MRS. LUELLA M. MILLER - Submitted by Curtis Huffman
Death Came May 17 to a Young Woman Near Cedar Vale.
Luella May Miller, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frances Huffman, died at her home seven miles northeast of Cedar Vale May 17 at 11 a. m. after an illness of two weeks. Her suffering was great but her sweet gentle spirit bore it with patience. Everything possible was done to relieve her suffering and restore her to health, but all to no avail. She grew weaker and weaker until the loving heart ceased to beat and the lips failed to respond to the loved ones around her.
Being the youngest child of a family of eleven and rather delicate all her life, she was the pet of the home. The fond parents almost worshiped her, while the brothers and sisters loved her with a devotion that is seldom equaled.
She was married to Grover N. Miller May 3, 1909, who took her to the home of his parents, where she was received and loved as one of their own children. Their love grew deeper each day until when they were called on to give her up their grief seemed as great as for one of their own children. But the blow falls the heaviest on the sorrowing husband who is crushed beneath the burden of his great loss. Everywhere he sees the work of her loving hands and is reminded that the one who made his life so happy for one short year is gone forever. She leaves an infant daughter, husband, father, mother, eight brothers and one sister and her husband's father, mother and sister to mourn her loss. They were all present at her bedside but three of the brothers, Charles of Oklahoma and George and Robert of New Mexico. Charles arrived in time to hear the funeral sermon and bid her a last farewell.
The deceased was born April 21, 1889 near Leeds, Chautauqua county and was at the time of her death 21 years and 26 days old. The funeral was preached at the Round Mound church by Bro. Urban to a large congregation. The text was Rev. 14-15. Her favorite song "Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown?" was sung. The day before she left us she said to her mother who was sitting beside her "I am so happy. I am out on the ocean sailing and feel no pain." Her mother replied, "I have been praying that you might get easy. We should thank your heavenly father." She looked up in her mother's face with a smile and said "Yes."
We laid her to rest in the Round Mound cemetery to await the resurrection, when Jesus will come and bring her spirit with him.
"We watched her go down to the cold solemn tide
The still quiet boatman kept close to her side;
We caught the dull dip of the deep muffled oar,
As he bore her away to the echoless shore.
But she will ne'er return to bless us again.
We are left to mourn her for she has passed away;
Yet we know of a land where there is no decay;
Where linked and forever is love is golden chain,
And parting words chill us, no never again."
-- One who knew her all her life.

MR. NELSON HARDIN MILLER - Submitted by Anonymous
The fraility of life and the uncertainty of human plans were demonstrated Wednesday morning July 25, 1934 when N. H. Miller who lived seven miles northeast of Cedar Vale died unexpectedly in the Adam Mercantile Company office as result of a heart attack, being 66 years, 11 months and 10 days old.
He had accompanied his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Grover Miller and daughters to town that morning and seemed in his usual health, visiting and jovial with his friends.
Nelson Hardin Miller, one of a family of seven children, was born to Tome and Cecilia Miller August 15, 1847 near Hardingburg, Breckinridge County, Kentucky and lived there until he was nine years of age when he moved with his parents, three brothers and three sisters to Kirksville, Missouri.
He was married to Elizabeth Jan Denlinger March 3, 1870 at Callao, Mo. To this union six children were born, one son and one daughter dying in infancy. Their oldest child Etta passed away August 13, 1884.
After a few years residence there he and his family moved to Red Oak, Montgomery County, Iowa; later he moved near Emerson Mills County, Iowa, where he owned a fine eight acre farm.
In the spring of 1883, he and Willard Campbell came to Kansas to seek a location for stock raising and general farming. He was so enraptured by the prospects that in November of the same year, he with his family, live stock and implements arrived in Kansas and settled on the farm where he resided at the time of his death, enduring the hardships of pioneers.
Mr. Miller settled in the Liberty district and was for many years an active member or the school board and was instrumental in getting the present structure built. So the good begun by thee shall onward flow.
He organized Farmers Alliances in Elk, Chautauqua, Greenwood and Wilson counties. He was a member of the A. H. T. A. Lodge and served as president of that order for 15 years. He always advocated law and order. He also was a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge for about 20 years. He was superintendent for many years of the Sunday school held at Liberty school house. At one time he belonged to the Church of Christ but in later years he believed in the Latter Day Saints. He read his Bible daily and was a divine believer in the maker of all good things. Among his daily sayings were "Christ the same yesterday, today, tomorrow and forever." "Be kind, keep your mind in harmony with God and all will be well."
¯ The life of N. H. Miller has been a silent benediction to the citizens of this community and almost without knowing it enjoyed the gracious confidence and esteem of his neighbors. Until the end his mind was active in a business way and with plans for the future. One of the phases of his life work he moved through life from youth, middle age and down the slope of declining years at a tangent turning neither to the right nor to the left from the straight way.
In his going the home which he loved has suffered a great loss, the community a good and highly respected citizen.
He leaves to mourn his going, his devoted wife, two sons, Grover and Tom and one daughter, Mrs. Maggie Rowland, besides nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

In Memory of Little Roy Aden Mills
We can hardly bear to think of it that way,
Only a few days. It seems but yesterday,
A wee little bundle with eyes, nose and ears
Came to stay with us, we thought for years.
Came as a gift from the heaven above
To live with us and share our love,
A son and daughter, our happiness was complete,
No others with ours could ever complete.
We watched over you and gave you all our love.
Just like our Father in the heaven above,
And prayed that he who shared our joys and tears
Ever guide your footsteps in the following years.
God gave you, God took you, God keep you,
But we know, though we had to give you,
So sweet, so innocent, with all your charms
Though your little life is ended, you rest safe in his arms.
