Rural Vale, aka Fiat, Cemetery
Elk County, Kansas

The Rural Vale cemetery, also known as Fiat, is located in Paw Paw Township, S34-T28s-R11e. Driving north from Howard on Kansas highway #99 for approxiametly 6 miles, one needs to turn east on Rock road, drive 2 miles to road #18, turn north for 1 mile to Settler road, then two miles east on Settler to road #20. Road #20 is marked as having no outlet to the south, but the cemetery is about 1/2 mile south of the intersection of Settler and #20. The cemetery is no longer used and is neglected. The cemetery is enclosed, but it appears as if stock has been allowed to use the enclosure and many of the markers are knocked down.

Mildred Martin and Ila Beaumont read the cemetery in 1982 and I believe others may have read it later. It was read and photographed in January 2007 by Don Tharp.

The grave sites run in random directions and it appears as if some stones have been moved after being knocked down. So, other than listing them in alphabetical order, there has been no attempt to organize the listing.

Pictures of the grave markers are available as .jpg files. If you would like a picture, one can be forwarded to you free of charge via an email attachment. However, be aware that inscriptions on some markers are not legible or very difficult to read just as some are when viewed at the cemetery.
