MR. ZACHARY T. EDWARDS - Submitted by Charlie Frye
Zachary Taylor Edwards, aged 85 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James W. Berry, 117 West Third Avenue, shortly after 10 o'clock this morning. He had been in ill health for the past year.
The aged El Doradoan was a Civil War veteran and had resided in El Dorado for 14 years, coming here from Hewins, where he owned a farm on which he had lived for 45 years.
Mr. Edwards was born in October 28, 1848 at Jonesboro, Tenn., and at the age of 15 years enlisted in the Third North Carolina Mounted Infantry, Company A, of the Union Army. The veteran had many interesting experiences in the Civil War to relate. He enllisted at Knoxville, Tenn., on April 5, 1863, and was mustered out on August 8, 1865, after nearly two and a half years of service.
Mr. Edwards came to Kansas about 60 years ago and since that time had made numerous friends. His personality was such that he made friendships easily and scores of persons, bother here and at Hewins, mourn his death. The El Doradoan had been a farmer all his life until retirement.
Mr. Edwards was married to Miss Ida Ellen Layton, at Sedan, on November 30, 1881. He was a member of the Christian Church, at Sedan, and also a member of the Masonic Lodge and of the Odd Fellows.
Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Berry, a niece, Mrs. G.H. Faulkner, of El Dorado; seven grand children, Mode T. Johnson and Mrs. Dewey Harsh, both of El Dorado, and Lenorebelle, Johnnie, Wayne, Link and Carson Edwards, all of Pawhuska, Okla., and one great-grandson, ____.
Funeral arrangements will be announced through the Bird Funeral Home.
Zachary Taylor Edwards who lives with his daughter, Mrs. J. W. Berry, at 118 West Third Avenue, has had a thrilling life in 82 years, which may be why he looks so much younger than his age.
When he was 16 he lived in Jonesboro, Tenn. His five brothers enlisted in the Northern Army for the Civil War, so Mr. Edwards enlisted too, on April 5, 1863, in the Third North Carolina Mounted Infantry, Company A., and served until August 5, 1865. Of that experience he remembers most poignantly engagements at Red Banks and Broylesville, Tenn., and Big Riney, Carolina.
Thirty years ago Mr. Edwards learned that he was one of the famous "Edwards heirs." His great grandfather's son, owned the land, so the story goes on which are Madison Square, Trinity Church, and Wall Street, in New York City, property valued at 77 billion dollars. He leased it for 99 years. During the 99 years the property rights became entangled to such an extent that "Edwards heirs" from all over the United States (many named Edwards who had no claim on the property claiming it anyhow) worked for 30 years to prove their lineage. After anticipating an immense fortune for 30 years, the "heirs" read in newspapers a couple of years ago that the case had been thrown out of court.

She Is Just Away
I cannot say, and I will not say That she is dead.—She is just away!
With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand,
She has wandered into an unknown land.
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, Since she lingers there.
So think of her faring on, as dear
In the love of There as the love of Here;
Think of her still as the same, I say,
She is not dead—she is just away.
