MRS. ZELLA SEARS
Zella Scars, age 89, of Sedan, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan.
The oldest of four children born to Robert and Effie (Reynolds) Rains, who preceded her in death. Born Jan. 1, 1921 in Dodge City, Kan., she lived most of her childhood in Caney.
It was during her teen-aged years that she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and was baptized in the Christian Church. Having gone through the Great Depression, the family endured many hardships; Zella's way of helping was selling her mother's home-made doughnuts and bread on the streets of Caney. Following high school, Zella was employed as a cook at the Mullendore Ranch, where she met her future husband Floyd Sears. They lived their entire married life on a farm in Northern Osage County, Okla., where they raised their five children.
Zella assumed the role of farmer's wife and mother well, working side-by-side with Floyd on their farm. Following Floyd's death in 1982, she worked at the Emmett Kelley Museum in Sedan, which she very much enjoyed until physical disabilities prevented such employment. For several years she has been home-bound due to physical restraints.
These past months she has been a resident at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan. We as a family would like to thank the staff for the wonderful care she received. In many ways she lived life to the fullest that she possibly could until she went to sleep Wednesday morning.
She is survived by her five children, Darlene Anderson and her husband Burl, Gene Sears and wife Pattie all of Wichita; Sue Meyer and husband Delbert of Stilwell, Okla.; Cheryl Collins and husband Jerry of Pawhuska, Okla., and Steve Sears and wife Lisa of rural Osage County, Okla.; fifteen grandchildren: Jeff Anderson, Zanesville, Ohio, Tammy Southards, Green Bay, Wisc., Sheila Manion, Joe, Jason and Matt Sears, Valley Center, Kan., Brian Sears of Wichita, Justin Lewis, Mountainburg, Ark., and Troy Lewis of Berryville, Ark., Chandra Patterson, Tulsa, Okla., Amber Smith, Nowata, Okla., Chelsa Norris, rural Osage County, Okla., Aaron and Clinton Sears, Sedan, and Samuel Sears of Overland Park, Kan.; thirty-one great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild: her only sister Alpha Fowler of Byron Center, Mich., and sister's-in-law Inez and Marge Rains of Wichita.
Besides her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by brothers, Robert, Jr., and Richard.
Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, July 3, 2010 at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Elgin, with Pastor John Warring officiating.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Emmett Kelley Museum and these remembrances may be left in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361. To leave a message for the family, please visit www.dwbfh.com. David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan is in charge of arrangements.
The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p. m. at the Christian church in Peru Conducted by the pastor Rev. J. B. Brown. Six young men were the pall bearers and two young ladies the flower bearers. The unusually large crowd of sympathetic friends told of the high esteem the entire community had for Ralph and the Sebree family. The florar offerings were many and beautiful. Burial was made in Sunnyside cemetery beside his brother Samuel who died in infancy. The following poem given by Rev. Brown seemed to be most suitable as Ralph’s going was so sudden and such a shock to his grief atricken parents and brothers and sisters. Besides his parents Ralph leaves two brothers, Harry and Robert; four sisters, Hazel, Lois. Gladys and Ethel, all of the home address, and Mrs. Delyte Jacks of Caney and a host of friends.
He bade no one a last farewell,
He said good bye to none,
His loving heart had ceased to beat
And, before we knew it he was gone,
His cheerful smile and kindly ways

Harry Shreve of Sedan Found Dead in Winfield Hotel Sedan, Feb.9—Harry Shreve, about 50, for several years a resident of Sedan and well known among oil men in this section as a driller and later as an oil well shooter, was found dead in a hotel room at Winfield at 11 o’c1ock this morning. Details of his death has not been learned here this afternoon, but it was presumed he had succumbed to an attack of heart trouble or apoplexy. He was said to have suffered previously from high blood pressure.
H. H. SHREVE DEAD
End Came Suddenly and Without Warning at Winfield Monday Night.
The truth of the quotation that “In the midst of life we are in death,” was forcibly brought home to the people of this community Tuesday forenoon when the sudden and unexpected death of Harry H. Shreve was announced.
His death caused by apoplexy resulting from high blood pressure occurred at the Evans rooming house in Winfield and was not discovered until about 9 o’clock, when his failure to appear from his room until the late hour resulted in the room being entered by the proprietor. Mr. Shreve’s lifeless body was found bearing evidence that he had been dead for several hours. It was about 11 o’clock when word of his death reached Sedan notifying relatives.
Mr. Shreve had spent the day Monday in the oil field near Burden on duties connected with his job as an oil well shooter. W. E. Donaldson, an employee of the American Glycerin Company located at Winfield, accompanied him on the day’s work. Mr. Shreve registered at the Evans rooming house where he always stayed when in Winfield about 6 o’clock Monday evening, according to best judgment of the proprietor as to the time. He immediately went to his room and so far as was observed or is known did act leave it again.
Members of his family and doctors whom he had consulted knew that he was a victim of high blood pressure. However he never complained and few outside of that limited circle ever suspected otherwise than that he was in the best of robust health which his outward appearance indicated. Mr. Donaldson stated that he made no complaint of illness or suffering during the time they were together Monday.
Deceased was born at Riceville Pennsylvania, April 15th, 1872, a son of James and Anna-Powell Shreve. His mother died when he was 4 years old. After her death he was provided a home and paternal care until his maturity by Mr. and Mrs. Sam Graham who later moved to Kansas and are well known at Sedan and Peru. Thirty years of his early life were spent in West Virginia, after which he moved to Kansas and secured work in the oil fields during the early oil discoveries in this county, being located for different periods at Caney, Peru and Sedan. He drilled one of the first wells in this community, on the Dennis farm. In following his occupation as driller he had worked in California, Illinois, Mexico, Texas, and also in the copper fields of Utah. He had been in the employ of the American Glycerin Company for the past 20 years.
On June 19th, 1904, he was married to Miss Della Drake of Sedan. To this union three children were born who in addition to his widow survive him.
