  Belle Reid Yates, was born in Drakesville, Iowa, July 31, 1860, daughter of William Andrew And Martha Jane (Shackelford) Fouts.
  William Andrew Fouts, who was born in Ohio, March 5, 1814, drove a team of oxen to California in 1840, and in 1864 pioneered in the Black Hills.  He died at Moline, Kansas, in October 1901.  His ancestry was Pennsylvania Dutch.
  Martha Jane Shackelford was born in Terre Haute, December 27, 1835, and died at Moline, January 27, 1904.  Her father, James Shackelford, was born in Lexington, Kentucky, April 9, 1816.  In 1840 he united with the Christian Church under Alexander McVey.
  At the age of 16, Belle Fouts received her first certificate and taught eight years. She has been a notary public for 23 years, and is registered in Washington, D.C., as a pension attorney.  She is a member of the National Press Association, and at the present time is minister of the First Christian church of Grenola.
  On September 9, 1883, she was married to Duncan McKay Reid at Moline.  Mr. Reid, whose father was born in Scotland, was born in New York City, November 25, 1835, and died at Grenola, January 27, 1901.   He served in Company A, Yates Sharpshooters, 64th Illinois Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.  To them was born one son, Frank L., October 14, 1885, who married Ivy Logsdon.  He operates The Oasis at Winfield and is a jeweler and optician.  He has one son, Dwain M., who is a student at Southwestern College.
  On August 12, 1906, Mrs. Reid was married to Abram Yates.  Mr. Yates was born in New York State, October 7, 1844, and died at Grenola, January 7, 1920.  He was a hardware merchant and served as mayor or Grenola.
  Mrs. Yates preached for several years prior to her ordination in March 1912, and until 1922 held a pastorate at Grenola.  At that time she became pastor at Elk City.  There she remained until 1926 when she became ill.  On January 1, 1928, she again became pastor of Grenola, and during her service has received into the church 353 persons, preached 289 funerals and married 41 couples.
  Mrs. Yates is a writer for the Grenola Gazette, the Winfield Courier and the Independence Reporter.  She has traveled extensively, having visited nearly every state in the union.  At the present time she resides in the same home into which she moved in 1883 as a bride. She is a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Rebekahs, in which she has filled all chairs.   Her other memberships include the Woman's Relief Corps, the Red Cross, the First Christian Church, and the Study Club.  She is extremely fond of motoring.  Her hobby is reading.  (Photograph in Album)
