Elk County was formed in 1875 when Howard County was split in two, creating both Elk and Chautauqua counties. It is named after the stream which runs through it.
Howard is the county seat; besides the cities listed at the left, the communities of Busby, Oak Valley and Upola lie within the boundaries of Elk County.
