Charles William Fleak, merchant, banker, and rancher, was born
in Knox County, Missouri, September 28, 1856, son of william L.B. and
Maria (Sens) Fleak. The father was born in Bartholomew County,
Indiana, September 27, 1829, and died in Kirksville, Missouri, in June
1911. He was a farmer and stockman of English descent, who served
four years in the Civil War. His wife, Maria, was born in
Maryland, April 3, 1834, and died at Kirksville, June 15, 1922.
Her ancestry was German.
Charles William Fleak attended country school in Knox county,
Missouri and for a number of years in younger life was a farmer.
He engaged in the mercantile business for 40 years and from 1914 until
1920 was president of the First National Bank at which he has been a
director since 1908. At the present time he is a merchant and
rancher. He is a Republican.
On October 16, 1877, he was married to Laura B. Wiley in Knox
County. She was born in that county, on December 3, 1858.
They have one son, Lester, born February 22, 1879, who is married to
Edith Scott. She is the daughter of Luther and Henrietta (Allen)
Scott, the former of whom was a lawyer at Howard, Kansas.
Mr. Fleak is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the
Chamber of Commerce, the Masons (32nd degree) and the Odd Fellows of
which he has been a member for the past 40 years. His favorite
diversion is reading.
