Charles Ned Buchele passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2000, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Missouri. He was 94 years of age and a long time resident of Moline, KS. Ned, as he was known, was born on June 24, 1906 at Lafayette, Indiana to Charles and Myrtle (Rittenour) Buchele and his mother passed away when Ned was two years of age.
He came to Kansas in 1910 and lived with his aunts until his father married Bessie Fisher. Ned graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1923 and attended Kansas State University at Manhattan. He was employed by the National Toy Company in Kansas City, Missouri for a few years.
On February 15, 1929, he married Thelma Grace Noland at Cedar Vale, KS and to this union was born two sons, Marvin and Keith. Ned began farming east of Cedar Vale in 1929 and moved his family to a farm northwest of Moline in 1939 and they later moved to a farm near Grenola in 1943.
Thelma preceded him in death on November 2, 1956 and Ned continued to farm near Grenola before moving to Moline in 1966. On July 24, 1966, he married Ina (Oliver) Julian at Burlington, KS and they made their home in Moline. Ned retired from farming in 1974 and remained a resident of Moline until moving to Pleasant Valley Manor at Sedan, KS in 1998. Ina preceded him in death on February 25, 1998.
Ned served many years on the Elk County Soil Conservation Board and the Elk County Council on Aging. He was a long time member of the Moline United Methodist Church and had served as chairman of the trustees.
He is survived by his sons, Keith of Coffeyville, KS and Marvin of Winfield, KS, his half brothers, Luther Buchele of Ann Arbor, MI and Dr. Wesley Buchele of Ames, IA, three grandchildren, four step grandchildren, two great grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. Ned was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma and his wife, Ina, his parents and his stepmother, his brother, Dr. Robert Buchele and his half brothers, Paul Buchele, Julian Buchele and Dr. Matthew Buchele.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 9, 2000, at the Moline United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Parsons officiating.
Shae Watkins was the organist with Lloyd 0. Zimmerman singing In The Garden and Amazing Grace. The casket bearers were David Brace, John Clark, Delbert Lampson, Lawrence Malone, Harold Shee and Elmer Ward. Interment was held in Greenlawn Cemetery at Grenola.
Memorials have been established with the Moline United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be left with the funeral home. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard, KS.
JUDGE JAMES P. BUCHELE - Submitted by Billy L. Pate-Smith
Judge James Paul Buchele, 61, Topeka, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Midland Hospice House. He was born September 25, 1941, in Cedar Vale, Kansas, the son of Paul and Helen Fettig Buchele.
He graduated from Cedar Vale High School and received a BS of Agricultural Economics from Kansas State University in 1962, a Juris Doctorate from Washburn University in 1966, and a Master in Judicial Studies from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1988. Judge Buchele served as a State Representative in the Kansas Legislature for four terms, from 1965 to 1972. From 1966 to 1975, he was in private law practice in Topeka, and from 1970 to 1972, he served as Topeka City Attorney. He served as the Administrative Assistant for Congresswoman Martha Keys from 1975 to 1977. In 1977, he was appointed by President Jimmy Carter, as U.S. Attorney, District of Kansas, where he served until 1981. He became a District Judge in 1981, and served until his retirement in October, 1999. Since retirement, he sat as a Senior Judge on the Kansas Court of Appeals, and has served as a mediator/arbitrator and was a partner of Associates in Dispute Resolution. He was admitted to practice in the Kansas Supreme Court, U.S. District Court, District of Kansas, U.S. Court of Appeals, Tenth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a member of the American and Kansas Bar Associations, American Trial Lawyers Association, Kansas District Judges Association, American Judicature Society, and was a Kansas Bar Foundation Fellow.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Cathedral, and served as President in 2002 of the Topeka south Rotary Club. He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at Kansas State University and the Phi Alpha Delta fraternity at Washburn University. He was past president of Topeka Civic Theatre, Thunderbolt Track Club and Topeka Ballet.
He was married to Bonnie Cadwalader on December 28, 1965. They divorced. He married Paula Norden on October 3, 1998, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include his mother, Helen Buchele, Topeka; a daughter, Amy Buchele-Ash, and her husband, Gregory Ash, Lawrence; a son, Bradley Buchele, Lake Waukomis, MO; two step-daughters, Krista Norden, West Chester, PA, and Jaelle Norden, Topeka; a sister, Verona Buchele, Raytown, MO; a brother, Kenneth Buchele, Emporia, KS; and a granddaughter, Isabel Ash, Lawrence.
Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Episcopal Cathedral. Private inurnment will be at a later date in Ozro Cemetery, Hewins, KS. The family requests no flowers.
MRS. BARBARA BUCK
Barbara Lee Buck, 76, of Grouse Valley Manor, Dexter, died February 25, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
She was born July 4, 1925, in Lavern Okla., to Leah (Sutton) and Joe R. Knoble. The family moved to Turlock, Calif., in 1938. On November 11, 1964, she married Robert Buck in California. In 1967 they moved to Grove, Okla., and managed a resort until moving to Dexter in 1990.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Buck, Dexter.
Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Dexter Cemetery with the Rev. Norman Reeves officiating. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
MRS. FLORENCE L. BUCK
Florence Louise Buck, age 63, of Sedan passed away Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan. She was born March 20, 1945 in Sedan to James "Pete" and Bernice (Cornelsen] Slaughter. She attended school in Iola before graduating from Leon High School in Leon, Kan.
On Sept. 8, 1967 she married Carl Buck. In the summer of 2004 they came to Sedan from Iola. Mr. Buck preceded her in death in 2004.
She worked as a Certified Nurse's aide at nursing homes before moving to Sedan. She was a member of the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She enjoyed needle point crafts and genealogy.
She is survived by one sister, Ilene Kingsley of Elgin; one brother, Jim Slaughter of Pratt; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Buck and her parents.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009 at the Elgin Cemetery n Elgin, with Hospice Chaplain Vfike Graham of Coffeyville officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Buck, parents, James and Cora (Bible) Jordan and one brother, Kenneth Jordan.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jordan and Lelia Buck of Sedan, Kan., three grandchildren and seven grandchildren, P.J. and Shelly Buck, Addison, Sarah and Paul, Sedan, Kan., John and Kay Hill, Jordan and John Tyler, Sedan, Kan., Andy and Tina Buck, Ellen and Nathan, Altamont, Kan. and numerous relatives and friends.
Gladys attended school in Ramona, Okla. and was very proud to have never missed a day of school in 12 years. On June 15, 1932, she married Paul Buck in Claremore, Okla. They resided in Pawhuska for their lifetime. Gladys was active in many organizations, Oklahoma Cowbells, Home Extension, Oklahoma Livestock Association and served on the election board.
She was known as a real “cowboy.” She rode horseback, worked and cared for cattle, anything a man could do she could do. She even got her hair cut at the barber shop. After she had helped with all the ranch work, she would fix all the hands one of the best meals in Oklahoma. You rarely saw Gladys without her cowboy hat, even when she wore a dress, which wasn’t very often.
Gladys was an avid gardener and egg lady, always delivering produce and eggs to friends and family. She was known for playing a good hand of pitch and waiting patiently to pick Paul up from the smokehouse.
Mom’s love was her family, friends, ranching, riding old Mac and her dogs, but it is finally time for her to rest and we will now take care of the cows and the place as she watches with Paul from above. You will be missed.
MRS. SALLY J. BUMGARNER - Submitted by Billy L. Pate-Smith
Sally Jane Sagar was born in Union county, Ohio, October 7, 1840 and passed away at her home in Caney, Kansas, January 26, 1931; at the age of 90 years, 3 months, 19 days.
She was married to Martin Bumgarner in Iowa, Sept. 10, 1859. To this union were born fourteen children, five of whom preceded her in death.
She came with her husband to Kansas in 1866 and settled in Cherokee county. In 1870 they moved to Chautauqua county and homesteaded a farm near Wauneta, where they lived until 1902 when they moved to Cedar Vale. Then in 1906 moved to Caney.
She and her husband were converted in 1870 and became charter members of the first church organization in what was then Howard county, now Chautauqua and Elk counties. She gave a long life of service in the Methodist Episcopal church.
In the early day their home was used for Sunday school and preaching services, and was the scene of many great revival meetings.
Mrs. Bumgarner leaves to mourn her going: nine children, Mrs. Ora Pate, Wauneta, Kas.; Perry Bumgarner, Fayetteville, Ark.; Wallace Bumgarner, Janesville, Wis. Mrs. Ida Florer, Teriton, Okla.; Mrs. Delia Parker, Yoder, Wyo.; Walter Bumgarner, Ozark, Ark.; Mrs. Luella Ramsey, Hamilton, Mo.; Chester Bumgarner, Kansas City, Mo., and Lycurgus Bumgarner, Tulsa, Okla.; thirty grandchildren, forty-five great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday the 27th at 1:3O p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev, J. B. Cooprider. Music was furnished by Mrs. L. F. Chess and Miss Mary McKee, with Mrs. Kenneth Fleming accompanist.
Her request for no flowers was compiled with and she was laid to rest in the Grant Creek cemetery beside her husband, who preceded her in death Apr. 3, 1929.
Andrew Jackson Burch was born April 16, 1838, in Jesmon County, Kentucky, and departed this life at his home residence, eleven miles north of Sedan, February 28, 1928, at 10 p.m., age 88 years, eleven months and twelve days.
He moved with his parents to Indiana when 15 years of age and lived there until the Civil War when he joined the 43rd Indiana Co., E, in which he served three years. He was mustered out in 1865.
He came to Kansas in 1871. He joined the church and was baptized in an early day. He was a young man when he came here and took a claim north of Sedan which was then Howard county, now Chautauqua. He cut the forest trees that made his log cabin, chinked with mud, with dirt floor and clapboard roof. He then began a life of hardship and danger like many early settlers of Kansas.
He married Mary Ellen Weatherman and they lived happily until death called.
"Uncle Jack', as he was called, was a man who friendship was as pure gold. The ties of friendship to him were those which lasted all through life, and friends of pioneer days were his true friends in old age. He was an honest, upright man, a good soldier and a true friend. He was kind and thoughtful in his home and with his family.
He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, four daughters and four sons, (one daughter died when but a small child), Mrs. Dilla Palmer, Mrs. Stella Coover, John, Durston, Denver, and Ray who remains at home, all of Sedan, Mrs. Iva Byrnes of Elk Falls and Mrs. Minna Cunningham of near Moline, all of whom were at his bedside during his illness which only lasted a few days.
He is survived by twenty-five grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Union Chapel Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G.L. Eslick of the Sedan Christian church. Interment in Union Chapel cemetery. A large attendance of friends joined with the sorrowing relatives in paying final respects to his memory. Beautiful music was furnished by a quartette composed of Mrs. Ed Casteel, Mrs. A.J. Floyd, Mrs. John Raybourn and Mr. Robert Harmon. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers.
Final military honors were accorded the deceased by a firing squad and bugler from the American Legion. Those composing the squad were Earl Fish, captain, M.L. Jones, John Dalton, O. Naut, Ben Funk, O.R. Robbins, Bert Sherrod, Bill Dennis, bugler.
DELBERT BURCH - Submitted by Irma Ward
Delbert Burch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Denver Burch, was born January 24, 1915. He departed this life September 9, 1927. Age 12 years, 7 months and 16 days.
On September 3rd he was operated on for appendicitis. He seemed to get along nicely until the 6th when locked bowels caused his death. All that loving hands could do was done to relieve his suffering but he had to go. He was a very bright little fellow and was beloved by all who knew him.
He leaves to sorrow because of his going his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Denver Burch, two brothers, Oley Russell and Eugene Joseph, one sister, Mary Ilene, and other relatives and a host of dear friends.
Funeral services were held at Union Chapel church, conducted by Rev. G.L. Eslick. Music wa furnished by a ladies quartet composed of Mrs. Will D. Kinnaman, Mrs. Ward Andrews, Mrs. Roy Foster and Georgia Martin. Dannie Stough sang a beautiful solo, "The Lord Knows Why' with Mary Graham accompanist.
DR. DOYLE O. BURCH, O.D. - Submitted by Charlotte Lamb Bennett
Dr. Doyle 0. Burch, O.D., 72, of Caney, died Thursday morning, March 18, 1993, at his home.
Dr. Burch was born April 1, 1920 near Sedan, to John W. and Nella Alice (Lamb) Burch. He was raised in Sedan and graduated from Sedan High School in 1936. He then attended Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas from 1938 to 1941. In 1941 he entered the service and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a Master Sergeant. In 1946, he entered school at the North Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL graduating in 1948.
On January 19, 1946, in Sedan, he was married to Thelma (Mantooth) Robertson. They came to Caney in 1950 and Dr. Burch established his practice which he and his wife operated until his retirement in 1974.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Roger I. of Caney and John K. of White Plains, N.Y.; a daughter, Marthena Draper of Caney; two brothers, Carrol of Sedan and Wesley of Peru a sister, Beatrice Kuykendall of Oceanside, CA; and three grandchildren, David Draper, Murfreesboro, TN, Christian Burch, BYU, Provo, UT, and Amy Burch, Caney.
Services were held Saturday, Mar. 20, 1993, in the First Baptist Church at Caney with burial in Sunnyside Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church Building fund or to the Mercy Hospital Home Care Services, Independence.
MRS. JEANNE L. BURCH
Jeanne L. Burch, age 78, of Sedan, Kansas, passed away early Monday morning, June 25, 2001, at Jane Phillips Hospital in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
Jeanne was born February 7, 1923 in Severy, KS to Arthur and Alta (Pershall) Tippie. She was raised in Sedan and graduated from Sedan High School in 1942.
On November 11, 1944, Jeanne married 2nd Lt. Carrol Burch, USMC, in Oceanside, CA. She enjoyed her next twenty-six years as an active career military wife and mother. The family lived in many locations over those years, but in 1965, she returned to Sedan while Carrol served a tour in Vietnam. Upon Carrol’s retirement from the Marine Corps in 1968, the couple decided to remain in Sedan. In 1977, Carrol and Jeanne opened Burch’s Department Store and operated the store until 1984. They spent the next few years golfing, fishing and traveling. Jeanne especially enjoyed spending time with her husband, her children, her grandchildren and her friends.
Jeanne is survived by her husband, Carrol, of the home, two daughters, Pamalyn Barnes, Independence, KS and Cindy King, Sedan, KS, five grandchildren, Gary Todd Barnes, Palmer, AK, Tracy Barnes, Tucson, AZ, Jason Godfrey, Grain Valley, MO, Matthew Godfrey, Arkansas City, KS and Daniel Godfrey, Ft. Sill, OK and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services for Jeanne L. Burch were held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Sedan, KS. Mike Morris officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan, KS.

MR. JOHN W. BURCH
John Wesley Burch, age 97, of Cancy, passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 at the Caney Nursing Center in Caney.
He was born Jan. 29, 1911 north of Sedan, to John Walter and Cora (Vanderhoof) Burch. He attended Sedan High School. He married Bessie Bright on Jan. 23, 1931. She preceded him in death April 20, 1988. He later married Clara Haines on Aug. 11, 1994 in Sedan. He was a rancher and lived in Chautauqua County all of his life until moving to Caney in 1993.
He is survived by his wife Clara Burch of the home in Caney; one son, Lynn Burch and his wife Julie of Olathe; two step-sons, Mike Smith of San Pablo, Calif., and Ron Smith and his wife Linda all of San Pablo. Calif.; one step-daughter, Cindy Williams and her husband Bob of San Pablo, Calif.; one brother. Carrol Burch of Sedan; special nephew Roger Burch and his wife Kyle of Cancy; one grandchild; seven step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and twelve step-great-grandchiidrcn.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bessie, one brother and one sister.
Family and friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.
Funerat services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008 at the First Assembly of God Church in Caney, with Mike Morris officiating. Interment will follow at the Sunny-side Cemetery in Caney.

Funeral services for John W. Burch, 86, a lifetime resident of Chautauqua county, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 12, in the First Baptist church with Rev. Doris Nix officiating. Interment was in the Greenwood cemetery. Graves Baird Funeral Home was in charge of the services. He died Saturday morning, February 10, (1973) in the Sedan City hospital.
Mr. Burch was born June 10, 1886, in Chautauqua county, the son of Andrew J. and Mary Ellen (Weatherman) Burch. On February 17, 1909 he was married to Cora Vanderhoof, to this union were born two children, Beatrice and Wesley. Mrs. Cora Burch died in 1912.
On March 14, 1915 he was married to Nella Lamb at Havana. To this union were born two sons, Doyle and Carrol. Mr. Burch was a farmer and rancher and a member of the First Baptist church. He and his wife had lived north of Sedan in the Union Chapel neighborhood for 58 years.
Survivors include his wife, Nella, of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Beatrice) Glenn of Oceanside, California; three sons, Wesley Burch of Peru, Dr. Doyle Burch of Caney, and Judge Carrol Burch; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Cunningham of Elk Falls; a brother Billy Ray Burch of Longton; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
MRS. MARY ELLEN BURCH - Submitted by Irma Ward
Mrs. Mary Ellen Burch, age 93, 7 months, 18 days, passed away at her home near Longton, Wednesday, September 30 (1942). She was born February 12, 1849 near Sullivan, Indiana. Mary Ellen Weatherman and Andrew J. Burch were united in marriage (3/1)1865. They came to Chautauqua county shortly after their marriage where they homesteaded on the North Caney and reared their family of eight children in a log cabin, undergoing many hardships of the pioneer days. One daughter, Rosy, died at the age of seven years.
Mr. Burch, a Civil War veteran preceded his wife in death in 1928. After his death Mrs. Burch sold the home place to a son, Durston, and moved a short distance where she resided until her death. When a young girl she united with the Methodist Church and lived a devout Christian life throughout her 93 years.
Surviving relatives are the eight children, Mrs. W.G. Palmer, Mrs. A.B. Coover both of Sedan, John W., and J.D. both of Union Chapel, Ray and Denver, Mrs. M.E. Byrnes all of Longton, Mrs. Pete Cunningham of Moline. There are 23 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Union Chapel Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Dr. John W. Harbaugh officiating assisted by Rev. Myers.
Mrs. Dwyer Hays sang a solo, "Goodnight Here But Good Morning There'. A quartet composed of Mrs. Hays, Mrs. A.J. Floyd, Roy Taylor and Ben Funk sang, "It Is Well With My Soul" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Mrs J.O. Tulloss accompanied at the piano.
Pallbearers were Carl Coover, Vernie Palmer, Paul Palmer, Logan Cunningham, Clyde Burch and Wesley Burch, all grandsons of the deceased.
Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Dave Sturgeon of Centerville, Mrs. and Mrs. Vernie Palmer of Oklahoma City, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Taylor and Betty Joan of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mr. and Mrs. Carol Coover and children, Dick and Marjorie of Eureka, Mrs. Cleo Warring and E.L. Warring of Sedan. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Palmer of Peru, Mr. and Mrs. Logan Cunningham of Moline, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Coover and Mrs. W.G. Palmr of Sedan.
Mary Ellen Burch was the daughter of James and Lucy Pitts Weatherman. All buried in the Union Chapel Cemetery.
MRS. NELLA A. BURCH - Submitted by Charlotte Lamb Bennett
Nella Alice Burch, 89, died at the Pleasant Valley Manor Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1983.
She was the daughter of Fred and Emma (Friddle) Lamb. She attended school rural school at Caney Valley, Hillsdale, Otter Creek and Eli.
In the early 1860's her great grandfather, Dr. Ezekiel Lamb, an early Havana resident and his adult children and their families homesteaded and or purchased several farms just northwest of Havana in the Bee Creek - Illinois Creek area. Around 1900, all the Lambs including her grandfather, Elroy Lamb. sold out and moved to Idaho, the others to Canada. Fred Lamb and his sister Belle Kelso, and their families remained around Havana.
Mrs. Burch taught schools at Fly Creek near Hale and Old Plymouth, 15 miles north of Sedan. On March 14, 1915 she and John W. Burch were married. He died Feb. 10, 1973. They lived on the same ranch six miles north of Sedan until John's death. She then moved to Sedan. Mrs. Burch was the last surviving member of Burch children or spouses.
She is survived by two sons. Doyle Burch of Caney and Carrol Burch of Sedan; John's two children who she reared and adopted, Beatrice (Burch) Glenn of Vista. Calif., and Wesley Burch of Peru; a half sister, Emma Lamb Timmons, living in Oregon; nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday, Sept. 29, at 2:00 p.m. in the Graves Memorial Chapel at Caney, with burial following in the Greenwood Cemetery at Sedan, KS.
MRS. INDIANA BURDEN
Indiana Ruggles was born near Brownsburg, Indiana, Jan. 16, 1846, and passed away at her home in Cedar Vale Kansas, Feb. 5, 1922.She united in marriage with John Burden on Jan. 13, 1866. To this union were born six children, three of whom survive her. A.B. Burden, Virgie B. Johnson and Elsie A. Stout. She also leaves three sisters, Mary E. Jelf, of Sedan, Kansas; Caroline Brown of Lewis, Indiana and Rosetta Payne of Indianapolis, Indiana.
She came to Kansas in 1871, and settled on a claim in Chautauqua County, one mile north of Round Mound. Her husband preceded her in death, five years last July.
She united with the church in early girlhood and was faithful and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at the time of her death. She was a member of the Stoneriver Women's Relief Corps of Sedan, Kansas.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church at 11 o'clock Monday morning by the pastor, F.B. Benson, and the body laid to rest at the Round Mound cemetery.

Harriet M. Mitchell was born in Floyd county, Virginia, in 1853; departed this life Feb. 11, 1927, at the age of 73 years, five months and 14 days.
She was united in marriage in 1871 to J. H. Hoff. To this union were born three children — Harry M., Alice A., Gay H., of whom only Harry M. Hoff, of Elston, Iowa, survives her.
Later she was married to Morgan W. Burdette. To this union six children were born — Ottie B., of Hutchinson, Albert E. of Tampa, Florida, Hollie R. of Cedar Vale, Mrs. J. A. Elliott of Wauneta, Silas R. and Robert M. of Leeds. She also had two stepsons, James L. and Frasier R Burdette of Diagonal, Iowa, three stepdaughter — Mrs. Mike Ogara, Mrs. Jake Etnoyer, and Mrs. Shepard of Denver, Colo. All survive her but the husband and Robert who preceded her in death.
She has lived a consecrated Christian life. She was converted at the early age of 15 years and united with the U. B. church of Spencer, W. Va., and later joined the Protestant Methodist church of which she was still a member. Besides the relatives to mourn she leaves a host of friends that she has accumulated during the thirty-five years in this vicinty.
With no fears for the future she passed quietly to the Great Beyond, where labor ends and rewards begin. Funeral services were held at the Leeds church Feb. 13, at 2 p. m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. J. Fletcher.
MRS. MABEL R. BURDETTE
Mabel Ruby Burdette, age 97, longtime resident of Grenola, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday morning October 3, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.
Born April 7, 1904 in rural Elk County, Kansas, she was one of four children born to Peter David and Emma Esta (Underwood) French. At age seven, she and her family moved to a farm in rural Chautauqua County, Kansas. She attended school at Shiloh Rural School. As a young girl, she helped with chores on the farm and even helped “put up” hay. In her early twenties, before she married, she helped the family build their new farm house.
On November 23, 1924, at the Grenola Methodist Parsonage, she was united in marriage to Clarence Franklin Burdette. The couple made their home on a farm in Chautauqua County. She was a homemaker and devoted wife of a farmer and rancher. Mr. Burdette preceded her in death on December 10, 1981. In May of 1986, her farm home burned and she moved to Grenola, KS. She lived in Grenola nearly ten years before moving to Arkansas City so that her daughters could care for her.
She was a member of the Grenola United Methodist Church, where she was involved in the United Methodist Women's organization, as well as the Pleasant Valley HDU. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and reading.
Her family includes her son, Darrell D. Burdette and wife, Louise, rural Chautauqua County, KS, her daughters, Doris L. Brentlinger and husband, Marshall, Arkansas City, KS and DeLoris L. Groene and husband, Francis, rural Winfield, KS, her sister, Ethel L. Wilmeth, Mulvane, KS, ten grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ira D. French and a sister, C. Fayc Payne. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, October 5, 2001, at the Grenola United Methodist Church in Grenola, KS. Interment followed at Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola, KS.
A memorial has been established in Mrs. Burdette's name for the Grenola United Methodist Church. Contributions maybe made through the funeral home. Miles Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Morgan Webster Burdett died at his home one and one-half miles south of Leeds, Kansas January 3rd, 1911, at the age of 72 years, 5 months and 12 deays.
He was born in Ripley, Jackson county, West Virginia, July 22nd 1838. At the age of five years he removed from Riply to Reedy, Roane county. On February 13th, 1868. He was united in marriage to Mrs. Sarah F. Boggs of Reedy, West Virginia. To this union were born five children four sons and one daughter one son dying in infancy and one dying at the age of 3 months and 3 days. Two sons James L. Burdett and Frasier R. Burdett of Ringgold county, Iowa, and the daughter Mrs. Maggie Ogara of Denver, Colorado survive him. He is also survived by three step-children, two daughters by his first wife, Mrs. Elnoyer and Mrs. Sheppard both of Denver, Colorado, and one step-son of his present wife Harry Hoff of Elson, Iowa. His wife Sarah F. Burdett died January 3rd, 1878.
On November 15th, 1879 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Harriet Hoff of Spencer, West Virginia. To this union were born six children, five sons and one daughter. Five sons are Ottie, Albert, Hollie, Robert and Silas. The daughter is Mrs. James Elliott. All were at his side when death came excepting one son James L. Burdett and his step-son Harry Hoff.
He is survived by his widow and children, one sister of Charleston, West Virginia and one brother of Sandy, West Virginia. At the age of 71 years, he was converted and united with the Baptist church at Leeds Kansas, and since that time he has been a devoted Christian. A few days before he passed away he expressed a willingness to go.

Last Rites for Asphyxiation Victim Sunday
Frank W. Burger, 45 Found Dead in Car Friday Evening
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at five o’clock at the family home at Chautauqua for Frank W. Burger, 45, who was found dead in his car Friday evening at the Fowler school house, five miles east of Sedan. Death was attributed by Dr Carl M Smith, county coroner to asphyxiation.
The body was discovered by some men and boys who had gone to the school grounds to play softball. The discovery was made about seven o’clock Friday evening. Mr Burger had been employed by the Stanolin Oil Company for twenty-five years. He had been located in Western Kansas and is thought to have driven to this locality Friday morning.
Survivors are his mother and father, Mr and Mrs T. F. Burger, one brother Fred Burger, and his twelve year old son, Eugene Franklin.
Mr. Burger was born at Chautauqua March 9, 1902 and attended school at Chautauqua and Neodesha.
The Rev. Frank E Ryerson, Pastor of the Sedan Methodist church, preached the funeral sermon. Interment was in the Chautauqua cemetery under the direction of the Baird Funeral Home.
MRS. LEONA BURGER
CHAUTAUQUA, Kan. Leona Ruth Burger, 89, of Chautauqua, Kan. died Tuesday morning, Dec. 30, 2003, in her home.
She was born Sept. 26, 1914 at El Dorado, Kan. to Earl and Delia (Kimberlin) Cross. She grew up and attended elementary school at Median, Kan. and graduated from El Dorado High School.
On Jan. 11, 1936, she married Fred Burger at Lyons, Kan. Following their marriage they moved to Chautauqua, where they operated Burger Grocery Store and Feed Store with his parents. They also farmed. Mr. Burger preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 1981.
Mrs. Burger was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one son, Duane Burger, Chautauqua, Kan.; one daughter, Dorothy Andrade, Chautauqua, Kan.; three grandchildren, one great grandchild and one great great grandchild.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, in Oak Hill Cemetery at Chautauqua with Rev. Carroll Redwine officiating.
The family suggests memorials to the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter and contributions may be left with the funeral home.

Benjamin Alonzo Burks, born in Webster county, Mo., October 12, 1873. Departed this life July 17, 1930 at the age of 56 yeara, 9 months and 5 days, following a long illness. He was married to Lititia Forbes in 1894. To this union five children were born. His wife and two children preceded him in death. Three children survive him: Mrs. R. F. Thrash, L. D. Burks and Mrs. E. M. Payne. In 1914 he was united in marriage to Molly Wheeler. To this union were born seven children. The wife and children survive. He is also survived by two brothers: W. A. Burks of Parsons, Kans. and Lloyd Burks of Los Angeles, California. Two sisters; Mrs. Della White and Mrs. Nona Wyman of Los Angeles.
He was united with the Baptist church four years ago at Rankin, Okla.
Funeral services were conducted at Monett church Friday at 1 p.m. by Rev. L. E. Griffith of the Baptist church of Sedan. The remains were laid to rest in the Greenwood cemetery at Sedan.
The bereaved family have the sympathy of the community in their great sorrow.
MRS. ELLA BURNS
NEODESHA - Ella Martha Burns, age 88, of Neodesha, formerly of Elk City, Kan., passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at her home in Neodesha.
Ella was born Feb. 12, 1915 in Ponca City, Okla. to Ernest Elvin and Lois Beryle (Miller) Mason. She was raised by her aunt in Wichita. On Jan. 20, 1935, Ella married Clifford Burns in Wichita. They had lived in Buxton, Kan. They made their home west of Elk City from 1950 to 1996. They moved to Neodesha in 1996. Mr. Bums preceded her in death on March 30, 1998.
Mrs. Burns was a homemaker and she also worked at the Job Services in Fredonia and Neodesha. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and she did volunteer work in genealogy at the church.
Ella is survived by four children, Ronald W. Burns, Fredonia, Margaret M. Andrews, Rolla, Kan., Lois June Peel, Peru, and Jack E. Burns, Abilene, Kan., 21 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Ronald, one daughter, Ruth Ann Richardson and three brothers, one who was her twin.
Graveside services were held at the Oakhill Cemetery in Elk City on Friday, March 21, 2003, at 2 p.m.

Josie Viola Harkrader Burns, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Harkradar, was born in Chautauqua county near Sedan, May 8, 1905. She departed this life July 18, 1930, at Sand Springs, Okla., aged 25 years, two months and 10 days.
She grew to womanhood in this community and was converted to the Christian faith and united with the Baptist church of Sedan in 1926. On May 1, 1926, she was united in marriage to Mr. Herman Burns. Her surviving relatives are her husband and two small children, Barbara Jean and Charles Wilburn, mother and father and eleven brothers and sisters. Willie Harkrader of Sedan, Hazel Fielding of Peru, Minnie Spire of Peru, day Jessie Spire of Oklahoma City, Beatrice Rowley of Lyons, Kans., Mildred Hopkins of Peru, Harold Harkrader of Sedan, Charles Harkrader of Cassville, Mo., Granville Harkrader of Winfield, Gurtha Brown of Sedan and Clifford Harkrader of Sedan, also several nieces and nephews and other relatives. One brother died in infancy.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church in Sedan at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 20, conducted by the Rev. L. H. Griffith. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery.
Arabelle Burton, 98, Topeka, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 1998, at a Topeka nursing home where she had been several years.
She was born Feb. 25, 1900, in Sedan, to John and Belle Elam Swinney, and spent most of her life in the Sedan community. She moved to Topeka in February 1992 to live with a son and daughter-in-law, Carmen W. and Lora V.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sedan, Rebecca Lodge, Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dorcess Society, Chatty Cathy Quilt Club and Senior Citizens in Sedan.
She was married to Eugene Burton Aug. 30, 1918, in Sedan. He died June 13, 1951. A son Carmen W. Burton, Died Dec. 22, 1993.
Besides her daughter-in-law, survivors include two grandchildren, two great-grandsons and two great-great-granddaughters.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Graves-Baird Funeral Home in Sedan. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan. Mrs. Burton will be in state after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Stormont-Vail Hospice in Topeka or to the organization of the donor's choice.

He began as a flight instructor for the U. S. Army Air Corps primary training program on May 4, 1942. He retired from the U. S. Air Force on May 1, 1970. During his military career Col. Burton was attached to Ferry Command; Air Transport Command; Strategic Air Command; North Atlantic Treaty Organization; Tactical Air Command. While with ATC, he had a tour of duty in Southeast Asia. While with NATO, he served in Turkey. Following his military career, he worked for 12 years for the Employment Services, State of Kansas before retiring. He came to Topeka in 1969 from Langlely AFB, Virginia.
He was a member of Philip Billard Post #1650 V. F. W. Military graveside services were conducted by Whiteman AFB at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 27 at Leavenworth National Cemetery. He died of cancer. He graduated from Sedan High School and attended the University of Kansas.
(NOTE: He died December 22, 1993 at Topeka. He married Lora Vivian Wilcox May 3, 1942 in Sedan. He was born in Sedan September 20, 1921. His parents are Eugene Oscar and Arabelle Swinney Burton. )
EUGENE O. BURTON DIES WEDNESDAY Eugene O. Burton, age 53, a farmer in the Grafton neighborhood, died at his home Wednesday evening.
Burton had been a pumper for Denman Oil Co. for a number of years, but due to failing health was advised to give up the pumping job several years ago. He was a veteran of World War I (Letter written by Gene to his mother while serving in the Marines on the U. S. S. Arizona at Smyrna, Turkey, Asia Minor. Sedan Times Star, June 19, 1919.) and at the time of his death was serving as Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife, Ara, one son, Carmen, of Shreveport, La., two grand children, two brothers Harry of Sedan and Theodore, of Onalaska,Wash.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3;00 p.m. at the Methodist Church with Rev. Foster Nelson officiating.

MR. IVAN W. BURTON
INDEPENDENCE - Ivan W. Burton, age 86, of Independence, Kan. passed away Sunday morning, March 30, 2003, at the Mercy Hospital in Independence.
Ivan was born March 12, 1917 in Sedan, Kan. to Harry William and Della (Wright) Burton. He was raised in Monett, Kan. and attended schools in Sedan, where he graduated from Sedan High School in 1935.
He married Laura Cleo Bird on Nov. 5, 1938 in Joplin, Mo. He began farming with his father in Monett and came to Independence in 1946, where he began his own farm, as well as as operating a dozer for numerous years. He also worked for Beechcraft in Augusta and worked as a machinist for Funk Manufacturing, where he retired when he was 62. He owned and maintained rental homes in Independence for 25 years. He was a member of the Montgomery County Soil Conservation and Modern Woodmen of America.
Ivan is survived by his wife, Cleo, Independence, Kan., two daughters, Marsha LeRoy, Independence and Cheryl Sexton, Sheldon, Mo.; five granddaughters, three great granddaughters and five great grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marjorie, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services for Ivan W. Burton will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home Chapel with Gerald Eytcheson, Priest of Epiphany Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence.

MR. EARL T. BUSBY
Earl Tillman Busby passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2000 at his home in Longton, Kansas. He was 71 years of age. Earl was born on July 3, 1929 at Longton, KS to Benjamin Tillman and Alice Lee (Zollars)Busby. He attended Longton High School and grew to manhood in the Longton community.
Earl served in the United States Army as a Paratrooper during the Korean conflict. He was married to Marian Gordon of Cedar Vale, KS from 1952 to 1976 and he was later married to Shirley Burgess from 1978 to 1993. Earl was employed as a Fire fighter in Wichita, KS during the early 1950's and later worked for Boeing Aircraft Company at the missile site in Knob Noster, MO. He was employed as a Supervisor for Lear Jet in Wichita, KS and retired from that position before moving to Longton in 1996.
He was a member of the VFW Post 1186 at Independence and Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post #388 at Moline. Earl was an avid gardener and fulfilled his lifelong dream of returning to Longton.
He is survived by his daughters, Marianne Madrigal, Katy, TX, Julie Gordon, Dallas, TX, Susan Carnahan and Robyn Busby, both of Wichita, KS, a brother, Robert Busby, Crane, TX, a sister, Zona Harris, Lakin, KS and three grandchildren. His brothers "Bud" Busby and Gerald Busby and his sisters, Doris Welch and Louis Huffman LaFortune, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 30, 2000, at the Christian Community Church in Longton with Pastor Dave Sanchez officiating. Pat Dowell was pianist. Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post #388 of Moline conducted military services. Casket bearers were Tom Brasser, Robert Busby, Jay Harris, Bill Kerschen, Carl Smoot and Mike Tramp. Interment was held at the Longton Cemetery in Longton, KS.

MR. PRESTON BUTCHER
Expired In Sedan Monday Evening After Entering Automobile Preparatory to Start Home.
Preston Butcher, aged 89, a well known pioneer citizen and Civil war veteran of this community, died suddenly Monday evening. In company with his son Ollie and wife and
Francis Riggs he had attended the showing of the Byrd south pole expedition picture at the American theatre here. After the show he had entered the automobile preparatory to returning home, when he gave a gasp and died. He had been in feeble health during recent months and under a doctor’s care. A few days prior to his death he was discharged from treatment, his doctor informing members of the family that he was making no improvement and none could in his opinion be hoped for.
Funeral services will be held at the Christian church Friday afternoon, October 31, at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Edwin G. Michael, assisted by Rev. G. L Eslick. The remains will lie in state at the Westlake Funeral Home until the hour of the funeral. Interment will be made in Greenwood cemetery, with the ceremony of the Masonic order given at the grave, and final honors by the American Legion.
Mr. Butcher’s mind was keen to the last and he kept up to date on current events. He was greatly interested in the pictures made by the Byrd south pole expedition and when their showing here was announced he keenly anticipated the opportunity to see them. During the day of their showing his anticipation of the evening enjoyment was a subject of considerable of his conversation. He was a member of Stone River G.A.R. Post and before he became enfeebled took an active part in the conduct of the affairs of the organization. His going leaves eight active members in the Post. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. Since retiring from active life he has made his home with his son, 0. P. Butcher, most of the time, but making occasional visits and prolonged stays with others of his sons and daughters.
He is survived by six sons and four daughters: 0, P. Butcher of Sedan; Hardjn Butcher of Ada Okla; Luther Butcher, Kansas City, Mo.; Frank Butcher, Blackwell, Okla.: John Butcher, Edmond, Okla.; Ellsworth Butcher, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mrs. Will Harman of Sedan; Mrs. Ernest J. Goppert of Cody. Wyo.

Austin Wade Butler, 67, died 6:29 p.m. Saturday in Jane Phillips Episcopal Memorial Medical Center.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Stumpff Funeral Home chapel with Robert L Gregg of Mustang Church of Christ, a cousin of Mr. Butler, and Art Henly of Adams Boulevard Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery where full military rites will be accorded by James H. Teel American Legion Post #105 under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home.

Mr. Butler was born on Sept 6, 1926 at Buckner, Texas to Ike Cole and Lavada Belle (Smethers) Butler. He was reared in Eastland and Carbon, Texas and was a 1944 high school graduate at Beaumont, Texas. He entered the U.S. Army in January 1945 and served until receiving an honorable discharge in December 1946. He attended Ranger Junior College at Ranger, Texas. He went to work for Phillips Petroleum Co. at Phillips, Texas on Sept. 13, 1948. Six months later he transferred to Phillips in Bartlesville. He married Ilene Mullendore on July 9, 1950, at Sedan, Kan., and they have made their home in Bartlesville since that time. He retired as a material expeditor in 1968. He was a member of Adams Boulevard Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ilene Butler, of the home; a daughter, Diane Butler, of Oklahoma City; and a son, Robert Butler of Bartlesville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Faye Jones; and a nephew, Danny Jones.
MR. DELOYD D. BUTLER
God sent Deloyd, D. “Papa” Butler to us on November 10, 1920. On May 11, 2001, he went to be with Jesus. Papa was born in Osage County, OK. He grew up in Kansas and moved to Tucson, AZ in 1939. He delivered milk for the dairy and eventually worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He retired as an Engineer in 1981.
Ranching was Papa’s favorite thing to do. He did his best to honor God in everything he did and he encouraged all of us to do the same. Papa joins his son, David, and will be greatly missed by his wife, Barbara, “Nana”, his daughter, Beverly Sharber, daughter-in-law, Beverly Butler, six grandchildren, Regina (John) Anderson, Tina (Danny) Neff, David Scott (Martha) Butler, Kristin (Clint) Schurr, Jonathon Butler, Ashley Butler, six great grandchildren, Stephen and Alicia Anderson, Andrew and Aneisa Neff and Bailey and Kacy Schurr, five sisters, Minnie Bolton, Suisun City, CA, Bonnie Gibb, Tucson, AZ, Golda (Ray) Hardy, Wilva (Kenneth) Thompson, Wanda Goode, and sister-in-law, Lucille Butler, Sedan, KS.
Papa’s wish for everyone was that they would know Jesus.
Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, at Pima Street Baptist Church. Arrangements were by Bring’s Broadway Chapel.
She was born April 14, 1912 in Quinlan, Okla. to Fred and Eva (Bain) Rommel. She attended the Mayfield School in Woodward County, Okla.
On Nov. 19, 1936, she married Ray Buttel in Woodward, Okla. Following their marriage, they lived in California for five years. In 1941, they moved to Newkirk, Okla. living there a short time before moving to a farm near Maple City, Kan. In 1951, they bought a farm near Peru, where she lived until 1994, when she moved to Caney. Mr. Buttel preceded her in death on Feb. 29, 1992.
Mrs. Buttel was a longtime member of the Assembly of God. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and sewing.
Survivors include one son, Keith Buttel, Caney, Kan., two daughters, Norma Herard, Independence, Kan. and Janice Powers, Louisburg, Kan., six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, in the Sedan Assembly of God with Rev. Paul Stetz officiating. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.
Arrangements were under the direction of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan.

C. Butterfield Rites at Caney
Clarence H. Butterfield of Stillwater, Okla., died Wednesday evening, Nov. 20, in the Stillwater hospital where he had been a patient for one week. Funeral services were held in the Graves Memorial Chapel in Caney on Saturday, Nov. 23. Rev. Robert Pierson, pastor of the Stillwater Methodist church, officiated, and interment was in Sunnyside cemetery at Caney. Masonic services were also conducted in the chapel by Caney Lodge No. 324, AF&AM, with Everett Short orator and Ted Simpson chaplain.
Butterfield was born Jan. 8, 1908, at Gravette , Ark., the son of John and Jane Fish Butterfield. The family moved to Sedan in 1914, and he was graduated from the Sedan High school. And electrician, he worked for the Inland Utilities Co., in Sedan and Continental Can Co. in Coffeyville. At the time of his death he was employed as an electrician at Oklahoma State University.
On May 4, 1935, he and Leota Harris were married at Sedan. They moved to Caney in 1942 and to Stillwater in 1962. He held memberships in the Methodist church, Caney Masonic Lodge, and Jewel Chapter No. 105, Order of the Eastern Star, of which he was a past patron.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Harry Graves of Caney; a son, John Butterfield of Tulsa; as sister, Mrs Clayo (Inez) Mattocks, and a brother, Jesse Butterfield, both of Sedan; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, his parents and one brother.
MRS. IVA D. BYBEE - Submitted by Cheryl King
Mrs. Iva D. Bybee, 85, of Hewins died Sunday, July 21 in Newton Memorial hospital where she had been for two months. Services were conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Hewins Church of Christ by Bro. George Blake of Winfield. Burial was in Ozro Falls cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bybee was born at Vermillion, Ill., Aug. 20, 1877. She came to Kansas with her parents and had lived around Hewins the greater part of her life. She and Dan Bybee were married in 1903. He died in 1956. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Fairy Lea Garrison of Howard and a son Samuel, of the home.

SPLINTER CAUSES DEATH
Winfield Boy’s Accident Followed by Convulsions Winfield, Kans., September 10
The 7-year-old son of Mr. & Mrs. M. P. Byers, who resided seven miles Southeast of Winfield, died Friday evening of lock-jaw. The case was unusual. Three weeks ago the boy ran a wood splinter into the side of his foot near the ankle. The skin was broken for an inch or so. The wound was dressed and it healed up nicely and nothing was thought of the incident until Friday evening, when he was taken with spasms, his jaw set, and he was unable to swallow. Physicians were summoned and an antitoxin was administered, but nothing could be done to save him. He went from one spasm into another and died in about four hours.

Chauncey Byrum, one of the old settlers of this county, passed away at his home northwest of town Wednesday night. He was about 74 years old and had been ill a long while. The funeral services were conducted at the home Thursday by Rev. E. L. Brown.
MRS LOMA JOHNSTON-BYRUM - Submitted by M. Byrum
Our community has again been saddened by the death of Mrs. Loma Johnston-Byrum. Mrs. Byrum has been in very poor health for some time. She was taken to St. Mary's hospital at Winfield a short time ago and it was thought she was improving, but on July 1 she passed away. Her mother, husband and sister were with her when death came. The remains were brought to Cedar Vale. Funeral services were conducted at the M. E. church. Interment was made in the Cedar Vale cemetery.
Coming to Chautauqua county with her parents in 1906 where she has continued to make her home until her death. She united with the M. E. church at Wauneta, Kansas, in 1916. Was united in marriage to James P. Byrum, July 2, 1922. To this union was born two children.
She leaves to mourn her loss the husband, James Byrum of Elgin, Kansas, one son, Jerald Authur, one daughter, Ellen Belle, her mother, Mrs. L. E. Pierce of Wauneta, Kansas, one brother Wm. Lloyd of Lawrence, Kansas, one sister Louise Belle Myers of Grenola, Kansas, her father Francis Marion Johnston having preceded her to the Great Beyond in 1915 and a host of other relatives and friends.
MRS. SARAH E. BYRUM - Submitted by M. Byrum
Sarah Ellen Byrum was born Sarah Ellen Cuzzort of Evansville, Indiana. The daughter of Mr. B. Cuzzort and Nancy Redman Cuzzort. On Oct. 5, 1863, at the age of 15, she moved with her parents to Arkansas where she was baptized into the Methodist Church in her girlhood. She was married to Alfred Cates when she was 21 years old. Two children were born to this union, both of whom preceded her in death. She was widowed by the death of her husband in 1889. On July 12, 1891 she was married to Chauncey A. Byrum in Arkansas. To this union seven children were born, three have preceded her in death.
She came to Kansas soon after their marriage and resided on the homestead of her husband from 1891 until 1952 when she and her son Lester came to Heyburn, Idaho and made their home on her daughter Frances' ranch where she departed this life Thursday, Nov. 21, 1957 at 2:15 a.m. Her age was 94 years, 1 month, 16 days. She had received a letter from the War Department stating that she was the last Civil War widow.
She leaves to mourn her loss, 2 daughters, Mrs. Frances Daken of Heyburn, Idaho, Mrs. Aesta Logsdon of Phoenix, Arizona; 2 sons, James Paul Byrum of Kennewick, Wash., and Lester at home; a step-daughter, Lydia Sears of Colville, Wash.; five great granddaughters, 2 grandsons, 28 great great grandchildren, 3 great great great grandchildren. One sister Mrs. Jane Smith of Hardy, Arkansas and a host of friends.
Internment was in the Paul, Idaho Cemetery after the funeral services held on Nov. 26 at Burley, Rev. Liman Shaw of Rupert conducted the services.

MRS. SUSIE FLO BYRUM
PASCO, Wash. - A lovelier heart was never known, Susie Flo Byrum, 92 years of age, passed away in her sleep Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, just after midnight. Flo was born to Arthur and Lydia (Fagg) Stewart, Dec. 27, 1911, near Hewins, Kan. She was a longtime resident of Pasco, Wash., but never forgot her Kansas roots. Flo will always be remembered for her flashing black eyes, sharp wit, incredibly generous love, and her uncanny ability to make everything seem better with one of her amazing pies.
Flo blessed our lives with a loving spirit, faithful prayers, and a passion for all that is good. She was a talented seamstress, known for beautifully handcrafted garments, and a skilled dry cleaner.
Flo is survived by her devoted daughter, Betty Lou (Byrum Berry) Abbott; son-in-law, Raymond; forever son, Fred L. Berry; granddaughters, Kris (Berry) Ansotigue, Patti (Beny) Lingle, Tommi (Berry) Nordlund, and Paula (Berry) Rosencrans; 8 great-grandchildren; 15 step grandchildren; 32 step great grandchildren; 45 step great great grandchildren, She also is survived by loving nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at her church home on Monday, Oct. 4,2004. at 1 p.m. at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Pasco. A graveside service followed at 2:30 p.m. at Desert Lawn Memorial Park.
