MR. EDMUND R. COMER - Submitted by Billy Smith

"Eddie" Comer, son of Thomas H. and Emma M. Comer, was born May 08, 1897 in the Wauneta, Kansas area and died March 07, 1904 at his home. In the death of Eddie Comer we have one of the saddest tragedies that has ever befallen the people of this community.

On the day of his death he had eaten a hearty dinner and then had gone to the field to husk corn fodder, returning in the evening with his corn. He had come out of the cornfield and into the pasture about a quarter of a mile east of the Comer house and had closed the gate and climbed into the wagon. On Sunday he had been to Wauneta and traded Clark Stevens out of a hammerless revolver. The tripper would sometimes catch when stuck and it is supposed that Edd was examining it. The ball passed into the corner of his right eye without cutting the lid and ranged around the back of his skull, causing a bulged ridge for almost three inches, losing its force and not passing out.

About twenty minutes after he had driven through the gate his sister, Cora, seeing the team still standing, went to them. Taking the unconscious boy in her lap she drove quickly to the house where he lived about half-an-hour, never speaking a word. The revolver was found in the cornfield with a single empty shell in it that had done the deed. Dr. Hahn was sent for and decided it was not necessary to hold a coroner's inquest.

Edd was about eighteen years old and an industrious boy with many friends. He seemed to love his home and did not run around as other boys do. He had spent the winter in school where he was quiet and studious but as the spring work came on he willingly assumed his part of it.

The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Villars at the family home after which the remains were laid to rest in the Denick cemetery followed by a concourse of more than fifty families. The bereaved family has the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

MR. W. H. COPPLE - 1908 - submitted by Lena Seng

W. H. Copple was born March 25, 1843, in Polk County, Missouri, and died in Sedan, Kansas, February 26, 1908, aged 64 years, 11 months, and 2 days. He came to Kansas when about eleven years of age, and has resided on a farm a short distance west of Sedan since about 1870. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the Union Army and served his country faithfully for three years. He has ben married twice. The first union were born four children, three of whom are still living. His first wife having died, he married the companion who survives him in 1876. To this union were born four children, all of whom are still living.

Mr. Copple had never enjoyed very good health since the war, and for the last two years he had been incapacitated for any active service. Finally becoming unable personally to look after the farm, he rented out his farm and moved to Sedan last fall to be near the doctor and where he could be more free from care. Much of the time during the last year or two he had been confined to this bed, and several times he had been near death's door. Having recently purchased the John's property near the mill, he moved into it on Tuesday the 25th. He felt unusually well during the day and rested will at night, but on Wednesday morning about nine o'clock he passed quietly and easily away, having remained in bed all the morning.

After death struck him, he tried to speak to his wife, but could not. His death was quite sudden and apparently painless. The immediate cause of his death was doubtless heart failure, as his heart, as well as his lungs, had been troubling him, together with some other complications.

Mr. Copple was one of the old settlers of Chautauqua county, and was well respected by his neighbors and a large number of acquaintances, as was manifested by the large funeral.

The funeral services were conducted from the family residence by Rev. J.N. Kidd, of the Baptist church, assisted by Rev. J.J. Dunham. of the Presbyterian church and his remains were laid to rest in the west cemetery.
