Elihu Hawkins Tharp, was born in Illinois in November 9, 1833, and died at his home near Colfax, Kansas, March 1, 1920, aged 87 years, 3 months, 21 days.
When quite young, he moved to Iowa with his parents. At this place he was united in marriage to Elizabeth HOGAN. He is survived by three sons and one daughter; his wife having preceded him four years ago.
He came to Kansas in an early day, having lived in Chautauqua County 48 years. "Grandpa Tharp" as he was called was one of the sturdy pioneers who helped to blaze the trail for citizenship in this country. He was ambitious and prosperous in early life, but about 30 years ago was stricken with paralysis which greatly impaired his usefulness, but having remarkable vitality he succeeded in getting around and caring for himself until recent years. His affliction he bore with patience.
He was not a member of any church but believe in the Divinity of Christ and a full gospel for which Christ died. Some time before his death he requested that his Grandson, E. E. CORNUE of this city, conduct his funeral services, which he did, taking for his text, Job 2-10.
The remains were laid to rest in West Liberty Cemetery by the side of his wife.
Elizabeth (HOGAN) THARP, daughter of William and Jane HOGAN was born in Putman Co., IND., Feb. 16, 1837, and died Nov. 17, 1915, age 78 years, 9 month, and 1 day.
She was united in marriage to Elihu H. THARP, Nov. 9, 1854 in Indiana and in 1855, they moved to IOWA, and from there they came to Kansas in 1860 and have lived here every since. To this union were born eleven children, six of whom died in childhood and a daughter Hattie died seven years ago (Harriet Janett THARP 20 Mar 1907).
She leaves to mourn her demise her aged and faithful companion, E. H. THARP, one daughter Mrs. Mary J. WHISTLER and three sons W. R. THARP; F. E. THARP and A. M. THARP, two sisters and two brothers, Emma FRISBIE and T. J. HOGAN of Grafton and Mrs. V. WARNKEY of Pleasanton, Kansas, eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, besides other distant relatives and friends.
She has been in feeble health for a number of years but bore all of her afflictions patiently, having a good hope through grace in the Savior. She was not a member of the visible organization of the church but gave every evidence by her conversation that she had been with Jesus and we believe she was in the full realization of the blessings of the resurrection of the dead in Jesus Christ.
She was heard to say the words that she had finished her work and had nothing more to do, for she thought that she had a humble home in heaven for her. Her father was an old Baptist minister and that was her belief.
