MRS. LULAVON FLOCK
In loving memory of our mother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend, we have gathered here this day to reflect on her life. Lulavon Belle was born into a family of humble and loving parentage on June 26, 1905 to her father, Marion, and mother, Margaret Louise (Wilson) Speer. She departed this life on June 9, 2001 at Howard Twilight Manor Nursing Home in Howard, KS. She was 95 years of age. She, as well as her two brothers and three sisters, were born in the family home one mile west of Fiat, Kansas in Elk County.
She received her primary education from the Rural Vale School, which was one and one half miles northeast of their home. Presently, neither Fiat nor the Rural Vale School now exit, just their memories. She enrolled in approximately six weeks of High School. This education ceased at the time of her mothers accident, long illness and death. All too soon, the formal education years were ended, as she was needed to assume the responsibilities of caring for her mother, sisters, brother and father, all in the home at the time.
At the age of thirteen, she was baptized into Christ becoming a member of his body the church. She remained faithful to the church all of her life. She was always active in its work, having taught Sunday School classes, cooked for the sick, sewed for children in orphanages and various other related responsibilities.
On April 15, 1926, she was married to John Forrest Flock at Sedan, KS. To this union were born four children, Mary Margaret, Ronald John, Beverly Lue and Donald Paul. John and Lulavon lived and reared their four children on a farm northeast of Howard on Indian Creek. They lived there until the spring of 1944. At that time, they moved to Winfield, KS, where John was associated with the Clark Alfalfa Milling Company. Following the loss of the Alfalfa Company due to a fire, they moved to Severy in the spring of 1958. While in Severy, John and his son, Ronald, developed an alfalfa milling company.
In the spring of 1970, John passed away. Lulavon remained in her home until 1988, when she broke her hip. Following surgery, she went to live with her daughter, Mary Margaret. In 1995, she suffered a stroke, from which she never recovered. Because of the need for special care, she lived at Twilight Manor of Howard. Recently, she suffered another stroke that paralyzed the muscles of the throat, making it impossible to swallow liquid or any form of food. She survived this condition for several days before passing away. Now, somewhere in the back of the sunset, where loveliness never dies, she now lives in a land of glory with the blue and gold skies and we who loved and knew her will cherish her memories, which will brighten our days and future in the years to come.
She was a kind, faithful and loving person, always doing and caring for others less fortunate and never considering herself. She was a wonderful homemaker and had many admirable traits, the most outstanding of these which we might mention are her love for the beauties of life, her flowers and plants inside her home and outside in her flower beds, writing poetry, baking goodies for a sick friend or neighbor. Regardless of the time of day or year, when going to her door one could hear her singing her favorite hymns. To know Lulavon was to know a servant of the Lord. To know her was to love her.
Her life has been, and remains, a tremendous challenge for all to follow. For now, her days of loneliness have surely ended. She has found peace with her Lord and the joy of being reunited with loved ones is now her crowning reward. She is survived by her children, Mary Margaret Hukie and her husband, Frank, Severy, KS, Clara Flock, Winfield, KS, Beverly Lue Fuqua, Peace Valley, MO, Donald Paul Flock and his wife, Judy, Rockport, ME, two sisters, Mrs. Mine Benest, Severy, KS and Mildred Lawman and her husband, Rex, Little Rock, AR, fourteen grandchildren, twentysix great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, a baby brother, her sister, Lois Clark, a brother, Paul, and recently she lost her son, Ronald John, Winfield.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2001, at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard, with Marty Taliaferro officiating. Florene Smith was organist. Recorded selections of Faithful Love, Amazing Grace and The Lord's Prayer were played. Casket bearers were Gil Flock, Jeff Flock, Kevin Flock, Ladd Flock, Andy Peterson, Dennis Peterson, Dana Taliaferro, Marty Taliaferro, Scott Taliaferro and Tim Taliaferro.
