James Everet Dancy, editor and publisher, has been in the
newspaper business practically all his life. He was born at
Joplin, Missouri, March 4, 1875, son of William Henderson and Frances
Sybil (Servis) Dancy. The father was born at Reddes River,
North Carolina, July 20, 1834, and died at Republic, Kansas, November
17, 1913.
He served with Company H, 17th Illinois Infantry in the Civil
War, and re-enlisted as a spy and scout until 1862. He was
captured, imprisoned, exchanged and re-enlisted in Company B, 132nd
Illinois Infantry and re-enlisted in 1864 in the 23rd Illinois
Infantry. He was a farmer until his death. His father's
grandfather, John Dancy, came from Ireland in 1760. His wife was
Ann Morgan.
Frances Sybil Service was born at Bournville, Ohio, May 13,
1834, and died at Republic, Kansas, March 8, 1897. She was the
daughter of Charles Service and Abigail Bassett. Charles was the
son of Jacob and Nancy White Service, who was born in New Jersey in
1808.
Mr. Dancy attended country school at Pleasant Grove and has
since that time owned newspapers at cawker City, Minneola, Ford and
Grenola, Kansas. At the present time he is the editor and
publisher of the Grenola Gazette. He is a Republican.
On May 10, 1907, he was married to Marye Abbie Lacey at Oklahoma
City. She was born at Villisca, Iowa, September 8, 1878, and is
the daughter of James Lacey of Republic, Kansas. To them the
following children were born: Reece, March 1, 1911, who died
March 13, 1921; M. Irene, on April 3, 1909, who married Herschel
Whitehill of Farragut, Iowa; William, born May 30, 1913, and Frances
Elvira, born March 1, 1916, died March 5, 1916. William is
a student at civil engineering at Kansas State Teachers College at
Pittsburg.
From June 27, 1904 until November 13, 1905, Mr. Dancy served
with the 17th Battery Field Artillery in the Philippine Islands and was
promoted to the rank of corporal and that of first class gunner.
He is a member of Grenola First Methodist Church, the Kansas State
Press Association, the city council of Grenola and the Masons. He
devotes much of his leisure time to reading. (Photograph in
