"Another Landmark Felled In The Forrest"
John Hart, Senior, was born July 18th 1837. He died at Caney Hospital, Caney, Kansas, November 20th, 1902, and was interred in Greenwood cemetery, Sedan, November 21st, services conducted by Rev. D. M Campbell.
He was married to Jane Bailey, March 6th, 1861. Eight children were born to this union, four of whom, one son and three daughters are living. He came to Kansas in 1871, settling on the farm where he resided up to his death. In his death his widow loses a kind and affectionate companion, his children a lovable and indulgent father his neighbors and exemplary citizen, and the Methodist church one solid, substantial and energetic member.
The vacant chair by the fireside betokens that the angels rejoice at his coking and the thought consoles his family and friends that as he lived, so he died, with his faith strong in the Lord. He joined the Methodist church in Caney Valley, near this place, twenty eight years ago, and ever since has lived a consistent Christian life, ever laboring for the good of his church, his house and his community, honest, courageous and energetic, his influence was ever felt in the betterment of his conditions around him. His life was an example that all would do well to follow, and the imprint of his character will be felt in the lives of his mortal remains shall moulded away to join their kindred dust. Firm convictions steadfast his purpose, whatever he undertook to do was ultimately accompilished. His only question being "is it right?" Convinced of the right , no power could alter his course; wrong no force could compel him to follow.
His life was not insured to be paid in earthly dross, but for twenty-eight years he lived in calm assurance that his soul was insured in the blood of Christ, whence no death cometh and payment is made in an eternity of life beyond the grave, where strife and discord troubleth not and sorrow never comes.
In reverence of his memory we have this to say,
When we think how short a time he had here to stay,
One consoling thought, where his spirit is today.
We are fast journeying our way toward eternity.
Eternity! Eternity! Oh, how long art thou?
Yes, ten million times more.
Blest be the hope, eternity on before.
