Boston once held the distinction of being the elected county seat of old Howard County, but only briefly as the election was declared illegal sometime later, triggering the "Boston War". The community disappeared after Howard County was divided into Elk and Chautauqua. There are few reminders of its existence, this small cemetery being one of them.
Mrs. Martin in her reading of the cemetery stated, "Following is a list of names copied from tombstones still remaining in what was once a Catholic cemetery located in Old Boston. The cemetery was closed and relocated at the present Mt. Olivet cemetery southeast of Moline, Kansas on Hwy. 99. Many of the deceased were reinterred but at least the few below were left at Old Boston. Most of these stones lie flat and are encased in cement, probably to protect them after the land was turned back to pasture. The former cemetery is located on the Hugh Walker estate."
The Chautauqua County Historical and Genealogical Society photographed the markers remaining in the cemetery in the spring of 2006 and have contributed corrections and additional information to this listing.
