Martha Melrose was born August 24, 1849, near Albion, Ill. She departed this life February 28, 1926, at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 4 days. When 14 years of age she confessed Christ as her Savior and united with the M.E. church. At the age of 18 she was united in marriage with Francis Huffman. To this union eleven children were born. Three of them and her husband preceded her to that better home. Soon after her marriage she and her husband united with the United Brethren church and she has lived a very devoted Christian life. To know her was to love her. Always meek, gentle and kind, so much like the Christ she loved. Since the death of her companion, thirteen years ago, she has made her home with her only daughter, Mrs. Ida Binyon. She had been in poor health for the past three years, and for the last five months suffered immensely, but patient through it all; praying that she she might be asent from the body and present with the Lord. Near the end she called her loved ones around her and asked them to meet her in heaven. And the day before her departure she sang in a clear, sweet voice:
All that loving hands could do was done by her children. Several of them were constantly by her bedside until the end came. She often requested her loved ones not to grieve when she had gone home. They have that comforting assurance that she is resting in that place her Savior has gone to prepare, so beautiful that eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man what God hath prepared for them that love Him.
She leaves to sorrow eight children, forty-two grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, other relatives and a multitude of friends.

The son is about 25 years of age and until recent months had been employed by the Union Pacific railroad company at Marysville. Rev. When she was 12 years of age she began teaching a Sunday school class, and from that time until her death continued in this her favorite work of the church. Her favorite classes were those of girls and young women and many such classes have felt her influence in the various charges her husband has served.
She was the first secretary of the Epworth League in her home church, held various district and state offices for a number of years. Much of her life was spent in the organization of Junior and Senior Leauges. She had that special gift of inspiring confidence of young people and was never known to betray that confidence. Today in this congregation there are Christians who owe much of their experience to the instruction they received while associated with Mrs. Hugg. For years she was in demand at all state and district conventions as a speaker on topics for young folks. It was at the last Annual Conference when she was assigned place on the program at the banquet held each year for the ministers wives that Mrs. Waldorf paid her the compliment that never had she heard a more beautiful talk on the subject of "The Storm" which had to do with the life of a minister.
It was in the serving at the difficult and obscure places where Mrs. Hugg received her greteat joy. She never had the desire to be president of organizations but it was the secretaryship or serving on the special cornmittees which many dislike that she received her special blessing. In the Missionary societies both home and foreign influence was always felt in every community where she lived.
That she kept the love and sympathy of young girls was manifested in the last few days of her illness when hundreds of letters poured into the hospital telling her what her life had meant to so many. The nurses of the hospital came to her and volunteered to do extra work so great was their love for her.
Her recreation in life was literature. Hundreds of poems and hymns had she memorized and would often quote from the classics the quotation that so appropriately fit the occasion. Not a Sunday went by in her class that she did not recite some poem that fit into the life of her students.
There is left to mourn her loss besides her husband, one son, one sister Miss Elizabeth Champion, Millville, New Jersey, one brother Frank Champion, Los Angeles, California and a host of friends.
The last conscious moments of Mrs. Hugg’s life she spent in quoting from the hymn “Jesus Saviour Pilot Me” and Tennyson’s poem “Crossing the Bar.” Over and over again she repeated:
“Sunset and Evening Star, And one clear call for me, And may there be no moaning of The bar, When I put out to Sea."

A FATAL ACCIDENT
CLARENCE HUNT RECEIVES FATAL INJURIES WHILE WORKING IN THE ELGIN FIELD
Tuesday near the noon hour this community was shocked to hear that Clarence Hunt, had been seriously injured while helping pull rods on the Kelly & Swanson Oil lease northwest of Elgin. Dr. G. N. Jeffers, was hastily summoned and found Mr. Hunt in a critical condition and decided to have him taken to the hospital at Independence. There they found that the scull had been badly fractured and treatment was administered at once but the injury was fatal and he passed away about twelve o'clock Wednesday.
Mr. Hunt was employed by Wallas Harpist, superintendent of the lease and with Lyman West they were pulling rods when the stake which held the block and tackle was pulled from the ground striking him almost full in the head and face.
The body was brought to the house of his father W. A. Hunt near the Moore Prairie School house yesterday evening and his funeral took place from there this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
This is the first fatal accident to occur in the Elgin Oil Field and is extremely sad as Mr. Hunt leaves a young wife and a little child to mourn his death, together with his parents, relatives and friends.
Clarence Hunt was a young man about twenty two or three years of age and has worked with the oil development here for some time past and was well known by everyone, and no young man in the community stood higher among his fellow workmen or the community at large than did he, and to the sorrowing wife and relatives the Journal extend the deepest sympathy of all this community.
