MISS OPAL JANE GRAY
New Year's Day Brings Release From Years of Suffering. Many years of endurance as a bedfast invalid came to an end for Opal Jane Gray when death came to release her from that condition on the first day of the New Year.
Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church Monday afternoon, January 2nd at 2:30. The service was conducted by the Rev. J. B. Cooprider assisted by the Rev. Edwin G. Michael. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery: Baird-Westlake in charge.
Opal Gray daughter of William and Mary C. Gray, was born near Sedan, Kansas December 28, 1894 and departed this life January 1, 1933 at the home in Sedan at the age of 38 years 3 days.
She attended the public schools in Sedan and then graduated from Cottey College at Nevada, Missouri. After teaching three terms of school she attended a Commercial school at Independence, Kansas, and then as long as her health permitted she was book-keeper and stenographer for the N. B. Wall Motor Company of Sedan, Then because of her affliction she had to give up her work and yield herself to years of suffering as an invalid and shut-in. She has never been able to walk a step alone since September 20, 1920.
Through these years she has been a constant sufferer yet always cheerful no matter bow sever the pain and suffering. She continually sought to bear her pain and affliction without being a burden or troubling anyone. So remarkable was her fortitude in bearing up cheerfully under her affliction that her physician mentioned the inspiration he found in visiting her. Well people who complain would be made ashamed of themselves if they could visit Miss Gray at her bedside was his frequent comment when discussing her case.
She has been a Christian since girlhood and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. She lived a true and faithful Christian life and left testimony that she was ready to go to be with her Lord.
She leaves to mourn her going her mother, Mrs. W. A. Gray who was her constant companion and cared for her through the long years of her affliction. Her father preceded her in death August 22, 1928; two sisters Mrs. Ethel Burgess of Mulvane, Kansas and Mrs. Lena Hager of Cincinati, Ohio; Two brothers, E. E., and C. M of near Sedan; several nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends.
The following poem, especially descriptive of her life and personality as a shut-in, was read as a part of tb funeral service:
A Cheerful Shut-in
I caught a glimpse but yesterday— Her hands were bent with pain, And yet her smile was bright and gay Like rainbows when there's rain. Her face a happy June day’s dawn; No hint of grief or care; Although a wreck to look npon I saw but sunshine there.
Her voice a joyous rippling brook That's ocean bound and free. Angelic was the pleasant look She gave so graciously. Complaints were hidden deep from view; No plaintive note or word. Though clouded was her sky she knew And sang the songs she’d heard:
Imprisoned behind as great bars Day in and day out the years; And yet her eyes were like the star, Her voice a joy to hear. A cheerful shut-in; truly she A crown deserves above She's weaving lifes great tapestry, The warp and woof are love.
