COLONAL SAMUEL DONELSON - Submitted by Jean (Murphy) Moore.

COL. DONELSON IS DEAD

Passed Way Late Saturday Evening
Lacked Just One Month of Being 80 Years Old - A Peculiar Character

Col. Samuel Donelson died at his home in the east part of the city a 6:30 o'clock Saturday evening. His death was caused by pneumonia induced by catching a very severe cold at Wichita while attending the Democratic convention early this month. The colonel did not take an overcoat with him and as a result came home feeling badly. He was able to be around some but never felt like himself since coming home.

The funeral was held at Elgin Sunday and addresses were delivered at the grave by ex-Congressman Jackson and Senator W. S. Fitzpatrick. Burial took place at 5:30 p.m.

Colonel Donelson came from a family well known in southern history. His father was a North Carolinian by birth descended from John Donelson who founded Nashville, Tenn, and was killed by the Indians. Andrew Jackson married John Donelson's daughter.

Col. Donelson was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee, May 24, 1824. At the age of 16 he was sent one day by his father to the river to get some sled runners. He found them on a big barge tied to the bank. He cut the boat loose, floated down the river with it and was not heard from by his folks again for 16 years. When he finally returned he carried a pair of sled runners with him. During this sixteen years he managed to get a college education and among others was associated at Bar-bourville, Ky., with the late Gov. Woodson of Missouri and Judge Miller of the supreme bench. In 1850 he went to Middleton, Shelby County, Indiana, and two years later was elected to the legislature, serving with Dan Pratt and David Turpie, who afterwards became United State senators. In 1854, through the influence of Thomas Hendricks he was made route agent on the old Jefferson & Indianapolis Ry. Six years later he was dismissed from this position because he espoused the candicacy of Stephen A. Douglas, the objection being made by Senator Bright. In 1861 he raised a company and for eighteen months served in Missouri and Arkansas, being the captain. Ill health caused his resignation and he was offered a colonelcy but declined. From 1863 to 1866 he served as a director of one of the Southern State prisons. In 1867 he came to Kansas, first settling in Labette county and three years later taking a claim in Osage county south of Sedan, thinking it was in Kansas. The new survey of the Indian country caused him to lose all of his improvements as well as the land. He then moved into what was then old Howard county, now Chautauqua and Elk. In 1872 he was elected county attorney of Howard county by four votes, although General Grant carried the county by 720. In some precincts he didn't get a vote. In 1876 he was elected a delegate to the National Democratic convention as an anti-Felnon man. He sought the Democratic nomination for govenor in 1882, and when Martin was nominated and declined, Col. Donelson was the favorite son beyond any question. But on his way to Topeka he was taken very sick at Howard and Gov. Glick received the honor.

Col. Donelson was the life-long friend of Thomas A. Hendricks. Hendricks soon after his election to the vice-presidency appointed Col. Donelson his private secretary, but Washington life was so uncongenial to the Kansas colonel that he served in that capacity only two months. Another prominent Kansan who was very close to the late colonel was A. M. Jackson, ex-congressman of Winfield. He was sent for by Col. Donelson and arrived late Saturday evening just before his friend became unconscious.

Col. Donelson had two sons, Walker Donelson of Pawnee, Kola., and Dr. E. M. Donelson of Cedar Vale. Both with their families attended the funeral.

MISS ELBERTA DOTY - Submitted by Atcha Nolan

FATAL FIRE AT PERU
YOUNG "DAUGHTER" OF MELVIN DOTY LOST HER LIFE.
OTHER MEMBERS OF FAMILY BURNED

Fire Caught From Lamp in a Closet---Friends Respond With Big Donation for Family's Relief.---All of Injured Will Recover. One of the worst tragedies that ever visited the city of Peru occurred there Saturday night when Alberta [sic] (Elberta) Doty, the 8-year-old daughter of Melvin Doty and wife was burned to death in a fire which destroyed their residence. Mr. Doty and an older daughter are very seriously burned. Mrs. Doty was also burned but not so seriously.

The fire occurred about 10:15 Saturday night and is supposed to have caught from a gas light in a clothes closet. Earlier in the evening when the lamp was in use a part of the broken globe had fallen on the floor and started to burn the carpet and it is thought a smouldering spark from this started the blaze.

The family had retired and when awakened the entire house was in flames. Mrs. Doty and three small children were able to get out the doors. The room occupied by the two older girls was completely in flames when they were awakened, but the oldest girl managed to lead the other to a door, when, in the excitement and pains of the burns she had received, she jerked away and ran back into the flames and was burned to death. The older girl was severely burned before she succeeded in making her escape. Mr. Doty ran through the flames several times in an effort to rescue his children and was severely burned over his entire body, but it is thought that both he and his daughter have a good chance for recovery.

The funeral of the dead child was held at the Methodist church in Peru Monday, Rev. J. B. Brown of Elgin officiating, and the remains were interred in Sedan cemetery. The citizens of Peru promptly responded to the aid of the stricken family with a free will donation amounting to about $800, and personal assistance. The Relief Corps tendered the use of their hall while they had to be cared for and the room was fitted up for them Sunday by a force of about twenty-five workers, and a trained nurse has been secured to care for them.
