Ulysses Grant Sutton, editor and publisher of the Moline
Advance, was born at Fairbury, Illinois, January 10, 1868, son of
Thomas Cyrus and Eliza Ann (Starkey) Sutton. Thomas Cyrus Sutton
was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, October 5, 1835. He was a
farmer. His death occurred at Emporia, Kansas, October 19,
1925. His mother was of German, and his father of English
descent. Eliza Ann Starkey was born in Coshocton County, Ohio,
September 13, 1840, and died at Emporia, July 27, 1931. Her
father was of Swiss descent and her mother of the Hanks family and a
cousin of Abraham Lincoln.
Ulysses Grant Sutton attended State Teachers College at Emporia,
graduating in 1896, and was afterward a student at Northwestern
University. He has been a resident of Kansas for the past 47
years and in addition to his newspaper business, is a real estate
agent. He is a Republican.
On April 25, 1901, he was married to Eleanor Doig at Fort Scott,
Kansas. Mrs. Sutton was born at Washington, Iowa, June 24,
1868. Her ancestry is Scotch-Irish.
Mr. Sutton is a Christian, a member of the Chamber of Commerce
and the Odd Fellows. His hobbies are motoring and hiking.
