Hubert Horning, lawyer and county attorney of Elk County,
Kansas, was born in Stewartsville, Missouri, January 26, 1897. He
is the son of Henry and Katherine (Urban) Horning, the former a native
of Hamilton, Ohio, born July 2, 1858. Henry Horning was a farmer
and a member of the school board for 30 years, and died at Moline,
Kansas, April 9, 1930. He was the son of Louis and Katherine
Horning, who emigrated from Germany to the United States about
1852. Katherine Urban was born in wilkesbarre, Pennsylvania,
August 8, 1868, daughter of John and Katherine Urban who came to the
United States from Germany about 1854.
Hubert Horning attended district school in Elk county,
Kansas, and in 1916 was graduated from the Moline High School. He
received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kansas in
1823 and his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1925. He was there a
member of Alpha Kappa Psi, Phi Delta Phi, and on the Dean's Honor Roll.
Admnitted to the practice of law on June 18, 1925, Mr. Horning
was made deputy county attorney November 20, 1928 and served until
January 1929, at which time he was elected county attorney serving
until January 1931. He was re-elected in January 1931, to serve
until January 1933.
His marriage to Jessie Cecelia Bond was solemnized at El Dorado,
Kansas, June 26, 1930. Mrs. Horning was born at Moline, August
14, 1902, and is the daughter of Frank W. and Hattie (Zuck) Bond, of
early American stock.
During the World War, Mr Horning was a private in the signal
corps. He is a member of the American Legion, the Kansas Bar
Association, the Howard Commercial Club, the Red Cross, and the
Disciples of Christ Church.
