James Terrell Burford, stockman and farmer, was born in
Marshfield, Missouri, June 12, 1859, son of Hugh Lawson and Eliza Jane
(Arnold) Burford.
Hugh Lawson Burford, a stockman and farmer also, was born
in Tennessee, October 6, 1835. He died at Marshfield, January 30,
1915. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and
afterwards served as county judge of Webster county, Missouri.
His ancestry was Scotch, Irish, and German.
Eliza Jane Arnold was born in Springfield, Missouri, March
27, 1839 and died at Marshfield, November 4, 1922. Her ancestry
was English and Welsh.
Educated in public and high school, James Terrell Burford
immediately engaged in farming and stock raising. He has handled
nearly every kind of stock, his favorite business having been the
purchasing and sale of horses and mules throughout the United
States. He is a Democrat, and has always been active in the work
of his party. Mr. Burford has been in nearly every state in the
Union.
On December 17, 1884, he was married to Harriett Elizabeth
Highfill at Fairgrove, Missouri. Mrs. Burford whose parents came
from Kentucky, was born in Fairgrove, November 8, 1861. She is
the daughter of Elijah S. and Jane (Ezell) Highfill. There
are five children; Roy, born October 25, 1885; Linnie, July 18, 1888;
Guy, June 15, 1891; Glenn, August 5, 1893; and Paul, April 20,
1895. Mr. and Mrs. Burford had three sons, who served in the
World War, two of them overseas.
