother, Daisy was a homemaker who exemplified the family values we are striving for in the nation. During World War II Daisy was employed as a riveter at Boeing Aircraft Co., after completing riveter schooling. She worked only to help her country.
Daisy was a very loyal member of the Moline Alumni Association and rarely missed returning home to Moline for the traditional march uptown and the Alumni banquet. She had near perfect attendance record for over 70 years.
Also a member of the Neptune Chapter of Order of Eastern Star of which her interest and membership had been maintained throughout the years. Plagued with rheumatism and arthritis most of her life she rarely complained, and fought back from a recent stroke, and the loss of her husband and loving son.
She remained in her Manhattan home, where she’d moved after the death of her husband in 1988 near the devoted care of her faithful daughter, Phyllis and son—in—law, Floyd Price, until she was called to her heavenly home on August 26, 1996.
She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis and son-in-law, Floyd Price of Manhattan, KS, daughter-in-law, Harriett McGuire of Wichita, five grandchildren, Hope Bright of Linus, MO., Heather Weidner of Wichita, Harris McGuire of Wichita, Margaret Ann O’Brien of, Chandler, AZ, and Charles Price of Wichita, and the joy of her life, seven great-grandchildren. Jessie, Avery, and Darcy Rose Bright, Katie and Kelsey Weidner, Charlie and Colleen O’Brien; nephew David A. Brace and family of Moline; and niece Virginia Huntington and family of the rural Longton area.
Her son. Harvey Charles preceded her in death in 1982.
MRS. VIVIAN MCKEE
Vivian McKee passed away Thursday, March 21, after a sudden illness near the Post Office at Howard. She was 77 years of age. Vivian was born on October 7, 1913 at Dennison, Texas to William E. and Alice Cox Hasty. Her family moved to Kansas when she was a young girl, and Vivian graduatcd from Howard High School.
She was employed at the Howard Post Office and the Elk County Draft Board for several years. In 1943, Vivian moved to California and married George Washington McKee at Glendora, in 1944. He preceded her in death in 1976. Vivian returned to Howard in 1983, after living with her son, Charles, in San Bernadino, California.
Vivian enjoyed the fellowship of the Howard Senior Center and regularly attended the Friendship Meals there.
She is survived by two sons, Charles of San Bernadino, Ca. and Paul of Leavenworth, Wa. a daughter Irene Loomis of San Bernadino, Ca. a brother Ernest Hasty and a sister Effie Strachan, both of Howard, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers; Haskel, who died in infancy, Ed, Fred, and Howard, and three sisters, Grace, Emma and Hazel.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 26 at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard with Rev. Gary Parsons of the Howard United Methodist Church officiating. A memorial has been established with the Howard Senior Center. Contributions can be left with the funeral home.The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Flome of Howard.

MRS. EDITH MCLIN
HOWARD — Mrs. Frank (Edith) McLin, 90, a former Howard resident, died Wednesday at the Manor Nursing Home in Independence.
Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Grace Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Roy L. Brown, pastor of the Howard United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be under the direction of the Spurrier Funeral Home.
Mrs. Edith McLin was born Feb. 2, 1832, at Saybrook, Ill., the daughter of Snowden and Mary (Keene) Coile. She married Frank McLin at Howard Feb. 23, 1910, and they resided in the Howard vicinity for many years. They moved into the city of Howard in 1962.
Mrs. McLIn was a member of the. Rebekah Lodge. There are no immediate survivors other than several nieces and nephews and a cousin, R. Coile of Howard.
MR. WILL MCLIN
Last Wednesday evening about five o'clock while engaged in sawing wood with his brother on the old Campbell farm near Western Park. Will McLin fell against a circular saw and was instantly killed. He was carrying a stick of wood and at the time had his back to the saw when he stepped on a round stick, throwing him off of his balance and directly on the saw. He was killed instantly.
William L. McLin, son of J. H. and Elmira McLin was born in the state of Indiana, March 7th, 1869 and departed this life March 11th, 1905, age 39 years and 4 days.
Death is always sad, but sometimes as in the case of Will McLin its sadness is enhanced by the fact that he was called to meet death in the vigor and strength of young manhood and without a moment’s notice. And yet earths sorrows are not without their compensation, and in this case the fact that Will McLin bad lived in a state of readiness for this great change which must sooner or later come to each and all of us, will be of great comfort and consolation to his loved ones.
He united with the Baptist cburch in 1901 and was a member of the same at the time of his death. He was an honest and upright Christian man, one who had the confidence of all who knew him. He leaves a father, mother and ???? brothers to mourn his sudden and sorrowful death. The funeral services was held at the Baptist church in this city and the pastor, Rev. Bearcey spoke of "Readiness to Meet Death." Luke 13:40.
MRS. MARGARET E. MCMILLEN - Submitted by L. Morgan
Margaret Ellen McMillen was born in Jefferson county, Missouri March 19, 1858, died in Howard, Kansas, March 27, 1911, age 53 years and 8 days.
She with her parents moved in 1880 to Randolph county, Illinois where she lived until December 24, 1874 she was married in Lilly Grove, Illinois to ?? H. Maxwell. They came to Pittsburg, Kansas in 1883 then later in the same year they moved to Elk county, Kansas.
To them were born eight children, four sons and four daughters, five of whom survive: ?? Wheeler, T.A. Maxwell, ?? R. Maxwell, Virgie Tarwater and Minnie Maxwell, Howard, Kansas. She also leaves five grandchildren. Three of her children died in infancy, Wm. E., Geo. L, and Katie.
She was converted in 1891 and joined the Baptist church of Howard, Kansas. Later having moved to Clear Creek neighborhood there she in 1900 united with the Methodidst Espiscopel church. Afterward moving back to Howard she transferred her membership to the Methodist church of Howard of which church she was a member at the time of her death.
She lived a life filled more or less with grief and sorrow. But in all her trials she was a courageous faithful Christian. Her last sickness was of long duration, much pain an gradual weakening until the end. In it all she manifested much patience and a strong faith in God. Besides her relatives a host of friends mourn her departure.
The funeral services were held in the Clear Creek church by Rev. ?? Nichols.
MR. CHESTER W. MCMINN
Chester William McMinn passed away Monday, December 12, 1994 at the Medicalodge in Eureka, KS. He was 79 years of age. Bill, as he was known to his friends, was born on June 24, 1915 at Wichita, KS. to James Primrose and Nancy Grace (Henderson) McMinn. He was the third child born to this family.
Bill graduated form Wichita East High School in 1933. After his father’s death in 1934 Bill took over the family farm northeast of Wichita. His mother died in 1944 and after his sisters married Bill continued to operate the farm.
He married Mary Margaret Cain in 1944 and to this union were born three daughters, Margaret, Mary, and Casandra. This marriage ended in divorce in 1969.
Bill enjoyed raising and training horses on his farm near Wichita. He continued to operate the family farm on north Woodlawn until 1979. At the age of 64, he retired and moved to a farm near Severy, KS.
He is survived by three daughters, Margaret Odle of Howard, Mary Elkins of Belle Plaine, KS., and Sandy Maxwell of Mulvane, KS., seven grandchildren; Clint Odle of Sedgwick, Ty Odle of Whitewater, Vince Odle of El Dorado, Lacy Elkins of Belle Plaine, and Thomas, Alicia and Eugenia Schultz all of Howard, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jimmy, and two sisters, Gertrude and Margaret.
Graveside services were held Saturday, December 17, 1994 at Cresco Cemetery north of Howard.
MR. DALE L. MCNOWN
MOLINE - Dale Leon McNown passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2006, at his home in Moline. He was 82 years of age and a former resident of Burlingame, Kan.
Dale was born on Jan. 7, 1924, at Belknap to Glenn Adelbert and Edna Mae (McAlister) McNown. He attended school and grew to manhood in the Belknap and Moline area. Dale served in the United States Navy dwing World War II.
On Oct. 9, 1947, he married Margaret Elizabeth Denton at Burden. Dale and Margaret lived in Winfield for a short time before moving to Moline in the late 1940s. They made their borne in several locations throughout Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri, and settled in Burlingame in 1959.
They have made their home at Moline since July of 1976, where Dale was employed as a supervisor at the Martin-Marietta Rock Quarry. He retired from Martin-Marietta and then worked several years for Blacktop Construction. Margaret preceded him in death on Jan. 4, 2004.
He was a member of the Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post #388 of Moline and a PastMaster of the Corinthian Masonic Lodge #79 in Burlingame.
He is survived by his son Gary of Moline; his daughter Paula Clyde and her husband Chris of Derby; his former daughter-in-law Karen McNown of Dover, Ark.; his brother Bud McNown of El Dorado; four grandchildren, Nathan and Cristen of Derby, Nikki McNown of RusseLlville, Ark., and Glenn McNown of Malvern, Ark.; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and a brother, Ivan McNown.
MR. ORVAL E. MCNOWN
Orval Edward McNown, 74, of Moline, Kansas, died Thursday, January 25, 1996, at Riverside Health Services, Wichita, Kansas. He was born July 13, 1921, in Kansas, to William Harvey and Florence (McAlister) McNown.
He was a veteran of World War II and a Farmer-Rancher and Oil Producer. On July 8, 1952, he and Evelyn Ruth Marshall were united in marriage. She preceded him in death on April 30, 1980. On July 28, 1982 he and Melva C. Whaley Ruddle were united in marriage. She survives at the home.
Also surviving are two sons, Kcnneth McNown of Sedan, Kansas, and Carl McNown of Moline, Kansas; one step-son, Eldon Ruddle of Moline, Kansas; one step-daughter, Corliss Spiller of Longton, Kansas; three brothers, Alfred McNown of Moline, Kansas, Roy McNown of Cedar Vale, Kansas, and Harrison McNown of Winfield, Kansas; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 29, 1996, at 2:00 p.m., in the Graves-Baird Funeral Home Chapel, Sedan, Kansas. Interment was in the Belknap Cemetery, Rural Moline, Kansas. Rev. Kevin Baxter officiated. Graves-Baird Funeral Home, Sedan, was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established in his name with the American Heart Association.
MRS. THELMA MCNOWN
SEDAN — Thelma McNown, 85, of Sedan, died Sunday at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Graves-Baird Funeral Home with Pastor Wally Racker officating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Sedan.
Memorials are suggested to the Belknap Community Church.
Mrs. McNown was born June 12, 1910 at Sedan, to Harvey and Sarah (Brewlngton) Webb. She married Owen Stephens on July 4, 1929 at Sedan, and he died in 1958. On Oct. 28, 1961, at Wichita, she married Alfred McNown and he survives. Mrs. McNown was a member of the Belknap Community Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge, the Chautauqua County Council on Aging and the Senior Citizens.
Other survivors include two Sons, Norman Stephens, Americus, and Harvey Stephens, Branson, Mo.; a daughter, Phyllis Hernandez, Wichita; three stepdaughters, Pauline Doty and Joan Kinkaid, both of Sedan, and Jeanne Crawford, Power City, Mo.; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
MRS. OTHELLO MCSPADDEN
Othello McSpadden, 83, former Moline resident, died Monday, Jan. 17, 1994 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Hays where she had been a resident since November of 1992.
She was born on Aug. 10, 1910 in Grenola to J. J. "Jink" and Mollie (Tindlc) Wood. She married John McSpadden on Apr. 18, 1931 at Moline, he preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1967.
Othello was a busy housewife and enjoyed her home and family. She taught at Wolf Creek School before her marriage and worked the first year of the Moline School lunch program as head cook.
She was an active member of the Moline United Methodist Church. Othello taught the Nursery Sunday School class for many years and was active in the United Methodist Women until her health failed. She was a member of the Friendly Neighbor Bible Study group for many years. Othello also served on the Girl Scout Board.
She is survived by two daughters, Marge White and her husband Merle of Issaquah, Wash, and Pat Hall of Hays; six grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; one sister, Genece Jones and her husband Kenneth of Wellington; one brother, Jim Wood and his wife Jean of Vinita, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters, Aliene Bacus and Marjoric Hammond, and one brother, Gwynnc "Kern" Wood.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 Thursday, Jan. 20 at the Moline United Methodist Church with Rev. LaDonna Carey and Rev. Larry Bowyer officiating. Interment will be held in the Molinc Cemetery at Moline. Memorials have been established with the Molinc United Methodist Church. Contributions can be left with the funeral home. GRENOLA-- Levi Michael Thomas Measles VanDerhagen, 18, of Grenola and formerly of Chanute, died Saturday of injuries sustained in a car accident.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn cemetery, Grenola, with Pastor Robin Haines officiating. Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard, is handling arrangement.
He was born Sept. 27, 1989, in Mesa, Ariz., the son of Timothy Measles Sr. and Coreen Kenyon. He was a concrete finisher for Caney River Concrete.
Survivors include his finance, Adrian Wheat, Grenola; his father, Hutchinson; his mother, of Grenola; his step-father, Jeff Riddle; two brothers, Caleb Measles Sr., LaHarpe, and Wrangler Sweet, Grenola; a step-brother Patrick Riddle, Grenola; his maternal grandmother, Melanie Jiannino; his paternal grandmothers, Shirley Measles and Dianna VanDerhagen; his great-great grandparents, Mary Margaret Dotson, Elizabeth Featherston and Thomas Jiannino.

MRS. HAZEL L. MILLER
SEDAN, Kan. - Hazel Laura Miller, 87, longtime Sedan area resident, died Monday morning, July 11, 2005, at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.
She was born April 27, 1918, at Sedan to Chris and T. Lee (Darnall) Hendricks. She grew up and attended school in Sedan.
On Sept. 25, 1936, she married Wiiford Milton Miller at Howard, Kan. Following their marriage, they made their home in the Sedan area, except while Mr. Miller was in the service during WW II. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986.
Mrs. Miller was a longtime employee of Sedan Floral. She was a member of the Tallgrass Fiddlers Assoc. at Pawhuska, Okla.
Survivors include two daughters, Bertha “Bert” Miller, Buffalo, Kan., Wilda Reynolds, Tyro, Kan.; one son, Stephen Miller, Sedan; one sister, Tina Halderman, Cherryvale, Kan.; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Corrine Miller and a special friend, Chester Griffin.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 14, 2005, at Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan, with Rev. Charles Klassen of the First Baptist Church officiating.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. to sign the register book at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan. The casket will be closed.

MR. KENNETH C. MILLER
GRENOLA, Kan. - Kenneth Charles Miller passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at his home south of Grenola, Kan. He was 52 years of age. Kenny was born on Sept. 10, 1952 at Winfield, Kan. to Albert Homer, Jr. and Grace Caroline (Bennitt) Miller. After graduating from high school, Kenny completed a degree at Independence Community College in 1972 and received a Bachelor degree in criminal justice from Wichita State University in 1975.
On Feb. 14,1982, he married Byrdee Zell (Lewis) Stephens at Grenola, Kan. and they made their home in the Grenola area. Kenny was employed as a shortage administrator at Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita. He has also served as an Elk County Deputy Sheriff since 1981.
Kenny was currently a First Responder for the Elk County Emergency Medical Service and served as Grenola City Fire Chief for several years. He also served as a security guard at West Elk High School in Howard. Kenny was a former member of the Grenola City Council and was instrumental in establishing the water tower and water treatment system during his term as Mayor of Grenola.
He enjoyed playing softball and has been active in the youth baseball program at Grenola for many years. Kenny was a deacon of the Grenola Christian Church and enjoyed working with the church youth groups. He has recently served as church treasurer.
He is survived by his wife, Byrdee; sons, Brian Stephens, Grenola and Kevin Miller of Burden; his step-mother, Pansy Franks, Grenola; his brothers, Donald Miller and Robert Miller, both of Grenola; a sister, Diana Foiles, Lynden, Kan. and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. qn Saturday, April 30, 2005, at the Grenola Community Building, with Pastor Wallace Wartick of the Grenola Christian Church officiating. Interment was held in the Greenlawn Cemetery at Grenola.

Nellie Christena (Howell) Miller, 94, of Grenola, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Pleasant Valley Nursing Center in Sedan. She was born February 2, 1914 near Pueblo, Colorado the daughter of Robert Adam and Christena Elnor (Decker) Howell. She was the middle child of 11 children.
On August 25, 1947, Nellie was united in marriage to Richard W. Miller, in Moline, KS. They were married for 56 years until his death on August 15, 2004.
Nellie was a school teacher in Chautauqua and Elk counties for more than 30 years. She enjoyed children from beginning grades through high school. She coached girls’ basketball, volleyball, track and softball. After retiring, Nellie was very active with the Grenola Senior Citizens Center, driving, maintaining records and supporting every effort including quilting. Nellie served as Mayor for the city of Grenola for a time after retirement. She continued to be involved in community activities until ill health made her unable.
Nellie mostly loved children. She also enjoyed crafting and mastered several different mediums. She encouraged having fun in every activity.
Survivors include:

MRS. TERESE M. MILLER
CALDWELL — Terese Marie “Terry” Miller, 76, of Caldwell, formerly of Howard, died Sept. 23, 1995, at Caldwell District Hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Howard. The Rev. Dennis Lorcnz will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the Caldwell Alumni Association. Contributions may he left with Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.
Miller was born Sept. 2, 1919, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Peter Francis and Henrietta (Dubben) Boyer. Her mother died when Miller was 12, and she moved to New York City to live with her aunt. Miller graduated from Mamarinas High School in New York in 1936.
She received nurse’s training at Grasslands Hospital in New York City and became a registered nurse. In April 1945 she entered the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged as a second lieutenant in June 1946.
She married Charles “Cob” Miller Dec. 31, 1946, in New York City. They lived many years in Howard where they owned and operated Cob’s Food Market. They later moved to Caldwell to be near their daughter. He died May 24 1988.
Survivors include a daughter, Vickj Burdett, Caldwell, and two granddaughters.
GLENDA I. MILLS
Glenda Irene Mills died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita She was 63 years - of age and a long time resident of Moline. Glenda was born on May 15, 1943 at Russell to Robert Wesley and Wanda Mae (Shipman) Beaumont. After Robert’s death, her mother remarried and Glenda was raised by her mother and George Westwood. She grew up in Howard and graduated from Howard High School in 1961. Glenda later completed cosmetology school.
On April 8, 1963, she married Rodger Lynn Mills at Kansas City and they made their home in Moline. To this union were born a son and a daughter. Glenda was employed in the banking business for more than twenty years and retired in 2003. Her hobbies included crafting, crocheting, listening to Celine Dion music and she loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Glenda is survived by her husband, Rodger; her son Rodney Mills and his wife Marlana of Arkansas City; her daughter Lorri Robert and her husband Jay of Augusta; her brother Jim Beaumont of Wichita; her sister Joyce Bills of Climax; and her grandchildren, Blake and Ashlynn Mills and Jaiden and Brooke Robert. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jack Beaumont.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 4, 2006 at the Moline Christian Church with Pastor Stan Rumbaugh and Pastor Gary Boles officiating. The casket bearers were Chris Clyde, Bobby Mills, Greg Mills, Randy Mills, Russell Mills and Mark Mills. The honorary casket bearers were John Bills and Harold Dean Mills.

MR. THOMAS W. MILLS
MOLINE - Thomas Wayne Mills passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at his home west of Moline. He was 52 years of age.
Tom was born on May 3, 1952, at Sedan to Calvin Leroy and Mary Lou (Perrigo) Mills. He grew up in the Moline community and graduated from Moline High School in 1970.
On Sept. 6, 1970, he married Wanda Louise Cain at the Elk Falls United Methodist Church in Elk Falls and to this union were born three children, Shawn Thomas, Chelise Diane and Stephanie Lynn.
In 1980, Tom and Wanda began operating the Moline Feed and Supply in partnership with Roger and Linda Patteson. In 1987, Tom and Wanda bought controlling interest in the business and have owned and operated the business as Mills Feed and Supply. Tom was a partner with his son, Shawn, in operating the Mills Ranch near Moline. He took great pride in watching his son follow in his footsteps.
Tom and Wanda celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on Monday, Sept. 6, and spent the day with their family. Tom enjoyed spending time with his wife and family most of all.
He was a member of the board of directors of the Moline High School Alumni Association and served as chairman of Rural Water District #1. Tom was a former mayor and city council member of Moline, and served as the Moline Fire Chief. He was a stockholder of the Moline Rodeo Association for many years and was recently appointed to the office of President. Tom was a member of Hope Masonic Lodge #155 of Howard, Ladonia Chapter #243 Order of the Eastern Star of Elk Falls and the Moline. Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda; his son, Shawn, Moline; his daughters, Chelise Moore and her husband Matt, and Stephanie Mills, all of Moline; his parents, Calvin and Mary Lou Mills, Moline; his mother-in-law, Bernice Cain, Moline; his brothers, Gary, Mulvane, Mike, Moline and Dan, El Dorado; two grandsons, Austin and Dylan Moore, Moline; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 2p.m., on Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at the Moline Christian Church with Rev. Gary Boles and Rev. Mark Loftin officiating. Interment was held at the Moline.

MOLINE - William Rex Mitchell, 89, a resident of Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline and a former longtime resident of Elk Falls, died Jan. 19, 2005, at Sedan City Hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Moline Cemetery. The Rev. Tony Pameticky will officiate.

Mitchell was born Feb. 17, 1915, in Siloam Springs, Ark., to Nettie (Eastland) and Frederick Augusta Mitchell. He attended school and grew to manhood on a farm at Glencoe, Okla., homesteaded by his father during the Cherokee Strip Run.
In 1935 he and Ollie Marie LaFollette married. They later divorced.
Mitchell worked at several occupations during his life but devoted most of it to farming and ranching. He was employed at Beech Aircraft in Wichita for 20 years until retiring and buying a farm in Elk Falls.
Survivors include a son, Larry Mitchell, Howard; two daughters, Irene Mustoe and Donna Parker, both of Hilmar, Calif; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

N. MOMMA DEAD
Our citizens were greatly shocked last Tuesday morning to hear that Mr. N. Momma had breathed his last at his home in this city. The city and county have, in the death of Mr. Momma, lost one of its best citizens--a loss that will be felt keenly. He was laid to rest in Grace Lawn cemetery Wednesday and the last sad rites were performed by the A. F. & A.M. of which Mr. Momma was a member. A large number of sympathizing friends from surrounding towns were present and the funeral procession was the largest ever seen in Howard.

Minard W. Monical, age 91, of Howard, Kansas passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, Kansas. Minard was born August 15, 1916 in Grandview, Oregon the son of Calvin and Ada Bowser Monical.
Minard attended school at the Highland Rural School, Upper Paw Paw and graduated in 1935 from Severy High School. After high school Minard farmed with his parents on their family farm north of Howard until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 30, 1942. During his military service Minard worked as a cook and a mechanic until his discharge on February 26, 1946. After his service to his country Minard came back to the farm where he would remain until his retirement.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Howard, American Legion Center Rader Post 149, Paw Paw Township Board, ASC Community Committee and served as the sexton for the Cresco Cemetery for many years. In his spare time Minard enjoyed bowling and won several trophies throughout the state as a bowler.
He is survived by several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

DEATH OF PIONEER LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEER
Burt Monroe Brought First Passenger Train Into Howard
Geo. H. Craner of Moline, received a wire from Argentine on Tuesday of last week, that Bert Monroe, the veteran locomotive engineer, had died Monday morning, May 7.
Bert Monroe was for a great many years a locomotive engineer on the A. T. & S. F. road, and in December 1879, brought the first train carrying passengers into Howard on the Howard Branch. The construction train first entering the Howard townsite a few days before was brought in by an engineer named Puffer. Monroe continued in regular duty on the Howard Branch until he retired on a pension fifteen or twenty years ago. The Monroe family lived in Howard for five or six years, from 1879 till the road was extended to Moline, when they removed to that city. Soon after he retired from active engineering, the family removed to Argentine.
“Old Bert” Monroe is most kindly remembered by many readers of this paper. He was twice married, his second wife and several children surviving him.
MRS. BESSIE RUTHIE MOORE
Bessie Ruthie Moore passed away Saturday, January 1, 1994 at the William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield. She was 69 years of age. Ruth, as she was knwon, was born on February 13, 1924 at Howard to 0. Samuel and Jessie Eva (Draper) Branaby. She grew to womanhood in the Longton community and graduated from Longton High School in 1942.
On April 8, 1944, she married Howard Wesley Moore at Fredonia and to this union were born a daughter, Judy, and a son Darrel. In their early years of marriage, Ruth and Howard lived and worked on a ranch near Howard. After several years of working in pipeline construction, they bought a backhoe business in 1962, and resided in Grenola. Ruth worked as a Licensed Mental Health Technician at the Winfield State Hospital, until her rttirement in 1988.
She loved to spend time with her family, and was a 4-H leader for several years. Ruth was active in the Grenola Community Club and helped cook for the annual bean feed.
She is survived by her husband, Howard W. Moore, a son Darrel W. Moore and his wife Beth, a daughter Judy Perrigo and her husband, Jack, all of Grenola, three brothers, Ike Barnaby of Clovis, N.M., Glenn Barnaby of Longton and Jim Barnaby of Barnsdall, OK., two sisters, Millie Bryant of Independence, and Marie Marshall of Neodesha, five granchildren; Brian Perrigo of Winfield, Brant Perrigo of Joplin, Kristy Perrigo of Grenola, and Allen Moore and Scott Moore, both of Winfield, one great granddaughter, Shelby Dawn, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. Ruth was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and George Barnaby, and three sisters, Mabel Shanks, Goldie Jontra, and Anabelle Hogan.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 5, 1994 at the Grenola Christian Church with Rev. Wallace Wartick and Brant Perrigo officiating. Mrs. Judy Wolfe was the organist with Jack and Judy Perrigo singing “One Day At A Time” and Judy Perrigo singing “Wind Deneath My Wings.” The casket bearers were Eugene Clark, Allen Moore, John Moore, Scott Moore, Brant Perrigo, and Brain Perrigo. The honorary casket bearers were Bill Barnaby, Eddie Barnaby, Lawrence Jontra, Charles Pickell, Bill Rader, and Jerry Shanks. Interment was held in Greenlawn Cemetery at Grenola. CEDAR VALE — Glen V. Moore, 82, longtime resident of Cedar Vale, died Sept. 10, 1995, at Cedar Vale Nursing Center.

Moore was born March 21, 1913, in Grenola, the son of Allen and Kate (Kyser) Moore. He lived in Grenola and Burden before moving to Cedar Vale in 1964.
Survivors include a brother, Loel Moore, Winfield, and a sister, Ruby Bohannan, Wichita.
MRS. GRACE L. MOORE
Grace Lowry Moore passed away Saturday, October 1, 1994 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. She was 75 years of age. Grace was born February 13, 1919 at Denver, CO. to John Niles and Hulda Louise (Chambers) Ludlow. At an early age, Grace moved with her family to Central City, CO., where she attended school and grew to womanhood.
On April 27, 1940, she married Marion Wesley Lowry at Independence and to this union were born two Sons and three daughters. They lived a few years in Independence before moving to Moline, where they made their home. Grace was a devoted wife and mother, who dedicated her life to caring for her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion, on December 13, 1969.
Grace married John Thomas "Tom" Moore on August 27, 1971 and moved to the MK&O ranch south of Grenola. She returned to the Moline community after Tom’s death in 1981.
She was a member of the Ladonia Chapter #243, Order of the Eastern Star at Elk Falls, and the Moline United Methodist Church. Grace was also a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary, Sew and Sew Club, Forty and Eight Auxiliary, and the Mother’s Club, all of Moline.
She is survived by a son Gerald Scott of Winfield, three daughters Shirley Alice Morgan of Wichita, Linda Sue Jonasson of Lenexa and Mary Lou Hogan of Independence, three stepdaughters Lois Bell of El Dorado, Delores Ware of Colorado Springs, CO. and Cheryl Jordan of Winfield, a brother Charlie “Bud” Ludlow of Central City, CO., fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Marion W. Lowry and her husband Tom Moore, her son John W. Lowry, her parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 5, 1994 at the Moline United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Bowyer officiating.. Mrs. Wanda Mills was the organist with. Alan Rousselle singing “On Eagle Wings” and “Precious Memories.” The casket bearers were David Brace, Dennis Hogan, Jim Hogan, Torn Mills, Roger Patteson and Harold Sheel. Interment was held in the Moline Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Moline United Methodist Church and the Mercy Hospital Transportation Service, 800 W. Myrtle, Independence, KS 67301.

MRS. MARGARET E. MOORE
MOLINE, Kan. - Margaret Elizabeth Moore, 78, of Moline, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at the Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
She was born Aug. 31, 1926 in Boulanger, Okla., to George and Mamie Kirchner. She marned Paul Monroe Moore. She was a homemaker all of her life, and a member of the Chautauqua Southern Baptist Church in Chautauqua, Kan.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Moore, of the home in Moline; six sons, Jim Moore, Sedan, Kan., Lester Moore, Moline, Kan., Howard Wayne Moore, Kempner, Texas, Alvin Moore, Moline, Kan., Gerald Moore, Independence, Kan. and Norman Moore, Alton, Okla.; one brother, Jim Kirchner, Sedan, Kan.; 29 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Paul Earl Moore, and three brothers, Chad, Fredrick and Ralph Kirchner.
Her funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan 14, at the Chautauqua Southern Baptist Church with Rev. Walter Damell officiating. Interment was at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Chautauqua.
Arrangements were under the care of Penwell-Gabel Graves Chapel of Caney.
MR. PAUL E. MOORE
Paul Earl Moore, age 53, of Chautauqua, Kansas, died Friday, December 29, 2000. He was born August 1, 1947 in Cedar Vale, Kansas to Paul Munroe and Margaret (Kirchner) Moore. He grew up in Elgin, KS and attended school in the Peru area.
In 1966, Earl entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1968. He and Crystal Teague were married in 1969 in Sedan, KS. He was employed by the Floyd Mills Ranch for five years and then for Groendyke Transport from 1975 to 1989. He then worked for the Road & Bridge Department of Chautauqua County from 1991 until his death.
Earl was a member of the Sedan Roundup Club, Kansas Old Timers' Association and the Kansas Invitational Old Timers' Association. His hobbies included hunting, team roping, horseback riding with his granddaughter and fishing with his two grandsons.
Survivors include his wife, Criss, of the home, one son, Travis E. Moore, Sedan, KS, one daughter, Tammy E. Jones and her husband,Michael, Sedan KS, three grandchildren, Casie, Garrett and Andrew Jones, Sedan, KS, parents Paul and Margaret Moore, Chautauqua, KS, six brothers, Jim, Sedan, KS, Lester, Moline, KS, Wayne, Kempner, TX, Alvin, Coffeyville, KS, Gerald, Ft. Bragg, NC and Norman, Alton, KS.
Visitation hours will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at the Graves Memorial Chapel in Caney, KS. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 4, 2001, at the Graves Memorial Chapel in Caney with the Reverend Fred Von Moss of the Cardin Baptist Church in Cardin, OK officiating. Burial will follow with military rites in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Chautauqua, KS.
The family suggests a memorial to the Paul Earl Moore Memorial Fund and can be made at the Bank of Sedan in Sedan, KS or at the Graves Funeral Home at Caney.

MR. JAMES MORELAND
James K. Moreland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Moreland, was born December 24, 1889, near Grenola, Kansas. Departed this life February 12, 1929, at the age of 40 years, one month and 19 days, after three days illness, of pneumonia. He had lived until the past seven years in Chautauqua county, and since that time in Ponca City, Oklahoma.
He was married July 5, 1922, to Lida May Sharp at Bartlesville, Okla. To their union two daughters were born: Floreine age 6, and Lucille age 3. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and two children, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Moreland of Sedan; four brothers, Ira of Blackwell, Oklahoma, Walter of Oklahoma City, Lander of Peru, and Ernest of Sedan; two sisters Mrs. Daisy Kelley of Ponca City, and Mrs. Jessie Jones of Sedan. Besides a host of other relatives and friends.
Interment was at Ponca City Thursday, February 14, at 10;30 o'clock.

MR. HOWARD W. MOORE
GRENOLA — Howard Wesley Moore, 69, of Grenola, backhoe business operator and construction worker, died May 7, 1995, in William Newton Memorial Hospital, Winfield.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Grenola Christian Church. The Rev. Robert Todd will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Grenola.
Judy Wolfe will be the organist. Brant Perrigo, Michelle Perrigo, Jana Perrigo, Kristy Perrigo and Judy Perrigo will be vocalists. Honorary casket bearers will he Gene Inman, Lawrence Jontra, Donnie MacCready, Charles Pickell, Bill Rader and Bill Warden. Casket bearers will he Brian Perrigo, Brant Perrigo, Allen Moore, Scott Moore, Wade Crain and Eugene Clark.
A memorial has been established with the Greenlawn Cemetery Maintenance Fund. Contributions may he left with Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard, which has charge of arrangements.
Moore was born July 27, 1925, at the Eagle Head Ranch near Grenola, the son of Scott B. and Mary Elizabeth (Arhucklc) Moore. He attended Grenola High School. He married Bessic Ruthie Barnaby April 8, 1944, in Fredonia. In the early years of their marriage, he worked on a ranch near Howard.
He then spent several years working in pipeline construction, and they lived throughout several states. In 1962, they purchased a backhoe business and lived their remaining years in Grenola. She died Jan. 1, 1994.
He was a 4-H community leader and an active member of the Grenola Community Club. He was a former member of the Grenola Christian Church and a longtime member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.
Survivors include a son, Darrell Moore, Grenola; a daughtcr, Judy Perrigo, Grenola; a brother, J.O. Moore, Wynona, Okla.; a sister, Neomie Clark, Eureka: five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
MRS. HAZEL L. MORGAN
HOWARD — Hazel Louise Morgan, 89, died Sept. 23, 1995, at Howard Twilight Manor. Services were 11 a.m., today in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Howard. The Rev. Robin Haines officiated, and Louise Morgan sang “Amazing Grace.”
A memorial has been established with Howard Twilight Manor. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home, Howard.
Morgan was born May 24, 1906, in Indian territory near Renfrow, Okla., the daughter of George M. and Eva L. (Williams) Story. She attended rural schools in Oklahoma and graduated from Gage High School in 1925. After completing normal training at Woodward, Okla., she taught school near Gage for several year and was employed by Bell Telephone Co. in Wichita before moving to Elk County.
She married Elias Lawrence Morgan Dec. 25, 1930, in Howard. They Farmed northeast of Howard until 1970 when they retired an moved to town. He died March 6, 1986.
Morgan served as a 4-H project leader for many years and was member of the Loyal Lima Horn Demonstration Unit and Jolly Neighbors Quilting Club.
Survivors include two sons Curtis Morgan and Carl Morgan both of Howard: two daughters Virginia Tompkins, Scottsdale Ariz., and Jean Webster, Wichita 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grand children and two great-great grandchildren.

John Morgan Dead
John Morgan who has been ill at his home in the north part of Severy for the past month, died this morning at 6 o'clock.
Funeral arrangements have not been made, but the funeral will probably be held at the U. B. church sometime tomorrow, (Friday - Severy.
John Morgan lived for may years in Paw Paw townsip and was one of the very best men in Elk county. One of his sons, Bert Morgan is mail carrier on Route 5, out of this city.
MRS. MARY A. MORGAN - Submitted by L. Morgan
Mary (Eisley) Morgan
Mary Ann Eisley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Eisley, was born in Hocking county, Ohio, July 1, 1844 and departed this life January 11, 1929, aged 84 years, 6 months, and 10 days.
She was united in marriage to W. H. Morgan at Middlefork, Ohio, August 20, 1865. They were the parents of five children: Elizabeth Small, who departed this life June 18, 1921; J. T. Morgan of Howard; W. F. Morgan of Pomona, California; J. W. and D. B. Morgan of Howard. She had four sisters and three brothers, and of whom have passed on before. There are also twelve grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren living and one little granddaughter in heaven.
Mr. and Mrs. Morgan moved from Ohio to Labette county, Kansas in 1872, coming from there to the farm north of Howard in 1880, where they lived until moving to Howard in 1901. Here she lived with her husband who survives her until her life journey ended. Thus it will be seen that they were married nearly 64 years.
Sister Morgan was converted at the age of eighteen and united with the Methodist Episcopal church of which she was a faithful member to the last. After she was unable to attend the Sunday worship she would sit and read the word of God while the rest of the family would attend the church services. Her home, especially when they were still on the farm, was the stopping place of many minister, especially those younger men who were on the Howard circuit among whom was our present district superintendent, Dr. R. E. MacLean.
She was not only a kind and loving mother to her own family, but for more than a year she cared for a small nephew who was in very delicate health, but who was restored to health through her constant care. Later on she took two nieces, Mrs. A. C. Walter and Miss Viola Bobzien into her home and loving heart. Miss Bobzien lived in the home and cared for her in her old age and last sickness.
Mrs. Morgan always talked freely of her Christian life and her hope of the heavenly home and though in these later years, she has always been anxious to go, she would always say, "God's will, not mine."
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Sunday afternoon, January 13, 1929, conducted by Rev. E. E. Satterlee, pastor, and burial at Grace Lawn cemetery, Howard.
MR. MERRILL MORGAN - Submitted by L. Morgan
Merrill Morgan was born in LaFayette county, Indiana, on the 23d day of June, 1840. He came to Iowa with his parents at the age of two years and settled in Davis Co., and lived there until the Civil War broke out. He stayed on the farm until twenty=two years of age when he enlisted in the civil war in August 1862. His regiment was the Third Iowa Cavalry, Co. D, mustered out of the service in 1865, came home to Iowa and the family was broken up. His father had gone to Washington territory, three sisters being left near the old home. In the year of 1868 he was married to Mary Elizabeth Jones. To this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughter. Oldest son, W. A. Morgan of Red Rock, Kola., and youngest son, M. H. of Victoria, B.C., N. H. Morgan, J. W. Worgan, Etta Dershem, Bessie Morgan, Berthat Biddinger, Alta Morgan, all of Howard.
In 1880 Mr. Morgan moved with his family to Kansas near Howard, and lived there until Feb. 8th 1910, then moved to Howard, where he lived until his death which occurred Tuesday morning, June 27 at five a.m., age 71 years 4 days. Early in life he united with the Christian church in Floris, Iowa. In October, 1908 he united with the Congregational church at Lima. Over two ears ago he was stricken with paralysis, and never was able to walk or help himself since. In the time of his illness he was a patient sufferer till the end came. He was a member of the E. M. Stanton Post, G.A.R. His funeral services were conducted by Rev. S. N. Fear at the Christian church in Howard and the body was laid to rest in Grace Lawn cemetery. The sorrowing relatives and friends have the sympathy of all.

William H. Morgan
William Harrison Morgan was born in Harrison county, Ohio, May 17, 1843 and departed this life February 7, 1929, at the age of 85 years, 8 months, and 21 days.
When seven weeks old, he, with his parents, moved to Hocking county, Ohio, where he lived until grown.
He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Eisley at Middlefork, Ohio, August 20, 1865, who preceded him to her Heavenly home on January 11, 1929. Five children came to bless their home. One daughter, Mary Elizabeth Small, departed this life June 18, 1921; J. T. Morgan of Howard, W. F. Morgan of Pomona, California, J. W. Morgan and D. B. Morgan of Howard. Twelve grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren living and one little granddaughter in heaven. He is also survived by one brother, Joseph A. Morgan of Kimberly, Idaho, and Mrs. A. C. Walter and Miss Viola Bobzien, nieces of Mrs. Morgan, who were taken into their home when they were children, the latter remaining and caring for both Mr. and Mrs. Morgan in their old age. Both she and Mrs. Walter survive.

They lived together for nearly 64 years, being separated in death by only 27 days. He desired not to live longer but wished to join her on the other Shore.
He entered the Union army, October 7, 1861, enlisting in Company I, 58th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was honorably discharged January 14, 1865. He was in the battle of Shiloh and the sieges of Corinth and Vicksburg.
Mr. Morgan was converted at the age of sixteen and united with the Methodist Episcopal church of which he was a faithful, loyal member to the end of life. Soon after coming to Elk county he with a few others organized a Sunday school at the Orr school house where he did effective work. Later the Sunday school was moved to the Antioch school house. This was the beginning of the Antioch church. His efforts in the Sunday school and church were untiring, serving constantly either as teacher or superintendent of the Sunday school, also as class leader and other offices of the church. He was always ready to help and assist the young ministers who served on the Howard circuit and a welcome always awaited them at his home and fireside.
As a husband, father, neighbor, friends, he was a true man, always ready to help and serve others. His children love and serve his memory. He will answer to the roll call no more, but has gone on to join the Army of the Redeemed.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church at Howard, Saturday afternoon, February 9th, 1929, conducted by Rev. E. E. Satterlee, the pastor. Burial in Grace Lawn cemetery at Howard.
MR. IVAN "IKE" MORSE
Services for Ivan R “Ike" Morse, 71, of Elk City, will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Elk City Nazarene Church with the Rev. Terry Marta, pastor, officiating. Interment will he in Longton Cemetery with military graveside rites.
Friends may call at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home until 8 p.m. today, and from 8 am. until 9:30 a.m. Tuesday when the casket will be taken to the church. Memorials are suggested to the Elk City Nazarene Church.
Casketbearers will be Kevin and Brian Fowler, Vance and Nick Morse, Rusty Dye and Doug Burnett. Honorary casketbearers will be Josh, Bobby and Jimmy Morse, and Terry Michael and Jason Beiter.
Mr. Morse died Saturday at 9:07 a.m. at Mercy Hospital. He was born Jan. 19, 1925, at Howard, to Alphious and Sarah (Rutherford) Morse. He attended Howard schools, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and later engaged in the salvage business.
On Jan. 16, 1949, in Howard, he married Norma Penner and she survives.
Other survivors include four 3ons, Steve Morse, of Latham, Mark, Gordon and Rex Morse, all of Elk City; two daughters, Connie Dunham, Independence, and Teresa Fowler, Davenport, Iowa; a brother, Clyde "Bud" Morse, Brookfield, MO.; four sisters, Velda Sipes, Elkhart, Gertrude Comstock and Dora Lampton, both of Wichita, and Imogene McFadden, of Paris, Texas; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild and four stepgrandchlldren.
MRS. ESTHER I. MORTON
Esther I. Morton, 96, of 415 West First, Cherryvale, passed away at 9:57 a.m. Sunday, August 15, 1993, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.
Esther Irene Morton was born March 1, 1897, at Severy to George J. and Minnie (Giffin) Haas. She attended Severy schools.
On August 21, 1917, in Erie, she married John A, Morton and he preceeded her in death in 1960. The couple made their home on a farm near Fall River and also near Severy. In 1976, Mrs. Morton moved to Cherryvale.
Survivors include two sons, Pale Morton of Jacksonville, FL. and John Morton, Jr. of St. George Island, FL; a daughter Melba Tull of Cherryvale; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Southlawn Cemetery in Severy with (he Rev. Lex Fox, pastor of the First Baptist ch u rch of Cherryvale officiating.
MRS. GRACE MORTON
Mrs. R. G. (Grace) Morton, Memphis, Tennessee, a former Elk Falls resident, died Tuesday, November 14, in a hospital at Memphis. Mrs. Morton had been ill for about four months. She is survived by three sons, John and Roscoe of Louisiana, Richard of Mountain Home, Arkansas, and one daughter, Mrs. Jerry Wyatt, Memphis; one sister, Mrs. John Ransom, Elk Falls, and one brother, Fred A. Finley, Elk Falls.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 17, 2:00 p. m., at the Methodist church in Elk Falls. Watt Funeral Home, Moline, has charge of arrangements.
MR. JOHN W. MORTON
John W. Morton, a former resident of Elk Falls, died May 22,2001 at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, AR. He was 78 years of age. John was born June 20, 1922 at Oklarado, CO to Raymond Gilbert (Babe) and Grace Finley Morton. He graduated from Elk Falls High School in 1940.
He was a veteran of the US. Navy serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II and in the Korean Conflict.
On Jan. 23, l959 in Memphis, TN he married Adell Clark. She preceded him in death.
He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, Past President of the Mountain Home Rotary, a member of the Mountain Home Chamber of Commerce, Alley-White American Legion Post 50, Ozark V.F.W. Post 3245 and the Korean War Veterans Association. He was a member of the First Christian Church where he had been an Elder for many years.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan Schmidt of Millington, TN; two sons, Larry Joe Morton of Los Angeles, CA and Richard Morton of Bartlett, TN; a sister, Mary Sue Wyatt of Fort Worth, TX and a brother, Roscoe Morton of Frostproof, FL; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and a brother, Richard Morton.
Services for John W. Morton were held May 26 at the Roller Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Lee Nirschel officiating. Burial was in the Baxter Memorial Gardens of Mountain Home.
MRS. ETHEL M. MOSSMAN
Mrs. Ethel Mae Mossman, 57, owner and operator of Mossman Service in Oak Valley, died Friday afternoon in Mercy Hospital at Independence. She had been a patient there 10 days. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Potwin Methodist Church in Potwin with Rev. Jack Thomas of Otis, assisted by Rev. Gary L. Clark of Potwin Methodist Church officiating. Burial in McGill cemetery under the direction of the Crumrine Funeral Home of Longton.
Mrs. Móssman was born Jan 1, 1908 in Yancy Mills, Mo., to the late Henry Harrison and Mary Gertrude (Knost) Walton. She was married March 20, 1930 to Everett A. Mossman in Augusta. He survives at the home.
She was a member of the Methodist Church in Henryetta, Okla.,and the Rebekah Lodge in ElDorado. She was charter member of the Sunshine Grandmothers Club in Potwin.

OBITUARY -- MULLENDORE
Mettie Blanche Mullendore, daughter of Nathan and Ellen Killam, was born November 27, 1874, near Shelbyville, Illinois, and departed this life at Howard, Kansas, Friday, April 20, 1962.
She came to Elk county, Kansas, with her parents in 1883 and the family settled on a farm west of Howard. She attended Rock Creek and Union Center rural schools and two years at Howard public schools. As an early settler she experienced the hardships of rural life and accepted the same like a true pioneer.
She was married to David L. Mullendore, March 1, 1896, at Howard, Kansas. To this union two sons were born, Harold of Miami, Oklahoma and Noel of Howard. She was a mother in the true sense and provided this needed care and attention to some of Mr. Mullendore's younger brothers, who referred to her as their second mother. Mr. Mullendore preceded her in death in 1947.
She was a lifelong member of the Christian church and remained active until her death. She experienced sadness and trials in her life the same as others. She always found the necessary courage to recover and continue with patience and a smile because of her firm and abiding faith in her church and Saviour. She was a member of the Eastern Star, past president of the American Legion Auxiliary of Carter-Rader Post 149, and was county chairman of the Crippled Children Society since it was originally organized in 1927. She found this work most satisfying as she loved children and was deeply interested in assisting all those who needed extra care. She continued her regular visitations in this work, in company with an agency nurse, until a few months prior to her passing.
Besides her two sons she is survived by three grandsons, John A. Mullendore of St. Louis, Missouri; C. H. Mullendore, Jr., of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Carl Mullendore of Howard; seven great grandchildren, also numerous nephews and nieces, and many friends.
Funeral services were held in the chapel of the Spurrier-Watt Funeral Home on April 23, at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Clyde Markee of the Howard Christian church officiating. A duo, composed of Miss Carmelita Beaty and Mrs. Curtis Morgan, sang two songs, accompanied by Mrs. Arthur Cummins. Casket bearers were A.L. Criger, Virgil Munsinger, Ray L. Perkins, Dr. Frank R. Reid, Paul Moore, and Carl Russell.

MRS. MAE BEATRICE MUNDAY - Submitted by Freida Wells
Mae Beatrice Munday passed away Friday, September 10, 1999 at her home in Moline, Kansas. She was 83 years of age. Bea, as she was known, was born December 13, 1915 at Pollock, Missouri to Everett J. and Elma Pearl Lota (Reeves) Lane. The eldest of 12 children, Bea attended Hand-Houston rural school in Putnam County, Missouri and grew to womanhood in the Putnam County area.
On December 9, 1936, she married Hersel Freman Wells at Kirksville, Missouri and to this union was born a son, Leon Freeman and a daughter Judy Mae. In 1941, they moved to Sedan, Kansas were Bea worked in restaurants until opening her own restaurant business on the west edge of Sedan, which she operated for many years. Hersel and Bea were divorced in 1963 and she moved to Dexter, Kansas where she, again, went into the restaurant business.
On June 7, 1965, she married Eldon Lyle Munday at Wellington, Kansas and they continued to operate the restaurant in Dexter and run a pig farm until moving to McPherson and Elyria, Kansas where the operated the Mobil Oil bulk business. Bea was the bookkeeper for the bulk oil business for nine years. In 1978 they moved to Grenola, Kansas, then later moved to Moline where Bea was employed at Elk Manor Nursing Home.
Bea enjoyed fishing, traveling, crocheting, and motorcycle riding. She was a member of the Moline Christian Church and enjoyed studying the Bible and teaching Sunday school.
She is survived by her husband, Eldon; her son Leon Wells of Los Lunas, New Mexico; her step-son Tom Munday of Havana, Kansas; her daughter Judy Wolfe of Grenola; her step-daughters, Nancy Lawhorn of Copan, Oklahoma and Carol Artherson of Havana, Kansas; a brother Marshall Lane of Allerton, Iowa; her sisters Jean Bowman of Glendale, Arizona, Loraine Hoover of Gilman, Iowa, Eva Evans of Mesa, Arizona, Nellie Sticken of Graham, Missouri, and Juanita Shultz of Excelsior Springs, Missouri; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a stepson Richard Munday; her parents; a brother Bernard Lane; her sisters Mary Hoover, Ruth Helphrey, Genevie Wyant and Norma 'Billie' Lane ; and a granddaughter Karen Wells.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 13, 1999 at the Moline Christian Church with Rev. Dee Wolfe and Rev. Ted Smith officiating. Wanda Mills was the organist with Dee Wolfe singing "I'm Going Home" and the Wolfe Family chorus singing "Amazing Grace" The congregation sang "This World Is Not My Home." The casket bearers were Mike Artherton, Vince Boyd, Bill Lawhorn, Billy Lesher, Tom Munday, and Rob Wolfe. The honorary casket bearers were Joe Ames, Chase Boyd, John Foust, Travis Foust, Randy Goldston, Kenneth Knickerbocker, Gary Rierson, Dennis Shultz and David Wonser. Interment was held in the Greenlawn Cemetery at Grenola, Kansas. A memorial has been established with the Moline Christian Church. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
MR. JOHNNIE E. MURPHY - Submitted by Jerry Jackson
Murphy, Johnnie E., 94, retired farmer, died Tuesday, December 24, 1996. Service 2 p.m. Friday, Zimmerman Funeral Home.
Survivors: wife, Elsie; sons, James of Clearwater, Robert of Benton; daughter, Zelma Carriger of Topeka; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Memorial has been established with Howard, Kansas Church of Christ.
He married Mable Bratches in October of 1922 at Sedan, Kansas. Mable died in January of 1927 after giving birth to their daughter, Zelma and her twin, who died three days after birth.
On March 14, 1928 he married Elsie Arabell Francisco at Fredonia, Kansas and to this reunion were born two sons, James Edwin and Robert Dean. They owned and operated a farm in Elk County until 1957, and then moved to Moline, Kansas in 1958. He was employed at Mac’s Service in Moline, and was caretaker of the Moline Cemetery for several years.
Johnnie worked in carpentry, house painting and lawn care since retiring in 1965. He loved to sing to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and spent many hours in his flower and vegetable garden after moving to Howard in 1975.
He was one of the first elders of the Howard Church of Christ and enjoyed spending time with his wife and family.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie; his sons, James of Clearwater, Kansas and Robert of Benton, Kansas; his daughter, Zelmer Carriger of Topeka, Kansas; seven grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 27, 1996 at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard, Kansas with Tom Henry of Wichita, Kansas officiating. Betty Russell provided the organ music. Diana Carriger sang “How Beautiful Heaven Must Be” and “An Empty Mansion.” The casket bearers were Billy Carriger, Greg Carriger, Michael Gardner, Jerry Murphy, Robert Murphy Jr. and Johnnie Murphy. Interment was held in the Moline Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Howard Church of Christ. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard, Kansas.
MR. ROBERT D. MURPHY, SR. - Jerry Jackson
Robert Dean “Bob” Murphy, Sr., 66 of Towanda, died Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at a local nursing home facility. Celebration of Bob’s life is scheduled for 2 p. m. Monday, February 7, 2005 at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Towanda Cemetery in Towanda, Kansas.
He was born September 15, 1938, in Elk Fall, Kansas, the son of Johnnie E. and Elsie A. (Francisco) Murphy. He grew up in Elk County and attended school in Howard.
He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Clark on June 3, 1956 at the Church of Christ in Howard. Early in their marriage Bob and Ann moved around the state of Kansas before moving to Augusta, Kansas then to Towanda, Kansas in 1970. He started working in the construction business. Then he worked for Learjet as a fabricator for over 34 years before retiring in 1996.
He was a member of the Church of Christ of Howard, the Benton Lions Club, a volunteer for the Towanda Fire Department and the Machinist Union. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, zipping around on his moped and remodeling homes that Ann and him lived in.
Surviving include: his wife, Ann, of the home; two sons, Robert Murphy Jr. of Newton, Kansas and Jerry Murphy and wife of Towanda; two daughters, Debra and husband Stephen King of Benton and Cindy and Sheila Murphy Ward of Potwin, Kansas; one brother, James Murphy of Jenkins, Missouri; one sister, Zelma Carriger of Topeka, Kansas; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with Alzheimer’s Association. Contributions and condolences may be left with Kirby-Morris Funeral Home who is assisting the family with these arrangements.

Only Four More Veterans Remain in Cedar Vale and Community
William Butler Myers was born in Mt. Sterling, Brown County Ill in the year 1848, April 12 and died at his home in Cedar Vale, Kansas on December 29, 1925.
In the year of 1871 he was united in marriage to Lucy Lee of Maryville, Mo. And to this union 9 children were born, two dying n infancy.
In the year of 1870 they moved with their family to Kansas, locating in Cherryvale for a few years, later going to Grenola. He was construction foreman for the old L. L. & G. which is now the Santa Fe, and superintended the laying of the first railroad track in Grenola, Kansas. Leaving their employ in 1886 he moved to Cedar Vale entered the service of the Denver, Memphis and Atlantic, which is now know as the Missouri Pacific, being in their employment for 17 years. He then entered the service of the Santa Fe being in their employ for 12 years at the time he retired.
During the Civil War he enlisted as a volunteer in Co. F., 11th Regiment of Mo. Cavalry Volunteers. On the 20th day of December serving a period of 3 years and was given an honorable discharge. One of the striking things of his enlistment was his youth as he was only 15 years of age, and at 18 at the time of his discharge. He was commander of Post 99 at Cedar Vale for several years. He was also a member of the workman Lodge at Cedar Vale for 33 years. Several years ago Mr. Myers professed faith in Christ in a meeting held at the M. E. church. During his last days he thought much of the eternal things, and his conscious moments, joined in prayer with a minister of the gospel, and those around his bedside.
The old comrade “fought the good fight” Taps was sounded and he fell asleep, to awaken at the great Eternal bugle call.
He leaves to mourn his death, his beloved wife and seven children. Mrs. Mamie Grounds of Eaton, Kansas, Mrs. Ada Smith of Kingsley, Kansas, Mrs. Nellie Copeland, Sedan, Kansas, Mrs. Lucy Babb of Arkansas City, Mrs. Rena Mark, Tulsa, Okla., Mrs. Frona Alexander, Burden, George Myers, Arkansas City, Also 21 grand children and 12 great grandchildren and many friends.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Thursday, Dec. 31st, 1925 at 2:30 P. M. conducted by Dr. Walter E. Tanner, Chaplain of the American Legion Post and the Legion gave him the rites of a full military funeral service and burial. Interment was in the cedar Vale Cemetery.
