MR. FREDERICK FIFIELD - Compiled by Kim Baker and submitted by Peg Simons

Fiefield [sic] Dies
Friday Night, Feby. 17, 1905

Frederick Fiefield died at his home in North Peru last Friday night, his death being very sudden. He was born in Vermont in November, 1869[sic]?, he came to Kansas in 1874 and has lived here since.

The funeral services were held at the home in a tent Sunday a.m. at ten o'clock. Rev. Vaughn had charge of the services and the remains were laid to rest in the Peru cemetery.

From The Westmoreland Signal, Westmoreland, Pottawatomie County, Kansas, Friday, March 3, 1905, page 8:

"F. B. Fifiled [sic], who died Peru, Chautauqua county, this week, was 94 years old and had lived in Kansas since 1874. Mr Fifield cast his first vote in New York in 1831, and one year later voted for Henry Clay for President against Andrew Jackson who was in that year elected for a second term, since then Mr. Fifield has voted for the following Presidential candidates: Harrison in 1836 and 1840; Henry Clay, 1844; Zachary Taylor, 1848; . . .[the list goes on]

Uncle Fred Fifield located in Spring Creek township upon arriving here in 1874, together with his wife and sons, Earl, Marvin and Elmer; and removed to Westmoreland in the early '80s. The wife died here, and after awhile he, with his son Elmer and family, removed to southern Kansas. He was born in November, 1810, which made him 94 years and 3 months old at the time of his death. He was a peculiar man; for instance, he thought that the drinking of water was simply a habit, and should be done away with for the good of the health. He declared to us just a short while before leaving here that 'I do not think I have drank a pint of water in eight years.' When asked as to how he got along on so small amount of liquid matter, replied that he drank a cup of tea at each meal and would not allow himself to drink between meals. Uncle Fred was a genial, whole-souled old man, without an enemy so far as we have knowledge and there are a lot of folks hereabouts who will learn of his death with profound sorrow.

MR. JAMES H. FISH - Submitted by Patti Hilton

James Harvey Fish was born Oct. 11, 1868, at Mapleton, Minn. And passed from this life at his farm home northwest of Sedan. Kansas, Tuesday evening, January 12, 1937. He did not quite reach his three score and ten years, as had been his desire.

James was the eldest son of Luke and Mary Ann Fish. His family was one of the early day settlers in the county. When he was eight years old his family moved to Maryland, then to Texas, and finally came to Wauneta, Kansas, at about Christmas time during the year 1882. The vicinity of Wauneta, was his home for fourteen years.

During early life he took up the pursuits of farming. He continued in this industry until his death. He was known as a very good farmer.

As a young man at Wauneta, Mr. Fish became convinced that preparation for the life to come was highly essential. He united with the Wauneta Methodist Protestant church and became determined that he would endeavor so to live that when death should come, he would be prepared. A neighbor has said, "If he was not prepared, it will certainly be too bad for the rest of us."

On May 31, 1936, after he was stricken with his fatal illness, he attended the Wauneta Sunday school and church services, as ever being desirous of being in the House of God, which meant so much to him. After his illness he was greatly missed from the services of the Sedan Methodist church of which he was an honored member at the of his death.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, the Sedan Rebekah Chapter and the Encampment at Peru.

On February 2, 1919, he was united in marriage to Blanche Pollock. This union was more closely forged by the birth of two daughters, Lorraine and Betty. The wife and daughters are left to cherish fond memories of father.

Of a family of six brothers and one sister he is the second to die, his brother, Otto having been killed in a tornado at Manitou, N. D., on July 1, 1935.

The survivors members of his family are his twin sister, Mrs. Jane Butterfield of Sedan, Kansas, Everett of Sedan; Orlo of Elk Point, Canada; Horry of Redfield, S. C. ; and Hugh of Peru; half brothers, Francis Fish and Fordyce Fish of Warroad, Minnesota, and a half sister, Mrs. Ida Hostetter of Glenville, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church in Sedan Thursday afternoon, January 154th, conducted by Rev. H. C. Benton. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery with the burial service of the Odd Fellows order given at the grave.

Among relatives from out of town here to attend the funeral of James Fish last Thursday afternoon were Mrs. Ella Malone and Grover Dryden of Oklahoma City, Ed Dryden of Winfield, Mr. And Mrs. Frank Dryden of Moline, and Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Fish of Peru.

MRS. MARY A. FISH - Submitted by Patti Hilton

DEATH OF PIONEER LADY
Mrs. Mary Ann Fish Called to Her Eternal Reward

Mrs. Mary Ann Fish, well known a pioneer lady of the county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jane Butterfield, in Sedan, Thursday, January 3. She had been in her usual condition of health until a few days prior when she took influenza. No one thought but what she would recover until the day after the New Year, when it was noticed she was not so well. From this time on she grew worse until at 3:15 on the afternoon of January 3rd, the spirit of Mrs. Fish took its departure from this tabernacle of clay and winged its way to the Eternal City to await the resurrection of the just. She was aged 84 years, 8 months and 8 days.

Funeral service was conducted at the Baptist church in Sedan; Sunday afternoon, January 6, at 2:30, in charge of Rev. J. W. Campbell, assisted by Rev. L. E. Griffith. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mary Ann Harvey was born April 26, 1844, in Herkimer County, New York. When she was a small girl three years of age her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Harvey, moved to Palmyra, Wisconsin. It was here that she grew to womanhood.

Miss Harvey was united in marriage to Mr. Luke M. Fish of Mapleton, Minnesota, on November 26, 1866. When she became the wife of Mr. Fish, she became the stepmother of seven children. They had born to their union seven children. It was her happy service, along with that of her husband, to see all of the fourteen little lives committed to their parenthood and care raised to be grown men and women.

In the year 1882 the family moved to Chautauqua County, Kansas, and went on a farm near Wauneta, where they lived until 1896, when they moved to Gravette, Arkansas. They lived at Gravette until the year 1910, when because of failing health, they came back to Chautauqua County to reside with their son, Mr. E. I. Fish of Sedan, Kansas.

Mrs. Fish's life was greatly saddened on September 19, 1916, at which time she lost her husband with whom she had toiled and sacrificed for nearly fifty years. She had been ailing at the time of Mr. Fish's death, with rheumatism. This lingering illness grew worse until she was compelled to take to her bed to which she was confined for about twelve years. During this time she had made her home with daughter, Mrs. Jane Butterfield, of Sedan, where she was a patient sufferer and where loving hands cared tenderly for her.

When a young woman she professed faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior and joined the United Brethren Church. As long as health permitted she was always active in church work. While living at Wauneta she taught a Sunday school class of boys at the Methodist church and it was her happy lot to live to see all the boys converted to the Christian faith. At the time of her death she was a member of the Methodist church of Sedan, Kansas.

MR. CHESTER W. FISHER

Chester Will Fisher passed away on March 30, 2011, at his home in rural Chautauqua County, near Sedan. He was 82 years old, and is survived by his wife Margaret and four of their five children, Charlene Butler, Eldon Fisher, Sandra Wolfe, and Betty Jean Exley. Marilyn Fisher preceded her father in death.

Chester was one of six children and his siblings were Jack P. Fisher, H. Leroy Fisher (deceased), Effie D. Birch, Reba Lee Mooney, and Kenneth Joe Fisher (deceased). Chester also had eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. The grandchildren are as follows: Brian J. Butler, Shawn Butler, Krista Butler, Michelle Wolfe, Shelly Reding, Darnon Wolfe, Melanie Wolfe, and Stacey Exley Great Granchildren are: Tommy Butler, Lee Butler, Georgann Butler, Taylor Butler, Evan Butler, Ryder Reding, Ashley Wolfe, Haze Wolfe, Josiah Wolfe, and Jerzie Abel.

Chester Will Fisher was born April 2, 1928, on the Fisher ranch in Stanley, N.M. He was raised in New Mexico, but also attended Adventist schools in Lincoln, Neb., and Keene, Texas. While he was at Keene, he decided to ask Margaret Fay Garner to become his wife, and they were married on Oct. 18, 1948 at her parent's home in Elida, N.M.

In February of 1951 Chester's parents, Chester Jackson Fisher and Rebecca Fisher, moved to Chautauqua County. Chester Will (Chet) and his wife, Margaret, moved with the elder Fishers and purchased the old Spencer place in the Hale community from John Hobbs. The Fisher's have lived in that location for the last 60 years.

Chester was a lifelong rancher, who loved the outdoors. He was a real cowboy, one of the old school type who did things a certain way for a reason, not because it was the latest fad. He loved the breeze blowing in his face early in the morning, a good horse that bucked for 10 minutes before you rode off to round up cattle, and a pair of handmade boots that fit just right. If there was a rodeo anywhere in the area, he was going to be there if at all possible. He loved wild cow milking, and other crazy events that usually ended up with someone having cracked ribs. He was one of the original stockholders in the Sedan Roundup Club, and has served as President of the organization. In his younger years he served as a County Extension Board member, and was honored with a soil conservation award in the 1970's.

It almost goes without saying that he loved his family, and he loved the Lord. Chester helped to build the Sedan Seventh Day Adventist Church in the early 1970's and has remained a member to this day. He served as church elder for almost 40 years, and supported the church in any way he could. He sent his children to attend Enterprise Academy, as well as Christian summer camps, like Broken Arrow Ranch, and supported those institutions throughout his life. The evidence of his Christian faith was shown in the way he lived his life.

Always ready to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors, often going out of his way to offer assistance before it was needed or asked for, and practicing an open door policy for those who needed a place to stay, or a job for the summer. His home was a constant hub of activity for a large extended family and their friends, and he loved having everyone over to play games, swim, or go coyote hunting.

Chester was a special individual who endeavored to enjoy each da6y to the fullest. Ranch life is filled with hours of hard in all types of weather, and it takes a certain type of person to live that lifestyle. Chester always worked hard, but he played just as hard as he worked. He loved pranks, and was constantly teasing or playing jokes. He believed that each day you made a choice whether to enjoy your day, or have a bad day. Having a sense of humor about everything made life better for you and others around you as well.

Chester just seemed to have that special something that brought out the best in people. You wanted to be a better person when you were around him. He expected you to exhibit good character, high morals, and ethics, and no one wanted to let him down. Family was very important to Chester and he constantly planned picnics, vacations at the lake, and various holiday events as an excuse to invite all his relatives and friends to come join in the fun. Weekends at his house were filled with big meals, lots of company, cards or board games, and traipsing out to the barn to care for the animals. Everyone pitched in to finish the day's work so that the fun could begin. Summertime was a great excuse to play hide-and-seek, and anyone from two years old to seventy could be seen scampering around the large yard and orchard hiding and laughing well into the night. Or loading up piles of "floaties" for a late day swim in the pond. Dragging a hunch of screaming kids around the lake behind his boat was always a highlight of summer activities, and Chester would laugh loudly every time he threw them off the tube, saucer, or water ski's.

Wintertime was a good excuse to drag out the old car hood and hook it up behind the tractor, pickup, or four wheeler in later years. Those who rode in the hood can tell you there is nothing like being flipped out into a snow drift at 40 miles an hour!

As we share remembrances in honor of Chester's memory there seems to be one statement that is repeated over and over, "I can still hear Chester laughing!" What a wonderful legacy to leave for those who knew and loved him.

Church services were held at Monday, April 4, 2011 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Sedan with Pastor Jeff Jorgensen officiating. Burial followed at the Hale Cemetery in Hale.

The family has suggested memorials to the Broken Arrow Ranch Youth Camp or the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and they can be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
