MRS. EMMER MARTIN - January 12, 1930

Funeral Services Conducted by Rev. J. W. Campbell Wednesday
The funeral services for Mrs. Marshall Martin who died at the Winfield hospital Sunday at noon were held at the Methodist church in Sedan Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Mrs. Martin had not been in the best of health for some time and was taken to the hospital for an operation more than a week ago. The operation was performed on Tuesday and it was thought that she had a chance of recovery but her condition became worse until death resuted Sunday.

The body was returned to Sedan by the Westlake Funeral Home where it lay in state until the funeral on Wednesday. Rev. J. W. Campbell pastor of the Methodist church was in charge of the services and interment was in Greenwood cemetery.

Mrs. Emmer Brown-Martin was born at Brown’s Crossroads, Kentucky, on August 10, 1867. When just a little girl she came west with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hezekiah Brown, who settled in the east part of Chautauqua county, Kansas, about twelve miles east of Sedan. It was here that Mrs. Martin grew to womanhood.

She was united in marriage to M. U. L. Martin, who lived about six miles east of Sedan, on March 1, 1899. For over thirty years she walked side by side with her companion, to whom she proved to be a worthy helpmeet, sharing his joys and sorrows and playing the part of a real mother to her step-son, Otto Martin.

Mrs. Martin has been in poor health for some time. But she bore her affliction cheerfully always hopeful that whatever her outcome might be, it would be her lot and for the best. Thus the early part of last week she was taken to St. Mary’s hospital, Winfield, Kansas, where an operation was performed for hernia. Apparently the operation was a success but in a few days afterwards, complications set in which were more than the physical body could bear and the spirit took its departure from the tabernacle of clay which it inhabited just at the noon hour last Sunday, January 12, 1930. She was aged 62 years, five months and two days.

Mrs. Martin has always lived in Chautauqua county since her parents settled here back in the year 1873. She was a woman of upright character, possessing a pleasing personality and a genial disposition. Thus having lived in the county since a little girl, she had a wide acquaintance and enjoyed the friendship of all who knew her. She was a kind friend and a good neighbor. To know her was to like her. Now that she has gone, she will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her husband, M. U. L. Martin and son, Otto of Sedan; one brother, Emmett A. Brown, twelve miles east of Sedan; a half brother, R. F. Meadows, of Jennings, Oklahoma; two half sisters, Mrs. Annie E. Neal of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Mrs. S. T. Van Sandzt of Oakland, California; other relatives and a host of friends.

MRS JOSEPHINE (LAYTON)(SNEED) MARTIN - Submitted by Pat Eldredge

A large concourse of people assembled at the Hewins First Baptist church Sunday, 1:30 p.m. Feb. 24 to assist in the last sad rites and to mingle their sympathy, tears and prayers with the relativies and friends of Mrs. Josephine Martin who died of consumption at her home at 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Martin was born in Kansas in 1859 and came with her parents to Chautauqua county in 1871 and settled on what is now known as the W. B. Hann property. She was married to Mr. Sneed and went with him to Missouri. He died March 5, 1885 and she then returned to Kansas with her children Charles and Jamel and in Aug., 1885 she was married to Pleas Martin. Several children were born to them of whom only two, George and Jerrel, her husband and other two sons survive her. She also leaves three brothers and one sister to mourn her loss.

Rev. Crego delivered the funeral address in his usual impressive style. He first recited a few lines of poetry and afterwards selected his text from the shortest verse in the Bible "Jesus wept", where he portrayed so beautifully the sympathy and love of our Saviour for sorrowing humanity. One could feel that it is sweet to sleep as did Lazarus while his and our Saviour wept with his sorrowing sisters as he also weeps with our friends for a season. Then as to Lazarus, he will say "arise, come forth, eternal happiness is thine."

The choir sang a few well chosen songs and as they rendered softly, "Farewell Mother", it pierced the heart and we felt the vibration of tender sympathy and as our mind floated out we reached the shore of the Jordan where we saw the silver waves and heard the "plash plash" of the spirit oar as the heavenly bark touched the eternal shore where the spirit should be at everlasting rest.

[NOTE BY PAT ELDREDGE: The two Martin children who lived to adulthood were George Henry and Jewel Henry. (not Jerrel as stated in her obit.) Also Pleasant Henry Martin, her husband, is buried in Ozro Cemetery, evidently in unmarked grave. He was born 1860/6l in Tennessee and died November 24, 1920, per his Great Grandson, Billie J. Martin, a descendant of Jewel Henry Martin, aka "Bob". Also, Josephine's parents were George W (b. 1834) and V. America (b. 1840). Josephine's family lived in Jefferson Co., KS in the 1860 census.]
