She was a member of the Sedan Rebekah Lodge No. 33, which she enjoyed attending and was very faithful to every duty. However, on account of failing health she was permitted to attend only two meetings in the last 16 months.
She was a very faithful Christian, having been baptized into the Christian church in Sedan in the year 1901 by Rev. John W. Bays. She was a charter member of the Friendship club of this church, but her outstanding Christian work was done in the Sunday school. She was the teacher of a young ladies class for the past six years which she promoted with her whole soul. She spared no effort for this class, alwaya keeping in close touch with every member. It pleased her greatly when any member of her class accepted Christ and she was especially solicitious for every member until they had made this wise decision. She attended church until one month before her death.
She was also very devoted to her home and assumed the responsibility of its management after the passing of her father. Her mother and sister looked to her as the guide in the home. Any one who lives such a life of service feels prepared to die as she often stated. Yet she regretted to leave just now, as she enjoyed living. But she stated in her last days that she had always tried to do her best, was anxious to do good and felt that her efforts seemed to be rewarded as so many manifstations of friendship were extended to her durng her illness. She exhibited the most remarkable courage and cheerfulness during. her painful illness.
SILENCE. There is a silence that men call death, When a star drops from the firmament and is gone, He knows not where, and a man is vaguely troubled, By loss he cannot help, but with the Dawn, Cometh the silence that men call Peace, When the tumult of his heart hath become quiet, There comes a gladness to his soul at last, For somehow God hath made his love like that. There is a silence that men call Hope, Which springs anew and seeks some distant goal, It is infinite and holy and man hears, God’s ageless hope to man, “He restoreth my soul.”
Funeral Services Held Sunday for Pioneer Resident.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church Sunday afternoon at 8 o'clock for Mrs. Orlena Alford, well known pioneer resident of Sedan and Chautauqua county, The services were conducted by Rev. Edwin G. Michael, pastor of the church. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery with the Buckles Funeral Home undertakers in charge.
Orlena Harris, daughter of Nicholas and Helen Harris was born Sept. 6, 1862 in Alfordsville, Indiana. She was the only child of the family and was reared an orphan by her grand parents since her mother died when she was 2 years old and her father when she was 6 years old. She departed this life July 23, 1932, in her home at Sedan, Kansas, at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 17 days.
The deceased united with the Christian church at Alfordsvllle, Indiana, at the age of 14 years under the preaching of Rev. James G. Blankenship. With her husband she transferred her membership to the Christian church of Peru, Kansas, where it remained until her death.
On April 20, 1871. she was united in marriage to Willie H. Alford by an uncle, Wayne Alford, who was a Christian minister. To this union seven children were born: Thomas, Agnes, Isaac, Wynton, John, Nellie and Helen Agnes and John died in infancy and Nellie passed away from this life a little over a year ago.
This family moved to Chautauqua County, Kansas, onto the homestead east of Sedan that Mr. Alford had taken two years before, returning to Indiana for his bride. Mrs. Alford lived on this homestead continuously until 1910, except for seven months spent in Kentucky. Since her sons had left home and her husband had passed in 1906, she moved to Sedan in 1910 with her two daughters, Nellie and Helen.
She leaves to mourn her passing, four children: Thomas, Sedan, Isaac, Peru; Wynton of Sedan, and Helen of Sedan, Also thirteen grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren many cousins and distant relatives, besides a host of friends.
As long as Mrs. Alford was physically able she was very loyal to the church. In the early days she spent a great deal of time in promoting the small Sunday schools. She loved the old hymns, the ones sung at her funeral being some of her favorites. The ministers in the early days and even to the last found her home a place of welcome and hospitality.
The deceased was very devoted to her home and had a strong love for her children, this perhaps helped to make it possible to always be able to live in her own home all her life. She failed very fast after the death of her daughter, Nellie. Because of her love for her home she spent most of her time there the last twenty years. She would have liked to live two months longer so as to have reached the age of 80 years, but was reconciled to go as her interest seemed to be chiefly in the next world. Here she anticipated having her strength renewed for she, loved to be busy.
Miss Jessie Alford, granddaughter of the deceased, dedicated the following poem to her grandmother.
PIONEER MOTHER
Those hands which drove an ox team are quiet now,
Worn and blue-veined they rest from life, slow toil,
The quaint old-fashioned phrase, of those lips,
Have slowly stilled, as rivers murmurs cease,
When they at last reach their life's goal, the sea.
Those eyes which gazed on endless western plains,
Have closed from every weariness of sight;
No more will light the way for pioneers.
When one has lived his life and had his dreams and then
Has turned to visions in life's twilight dim,
For age looks backward in the misty gloom,
Not following the beckoning hand of youth,
Why then it's not so sad to leave the world,
Where one has toiled and loved failed and won,
It's in hope of meeting those that have gone, amen.
