Sedan Times-Star - August 10, 2005

MRS. NOLA D. CHADWELL

SEDAN - Nola D. Chadwell, age 92, of Sedan, Kan., formerly of Dexter, Kan., passed away Thursday morning, Aug. 4, 2005, at Sedan City Hospital in Sedan.

Born on Sept. 18, 1912 in rural Piney, Okla., she was the daughter of Charles and Ida May Spinks. She was raised and received her education in Westville, Okla.

She was united in marriage on Nov. 5, 1928 to Gerald Malen Chadwell in Westville, where they made their home. She and Gerald later moved to San Bernadino, Calif., where she worked in an orange packing plant and looked after her grandchildren.

In 1976, she and Gerald returned to Westville until his death on May 3, 1982. She then moved to Sedan, Kan. and later Dexter, Kan. to be near family.

Nola was a devoted Christian and a member of the Assembly of God Church in San Bemadino. Her hobbies included spending time with her grandchildren and cooking. She was well known for her cooking and loved by all that knew her.

Her family includes her nine grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, Orville Lee and Allen Dewayne Chadwell, a grandson, Jeny Chadwell and six brothers and three sisters.

Graveside funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 8, 2005, at 1 p.m. at the Baptist Mission Cemetery in Westville, Okla.

A memorial has been established in Nola’s name for the Sedan City Hospital. Contributions may be made through the Miles Funeral Home, Box 720, Winfield, KS 67156.

MR. GREGORY J. CHAMBERLAND

Gregory J. Chamberland, age 43, of 2016 Holloway Dr. in Winfield, died Monday, Mar. 26, 2001 at the William Newton Hospital in Winfield.

He. was born Nov. 29, 1957 in Winfield. His parents were W. J. "Bill" and Shirley (Kiss) Chamberland.

He attended the Winfield schools and was also home schooled by his parents. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Chruch and was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He worked at home for Twin Rivers D.C. and enjoyed sorting his candy. He is survived by his parents, W. J. "Bill" and Shirley Chamberland of the home; two brothers, Michael Chamberland of Sedan and James Chamberland of Marion, KS; three sisters, Elizabeth Frazier of Winfield, Cynthia Bland of Burden and Catherine Bowman of Winfield; many nieces and nephews.

Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Mar. 29 at the Swisher-Taylor and. Morris Chapel with Mass at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Mar. 29 at the Holy Name Catholic Church. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Holy Name Catholic Church. Friends may call Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to Rosary time or Friday from 8:00 a.m. to services time at the funeral home.

Swisher-Taylor and Morris Funeral Home is in charge of services.

MRS. MAXINE CHAMPLIN

Maxine (Hall) Champlin, age 82, of Denison, Kansas, formerly of Cedar Vale, Kansas, died Thursday, January 17, 2002, at a Winchester, KS care facility.

She was born August 8, 1919 near Sedan, KS. She was the youngest of nine children of Charles and Gertrude (Wolfe) Hall.

Mrs. Champlin lived in and around Cedar Vale, KS most of her life. She worked at many jobs over the years, including bookkeeping for the Coop Elevator, cooking at a local restaurant and clerking at the variety store. She spent most of the years working at the locker plant as a butcher, meat processor, bookkeeper and manager.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Legion Auxiliary in Cedar Vale.

Maxine married the love of her life, Rollin Champlin, on January 24, 1938 in Ponca City, OK. He preceded her in death on October 24, 1985. She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Cecil, Oliver, Gene and John and three sisters, Lena Calvin, Mildred Helmick and Addie Utt.

Survivors include a son, Rollin Champlin, Oklahoma City, OK, a daughter, Karen Sue Gordon, Denison, KS, a sister, Doris Bobbitt, LaGuna Vista, TX, two granddaughters, Sylvia Sue Skinner, Overland Park, KS and Anna Barnhill, Oklahoma City, OK, two great grandsons, Cody James Fund and Kegan Lee Skinner, both of Overland Park, KS and many nieces and nephews.

Services for Mrs. Champlin were Monday, January 21, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale. Burial was in the Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Jefferson County Geriatric Center in care of Mercer Funeral Home, 1101 W. 4th, Holton, KS 66436.

MRS. NELLIE MAE CHAPMAN

Nellie Chapman dies Nov. 8
Nellie Mae Chapman of Sedan died Nov. 8 at the Wesley Medical Center at Wichita. She was 53 years of age. She had lived all of her life in Chautauqua county.

Service were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the Graves-Baird chapel with Rev. Dois Nix officiating. Interment was in the Greenwood cemetery at Sedan.

She was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Chautauqua to Bert and Myrtle (Yates) Thompson. She married LeRoy Chapman on Nov. 3, 1940 in Sedan. She was employed at the Sedan city hospital prior to her illness.

Survivors include her husband, LeRoy of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Cupp of Haysville; two sons, Charles of Saint Joseph, Mo., and Frank of El Dorado; five grandchildren; her father, Bert Thompson of Wynona, Okla. and a brother; Everett Thompson of Pawhuska, Okla.

MR. CHARLES CHASE

Charles N. Chase, 79, of Sedan, died Monday evening, Dec. 23, 2002, in his home in Sedan.

He was born Sept. 29, 1923 in Sedan to Clyde L. and Pearl Marie (Niblack) Chase. He grew up in Sedan and attended Sedan schools.

He joined the U. S. Army Air Force on Nov. 4, 1942. He served as an aerial engineer and gunner on a B-17. While serving with the Eighth Air Force in the European Theatre of Operations during World War II, his plane was shot down over Germany and he was held in a German POW camp for one year. He completed his enlistment at the Army Air Force Base in Coffeyville, being discharged from active duty on Nov. 1, 1945.

On April 26, 1943, he married Emogene Eloise Hosmer in Lincoln, Neb., where Mr. Chase was stationed with the Army Air Force. Following his discharge, they made their home in Sedan, where Mr. Chase was employed with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company until 1986 when he retired after 40 years. Mrs. Chase preceded him in death on May 25, 1999. Mr. Chase was a member of the First Christian Church of Sedan, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Sedan, the ExPOW’s and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include three sons, Jim, Bartlesville, Okla., John, Gravois Mills, Mo. and Greg, Sedan, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will take place at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.

The family suggests memorials to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be left with the funeral home.

MR. GEORGE A CHASE - March 15, 1932

George Alonzo Chase for many years a resident of Chautauqua county, passed away at Elk City at 5:05 p.m., Tuesday, March 15, following an illness of ten days.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Sedan this Thursday afternoon conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Benn Wynn Hugg. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery.

Deceased was born May 6, 1855, in Cedar County, Iowa., the son of James and Mary Chase. He was united in marriage to Miss Kate Schweitzberger at Rochester, Iowa on January 10th, 1870. He moved to Kansas in 1885.

He is survived by five sons and two daughters - E. Chase, George F. Chase and James H. Chase of Elk City, Claude Chase of Caney, Clair M. Chase of Weskan, Kansas, Mattie T. Rodarmel of Dodge City and Mary M. Clark of Longton. Also by fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and by two daughters, Anna and Ida and by one son Charles.

Deceased had followed the occupation of a farmer in and near this community for many years, until the feebleness of age compelled his retirement. He was well liked by all who knew him. He was a member of the Methodist church.


MRS. KATY A. CHASE - 1929

Mrs. Katy Schweitzberger-Chase, a resident of Chautuaqua County, Kansas for about thirty years, a highly respected citizen, a good friend, a fine neighbor, a faithful companion and a loving Mother departed this life at her home about five miles east of Sedan, Kansas, April 16th, 1929. Mrs. Chase has been in failing health for several years but she bore her affliction patiently until on Tuesday of this week in the early hours of the new morning she fell into death's sleep at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 2 days old. The funeral service was conducted Wednesday afternoon, April 17th, at 2:30 at the Methodist Church, Rev. J. W. Campbell, pastor, officiating and interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Chase was born at Rochester New York, May 14, 1855. When a young woman she came west with her parents, who settled in the state of Iowa. She was united in marriage to Mr. George A. Chase of Rochester, Iowa, January 10, 1874. To their union ten children were born, three of whom, Ida May, Charlie and Mrs. Anna Riley preceded the mother in death.
She is survived by her husband, Mr. George A. Chase of Sedan; five, sons, Ernest, of Elk City, Forrest, of Independence, Claude, James and Clair of Sedan, Kansas; two daughters, Mrs. Maggie Clark, of Longton, Kansas and Mrs. Mattie Rodarmel, of Dodge City, Kansas; fourteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.
Mrs. Chase was converted to the Christian Faith early in life and united with the Methodist Church of which she was a member at the time of her death. Now God has called her to the eternal World and she has joined the church triumphant. The bereaved ones have the love, sympathy and prayers of their many friends in this hour of great sorrow which has come to them.

MR. TERRY A. CHILCUTT

Terry Dean Arie Chilcutt died Saturday morning, Sept. 11, 2004. He was born Oct. 27, 1974.

Terry was raised in and around the southeast Kansas area. He attended Cedar Vale schools and graduated in 1993.

In a previous marriage, he had two children, Jordan and Samantha, who were always in his heart.

In January 1999, he met Victoria and love bloomed. In November 1999, they had a set of twins, Tern and Sonya. they were followed by Preston in 2001 and then Sununer in 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria and six children, Jordan and Samantha Miller, Havana, Tern, Sonya, Preston and Summer, Independence, his mother, Charlotte Arie, Cedar Vale, his father, Gerald Arie, Independence, three brothers, Gerald, Jr., Parsons, Joseph, Independence, Leonard, Sabetha, three sisters, Channa Walker, Independence, Crystal Hammock, Pryor, Misty Riley, Cedar Vale, his grandmother, Velma Hufferd, Havana, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and lots of people and friends who loved and knew him.

He was a man with a big heart and was willing to do anything for anybody. His first love was racing, his second was his family. He was loved by many and will be missed always and forever.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Potts Chapel in Independence. The family conducted a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at the oval in Riverside Park.

MR. TIM L. CHRISMAN

WINFIELD - Tim L. Chrisman, 63, of Winfield, Kan., passed away Saturday morning, May 24, 2003, at his home.

Born on May 10, 1940 in Sedan, Kan., he was the son of Leo and Grace (McGill) Chrisman. He was raised and educated in Sedan and graduated from Sedan High School in 1958. Following graduation, he began working in the construction business.

On Oct. 14, 1961, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Harrington at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Moline, Kan. The couple lived in Winfield for five years and later in Sedan for a short time. They returned to Winfield where they made their home.

Mr. Chrisman was employed at Cessna Aircraft in Wichita in the sheet metal department. In 1977, he began working for Petroleum Enterprise as a production superintendent and in 1991 began employment with Hopper Oil Company. He owned and operated DAP Oil Company from 1999 until 2002 when he retired.

His hobbies included his children and grandchildren, old tractors, steam engines and woodworking, especially making rocking horses.

His family includes his wife, Carolyn, of the home, his sons, Joe Chrisman and wife, Lisa, Winfield, Kan., and John Chrisman and wife, Karen, Winfield, Kan., his daughter, Marilyn Crotser and husband, Steve, The Colony, Texas, his brothers, Mack Chrisman and Ross Chrisman, both of Sedan, Kan., his sisters, Delena (Jimmie) Sanborn, Sedan, Kan., Carolyn Dye, Independence, Kan., and Janice Chrisman, Bartlesville, Okla. and eight grandchildren, Kelly, Levi and Rebecca Chrisman, Drew and Emily Chrisman and Seth, Caleb and Sarah Crotser. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment followed at Highland Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in Mr. Chrisman’s name for the Special Olympics in Winfield and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Miles Funeral Service in Winfield was in charge of the services.

MISS ESSIE M. CHRISTIE - Submitted by Freida Wells

Miss Essie Mabel Christie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Christie, was born in Miami county, Kansas, Nov. 18, 1876, and died at her home in this city early Monday morning, Dec. 17, 1900, aged 24 years and 29 days.

Essie united with the Baptist church here in 1895, and her life was one of a true Christian lady ever ready to lend a helpful hand to all whom she came in contact with. She was a faithful Sunday school worker and her class turned out together, paying a last tribute to their teacher.

During her sickness she suffered terribly, for five weeks baffling with complication of diesases, but at all times was loving and kind and ___her suffering with christian patience.

In the death of Essie the parents lose an excellent daughter, the sisters and brothers will miss her kindness in the home, while the church will keenly feel her absence and her friends and neighbors will remember her as an example of true womanhood.

The funeral services were held at the Baptist church on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 18, conducted by Rev. G. T. Colvin of Osawatomie, and old friend of the family. The remains were laid to rest in the Cedar Vale cemetery. The Sons and Daughters of Justice lodge, of which the deceases was a member, turned out in a body, followed by a large concourse of sympathetic friends of the bereaved family.

Lucy Church Dies Unexpectedly Friday At Daughter's Home Mrs. Lucy Church, 76, died suddenly Friday April 28 at the home of her daughter Mrs. R. W. Bloxom at Pratt, Kansas. Mrs. church had not been ill and had gone about her usual morning work, succumbing shortly after noon.

Lucy Howe Church was born September 27, 1874 at Hewins, the daughter of Mary Catherine and Albert Howe. Her early life was spent at Hewins and at Breckenridge, Mo. where she graduated from high school.

On April 27, 1901 she was married to George W. Church. To this union four children were born, all of whom survive. They are Ruth Bloxom of Pratt, Lucinda Evans and Catherine Sturges of Sedan and Fred Church of Wichita. A sister Mrs. Julia Wineinger lives in Cleveland, Okla and a brother L. H. Howe at Kingsley, Kansas. Other survivors include 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Mrs. Church was a member of the Baptist church.

Funeral services were held in Hewins Sunday, April 30, with Rev. Trent of Winfield and Rev. Foster Nelson of Sedan officiating. Interment was in Rose Dale Cemetery in Hewins.

MRS. ADA M. CHURCHMAN

Ada Marie Churchman of Park City, Kansas, formerly of Hamilton, died at the Riverside Health Care Center in Wichita on Sunday, December 3, 2000 at the age of 96.

She was born January 14, 1904 in rural Elk County, Kansas, the daughter of James and Rhoda (Taylor) Marion. Ada attended rural grade schools in Elk County and was a graduate of Howard High School. She then attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, where she received her teaching certificate and then taught in Elk and Greenwood County rural grade schools. While in the Claycomb district, she met and later married Marion Francis Churchman on July 17, 1929 at Eureka, KS. They moved with Marion’s job with Phillips Petroleum Company throughout Kansas and resided on the Scott Lease in Greenwood County from 1938 to 1960. They then moved to the Burkett community. Following the death of their daughter, Marjorie, Marion and Ada raised her daughter, Teri, from the age of 3. Marion died on March 8, 1963 and Ada and Teri moved to Hamilton to make their home. Ada was a baby-sitter in the Hamilton community for many years and attended the Hamilton United Methodist Church. In 1993 she moved to Park City to live with her daughter and a son-in-law, Ramona and Richard Hare. Ada was a member of the Park City Christian Church and also held membership in the Howard American Legion Auxiliary, Sorosis’ Club, HDU and the Embroidery Club.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ramona and Richard Hare of Park City, seven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, two brothers, Luther Marion of Cedar Vale, KS and Maurice Marion of Howard, KS, one sister, Lucy Brammer of Wichita, KS, along with many nieces, nephews and friends. Ada was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, Arnold Wayne Churchman, a daughter, Marjorie Jane Morledge, four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2000, at the Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home in Eureka, with Pastor Merilee Berry of the First Christian Church of Conway Springs, KS officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery at Eureka.

A memorial has been established in her name with the Park City Christian Church. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.

MRS. DONNA M. CLAPP

ELGIN, Kan. - Donna Marie (Wallen) Clapp, 70, went up to her heavenly Home on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005.

She was born on Oct. 9, 1935, in a small lease house in Ochelata, Okla. to Ted and Iva Wallen. She was one of eight children. She had a daughter, Brenda Joyce, which some dear friends adopted on March 15, 1951.

She was briefly married to Dale Payton and had one daughter, Theresa Sue Butcher, on Aug. 15, 1953.

She worked as a carhop and at a retail store. In 1955, she met Jim Clapp and they later married in Barnsdall, Okla., at the Baptist Church parsonage. After a while of working, she quit to become a homemaker. On Dec. 19, 1967, they bad a daughter, Niki Rene.

She found a passion for flower gardens. They lived in Barnsdall from 1956 until 1983, before moving to the country one and a half miles from Elgin, Kan., down in Tinker Hill. She wanted a more simple way of life, and to be closer to her daughter, Theresa and family. Mrs. Clapp enjoyed watching the wildlife.

In 1984, Donna found a new hidden passion finding her first daughter, B J., with the help of ALMA organization. She also enjoyed sewing machine quilting, because God always stretched the pieces, or chose the colors, she said.

In 1986, her health went down hill due to a hyperactive thyroid. It caused osteoporosis and heart problems. Her message to all is to get your thyroid checked, and stop smoking, or you will die of COPD.

Her quilts meant a lot to people and she quit quilting in the early 90’s because of declining health.

Dale and Mae Payton moved to be closer to Theresa and her family and were special friends to her. June 2005, was a major blessing, she got to see BJ. for the first time in many years.

She was a member of the Whippoorwil Baptist Church in Whippoorwil, Okla.

Survivors include her husband, Jim Clapp, of the home, three daughters, Brenda Joyce and Lee Withers, Theresa Sue and Larry Butcher, and Niki Rene and Roger Magee, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren; four brothers, Doug, Dewey, Richard and Darrel Wallen; two sisters, Peggy Turnetti and Betty Railey, her physician, Jackie Jones, and the nurses at Cornerstone Hospice. She was preceded in death by a brother, her parents and a friend, Dale Payton.

Services were held Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005 at 10 am. at the Whippoorwill Baptist Church in Whippoorwill, Okla., with Pastor Larry Butcher officiating. Cremation followed.

The family has suggested memorial to Cornerstone Hospice or Whippoorwill Baptist Church and may be given to the funeral home. David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan was in charge of the arrangements.

MRS. ADA CLARK

Mrs. Ada Clark Dies in Tulsa
Mrs. Ada Clark, mother of Mrs. F. B. Garrett, died early Friday morning in Tulsa, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lenore Smith. She had been ill several weeks. She leaves to mourn her passing, Mrs. Smith of Tulsa, Mrs. Garrett of Sedan. Mrs. Otto Stallard of Dallas, Tex.; Mrs. Margaret Bawbell of Los Angeles, Calif.. and a son, Robert Clark of Memphis, Tenn.

Mrs. Clark was a Chautauqua county pioneer, having come to this county with her husband, Frank Clark. in 1874 and to Sedan in 1882. Mr. Clark was a Civil war veteran and Mrs. Clark was an active worker in the Woman’s Relief Corps. Each year she gave in a very splendid manner, Lincoln’s Gettysburg address at the exercises on Decoration day. With the exception of a very few times she did not miss taking this part. Mrs. Clark was also prominent in Eastern Star and other organizations, giving of her time very freely.

A number of years ago she went to Pawhuska to make her home, later going to Tulsa, but she has made frequent visits here with her daughter, Mrs. Garrett and her many friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p. m. at the Episcopal church in Sedan. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery.

Following is the obituary:
Ada S. Church was born in Morenci, Mich., March 13, 1867 and died at Tulsa, Okla., Jan. 27, 1939. aged 81 years, 10 months and 24 days.

She was educated in the schools of Morenci and Adrian. Mich. She came to Illinois in 1874 to help care for her sister’s two small children. They returned to Kansas in September where the mother died leaving the two children, Mamie, three, and Robert, one year old. She cared for them for two years and then she was married to their father, Frank Clark, in 1876. To this union were born three children, Nellie, Margaret and Lenore, all of whom survive her.

She lived a long and busy life but always had time to help anyone who was in trouble or needed help. She was a charter member of the Sedan Relief Corps, a past matron of Sedan and Pawhuska chapters of Eastern Star. She was a kind and affectionate wife, a loving mother and a friend to all who knew her.

MRS. AUDREY CLARK

Audrey (Sandfort) Clark, age 75, a former resident of Elk City and Oak Valley, Kan., died Sept. 30, 2001 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Memorial graveside services will be held at 10 am. Saturday, June 15, 2002, at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City, Kan., interment will he under the direction of the Potts Chapel.

Audrey Clark was born May 15, 1926. She grew up in the Old Bagnell, Mo. area and spent most of her life raising a family at Lake Ozark, Mo.

She was united in marriage to J. E. (Bill) Clark and he died August 2, 1981.

Survivors include 5 daughters, Emma Clark, Oak Valley, Kan., Nancy Parsons, Albuquerque, N. M., Melinda Burns, Lexington, Ky, Becky Clark, Versailles, Mo., and Cindy Palmer, Norman, Okla., 1 son, Mark Clark, Lake Ozark, Mo., 2 sisters, Hettic Espegren, Sacramento, Calif. and D. 0. (Dorrie) Sandfort, Tucson, Ariz., 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

MR. GEORGE N. CLARK

George N. Clark, an uncle of Perry Clark, chief engineer at the Independence city water plant, died yesterday in his home at Geneseb, Ill. He was known here, having visited frequently in and around Independence. Besides Perry Clark, other surviving relatives in Independence include Clyde Howell, nephew, and Mrs. Tim Clark, and Mrs. Bell Clark, sisters-in-law. There are other relatives living near Havana, Peru and Caney. He was the last surviving member his immediate family.

Mary Bess Clark, 79, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2007 in Tulsa, Okla.

She was born February 4, 1928 in Sedan, the daughter of Robert Lee and LaVerna Opal (Greathouse) Foster. She married William A. Clark on October 24, 1948, he survives of the home in Tulsa.

Survivors include three children; Sarah Neph and her husband Richard of Bixby, Okla., George and his wife Sherrie Clark of Colgate, Okla., Glenn and Cathy Adams of Norman, Okla.; Sisters Nina Donohue, Nancy Blair, Lucy Mae Bennett, Carol Shull, Sally Birkle and Mickey Armbrister; Brothers Mack Foster, David Foster, Dan Foster and Don Foster; Grandchildren Sarah Adams, Billy Adams, Rebekah Neph, Joshua Neph, Matthew Neph, Caleb Neph and Katie Clark, also many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, twin sisters Ila and Ima Foster, another sister LeOpal Royalty, a brother Bill Foster and her daughter Allene Adams.

Mary was a member of Beams of Light Church in Tulsa, Okla. She was best known as “Aunt” Mary when she and “Uncle” BillS cared for an taught countless children about Jesus at their daycare.

A service will be held on Saturday, June 16, 12:30 p.m. at the Floral Haven Funeral Chapel, 6500 S. 129 East Avenue, Broken Arrow, Okla. with the Pastor Jimmy Ray officiating. Burial was in the Floral Haven Memorial Gardens.

SEDAN - Mary Ellen Clark, age 94, of Sedan, passed away Tuesday afternoon, July 18, 2006, at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan.

She was born June 25, 1912, in Dearing, Kan., to Thornton and Minnie (Durst) Blackburn. She married James E. Clark, Sr. on May 22, 1928, in Claremore, Okla. She worked as a sales clerk at the Corner Drugstore in Sedan. She has lived in Sedan since 1985.

She is survived by two sons, James E. Clark, Jr. and wife Donna of rural Havana, and Robert L. Clark and wife Patty of Edmond, Okla., former longtime residents of Caney; six grandchildren, Steve Clark of Havana, Randy Clark of Caney, Ron Clark of McPherson, Kan., Stacie Lister of Bartlesville, Scott Lambdin of Caney, and Ken Clark of New Orleans: nine great-grandchildren, Matt Clark, Michael Clark, Rob Clark, Russell Clark, Kyle Lambdin, Taylor Lambdin, John Clark, Keesie Clark, and Adam Clark.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; one daughter, Jean Lambdin; three sisters; and three brothers.

Graveside services were held at 9:30 a.m., Monday. July 24, 2006, at the Hillsdale Cemetery, Northwest of Havana.

Friends called on Sunday, July 23, 2006, from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.

The family has suggested memorials to the Sedan Education Foundation and contributions may be left with the funeral home.

MISS NEVA P. CLAYTON

Neva P. Clayton, age 87, of Sedan, passed away early Tuesday morning, June 3, 2008 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan.

She was born Jan. 1, 1921 in Chautauqua, to John V. and Gertrude (Sheridan) Clayton. She attended Chautauqua Grade School and lived in the Chautauqua area all of her life.

In 1981, she moved into the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan where she resided until her death. She enjoyed Bible study, musicals, bingo, and all of the activities that she participated in at Pleasant Valley Manor.

She is survived by a numerous nieces and nephews, and a special friend Clydean Littrell of Chautauqua.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers and one sister Treva Mae Huckstep.

Friends may sign the register book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, June 12, 2008 in Sedan, with Earl Tresner and Hospice Chaplain Mike Graham officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

MISS AMANDA CLEMENCE

Amanda Renee “Mandy” Clemence, age 16 of Wichita, died Friday, May 3, 2002. She was born December 3, 1985 to Mark and Catherine (Goss) Clemence in Wichita. Mandy attended Goddard High School, where she was known as a social butterfly.

She is survived by her parents, Mark and Catherine Clemence, a sister, Alisha Gingerich, and a brother, Jason Gingerich, grandparents, Don and Margaret Clemence and Dorothy Goss, all of Wichita, and Charles and Sue Goss, Toronto, Kan. She will be fondly remembered by her adoring nephew, Casey Gingerich, many other relatives and hundreds of friends.

A Celebration of Life service was held on Wednesday, May 8, at 2 p.m. in the West Heights United Methodist Church in Wichita, with Rev. John Martin officiating.

Mandy’s final resting place is in the Rose Garden in the Resthaven Gardens of Memories in Wichita. Memorials may be made to West YMCA (Gymnastic Equipment), 6940 Newell. Street, Wichita, Kan. 67212.

Charles A. "Chuck” Cloninger, 58, of Wichita, formerly of Burden, died May 20, 2002.

He was a computer technician for Washer Specialties Co.

Survivors include a brother, David Allen Cloninger, Malvern, Ark., and a sister, Linda Marie Cloninger, Arkansas City.

Services were held at Thursday, 10 a.m., in Broadway Mortuary Chapel. Burial was in the Burden Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association.

CEDAR VALE, Kan. - Maxine Helen Cloud, age 72, passed away on Friday evening, July 9, 2004, at her residence in Cedar Vale, Kan. She was born April 11, 1932 in Decatur, Ala. to David Briant and Velora (Wydner) Vest.

She was born and raised in Decatur, Ala. Her family later moved to the Santa Clara, Calif., area.

She married Fred C. Cloud on May 15, 1953 in Reno, Calif. He preceded her in death March 25, 1996. She was a dedicated mother and homemaker.

Mrs. Cloud is survived by three daughters, Diana Cloud, Pawhuska, Okla., Nancy Cloud, Chautauqua, Kan., Velora Cloud, Caney, Kan., two sons, Chris Cloud, Sedan, Kan., Danny Cloud, Cedar Vale, Kan., two brothers, Earl Vest, Decatur, Ala. and Howard Vest, nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Dovie Carter.

Her hobbies included singing and most of all entertaining her children and grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at the Havana Cemetery in Havana, Kan.

Audrey (Sandfort) Clark, age 75, a former resident of Elk City and Oak Valley, Kan., died Sept. 30, 2001 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Memorial graveside services will be held at 10 am. Saturday, June 15, 2002, at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City, Kan., interment will he under the direction of the Potts Chapel.

Audrey Clark was born May 15, 1926. She grew up in the Old Bagnell, Mo. area and spent most of her life raising a family at Lake Ozark, Mo.

She was united in marriage to J. E. (Bill) Clark and he died August 2, 1981.

Survivors include 5 daughters, Emma Clark, Oak Valley, Kan., Nancy Parsons, Albuquerque, N. Carl M. Coonrod, 76, of Winfield, former resident of Elk County, retired general contractor and rancher, died Monday, March 4, 2002. He was born June 3, 1925 in Bourbon County, Kansas to Carl Chester Coonrod and Mary T. (Simpson) Coonrod.

Visitation with family will be on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East in Wichita. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday in College Hill United Methodist Church in Wichita. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday in Pleasant View Cemetery in rural Fort Scott.

Carl was preceded in death by both of his parents, Carl C. and Mary T. Coonrod; brother, Harold Coonrod; and grandchild, Kristin Coonrod.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth L. (Blockcolsky) Coonrod; sons and daughters-in-law, Carl F. and Donna of Elk Falls, Kansas; Randy and Jacquie of Wichita; stepmother, Beulah Davis of Conway Springs, Kansas; sisters, Joyce Coulter of Socorro, New Mexico; Rosetta Schemenauer of St. Ignace, Michigan; half-sister, Kathi Maher-Elier of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren and spouses, Sandra and Steve Ackley of Wilmington, Delaware; Christopher and Cami Coonrod of El Dorado, Kansas; Nicole and Justin Parks, Laurie Coonrod, Morgan Coonrod, all of Wichita; step grandchildren and spouses, Chris and Diana Freeman, Rick and D. MRS. MABLE M. CORLE

Mable Marie Corle passed away on Friday, April 20, 2001, at the William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield, Kansas. She was 76 years of age and a resident of Moline. Mable was born on January 9, 1925 at the family home in Grenola, KS to Samuel and Mary Eva (Vickery) Sweet. After graduating from Grenola High School in 1943, she became a Telegrapher for the Santa Fe Railroad.

On November 14, 1945, she married Billy Van Corle and to this union was born three daughters and one son. This marriage later ended. Mable was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad at several locations in Oklahoma and Kansas before being transferred to Burden, KS in 1956, where she worked as an Agent. She was transferred to Moline, KS in 1974 and worked until becoming disabled in an accident. She retired from the Santa Fe Railroad after 31 years of service.

Mable accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of the Moline Christian Church.

She is survived by her son, Samuel Corle and his wife, Maria, Winfield, KS, her daughters, Dorothy Whiterock and her husband, Johnnie, Winfield, KS, Barbara VanRoyen and her husband, Russell, Moline, KS and Billie Jo Amirifar and her husband, Majid, Yazd, Iran, her brother, Raymond Sweet, Topeka, KS, her sisters, Evelyn Futhey, Grenola and Shirley Gillespie, Moline, KS, seven grandchildren, six step grandchildren. three great grandchildren and ten step great grandchildren. Her parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2001, at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard, with Pastor Ted Smith of the Moline Christian Church officiating. Wanda Mills was the organist with Carol Smith and Iola Fulgham singing In The Garden and Until We Meet Again. The casket bearers were Carl Mac Arndt, Gary Arndt, Ray Ball, Joe Christman, Jim Futhey, Robert Futhey, John Sweet and Brent VanRoyen. Interment was held at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola, KS.

Memorials have been established with the Elk Manor Nursing Home and the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may he left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard, KS.

MRS. DELLA M. COX

Della Marie Cox passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2005, at the Howard Twilight Manor in Howard, Kan. She was 89 years of age and a long time resident of Howard. Della was born on Sept. 23, 1915 near Howard to Wiley Michael and Gertie (Richardson) Friend. She attended Lower Paw Paw rural school and grew to womanhood in the Howard area.

Della was employed at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka during World War II before moving to Erie, Kan. On June 1, 1948 she married Millard Albert Cox at Howard, Kan. They farmed northeast of Howard for several years until moving back to Howard in 1956. Della was a devoted wife and mother and dedicated her life to caring for her family. She also served as a Cub Scout leader when her children were young. Her husband preceded her in death on June 29, 1986.

Della enjoyed playing the harmonica and guitar, as well as singing. She enjoyed growing flowers and spent time knitting, crocheting and sewing clothes for her family. On June 17, 1989, she became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and currently attended the Kingdom Hall of Elk Falls.

She is survived by a son, Ivan Hebb, San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Julia Brenner, Howard; a daughter-in-law, Gayla Cox, Sedan; a brother, Vern Friend, Howard; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, John; two sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at the Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard, Kan., with Rick Reeves of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Elk Falls, Kan. officiating. Interment was held in Grace Lawn Cemetery at Howard.

Memorials have been established with the Howard Twilight Manor and the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements are being made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

MR. CARL CRIGER

Carl Russell Criger died Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at his home in Howard, Kansas. He was 83 years of age. He was born on July 4, 1918 on the family farm six miles northwest of Howard, to Albert Louis and Ella May (Russell) Criger.

He attended Lower Paw Paw rural school and graduated from Howard High School in 1937. Carl attended one year at Kansas State University before returning to help his father on the Criger farm. In 1940, he married Betty McClure at Howard, Kansas and to this union was born a son, Patrick Ray and a daughter, Carla May. This marriage ended in 1965.

Carl enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1943. After six months of training, he was assigned to the 8th Air Force as a ball turret gunner on a B-24 bomber.

Carl returned home to Elk County and went into the oil business. Carl was also a livestock producer for many years. On March 2, 1967, he married Frances Mae (Wallace) Hobson at El Paso, Texas and they made their home in Howard until his death.

In the early 1970’s, Carl was employed by the Elk River Watershed District. He retired in 1987 and enjoyed fishing with his wife, Frances, loafing at Waldo’s Barber Shop, mowing the yard and making garden. He enjoyed spending time doing nice things for other people.

He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #1186 in Independence, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #138 in Wichita and American Legion Carter-Rader Post #149 in Howard. He was a long time member of the Howard United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; his daughter, Carla Golden of Kansas City, Missouri; his son, Patrick Criger of Kirbyville, Missouri; his stepsons, Richard Hobson of Corrales, New Mexico, Jerald Hobson and William Hobson, both of El Paso, Texas; his brother, Jim Criger of Howard; his sister, Louise Harrod of Howard; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2002 at the Howard United Methodist United Methodist Church with Rev. Kibum Kim and Pastor Robin Haines officiating. Susie Perkins provided selected piano music. The casket bearers were Frank Hobson, Jerry Hobson, Richard Hobson, Bob Nungesser, Gene Perkins and Weldon Russell. Military funeral honors were conducted by american Legion Carter-Rader Post #149 at Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard. Memorials have been established with the Howard United Methodist Church and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements are being made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

MR. ARTHUR L. CRUPPER

SEDAN - Arthur Laveme “Red” Crupper passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004 at the Fredonia Regional Hospital in Fredonia, Kan. He was 86 years of age, a resident of Sedan, Kan. and formerly of Howard.

Red was born on Nov. 19, 1918 at Delaware, Okla. to Willis Preston and Elizabeth Irene (Parker) Crupper. He attended elementary school at Dearing, Kan. and graduated from Tyro High School in 1938.

On Nov. 23, 1941, he united in marriage with Rose Johannah Schipper at Caney, Kan. Red entered the United States Army on Oct. 17, 1942 and served his country during World War II. After being discharged in 1945, Red became employed by Kansas Gas and Electric Company and worked as a lineman and agent until his retirement.

Red was a member of the Howard Rotary Club, the Boy Scouts of America, Sedan V.F.W., the Kansas Sunflower Shooting Dog Club and served as a Little League and Pee Wee baseball coach for 27 consecutive years. He was a member of the Humboldt Christian Church in Humboldt, Kan.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; his sons, Larry, Sedan, Steve, Edgerton, Kan. and Don, Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Neal, Portland, Ore.; a sister, Ramona Wierima, Yacolt, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Stanley “Bo” Crupper, his parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at the Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard, with Earl Tresner of the Jonesburg Community Church south of Sedan, Kan. officiating. Joan Greer and Walter Wigton sang “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace”. Military funeral honors was conducted by the United States Army Honor Guard from Ft. Riley, Kan.

A memorial has been established with the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter. Contnbutions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
